Let's Sperg Etrian Odyssey Untold (Classic) -

So, I've been reading through a lot of old forum text-based Lets Plays recently, and I've been on a massive Etrian Odyssey kick lately. So, taking inspiration from those old Neoseeker and Something Awful lets plays, as well as our own culture of playing Pokemon fan games, I'm gonna start up a playthrough of Etrian Odyssey Untold with you guys. Etrian Odyssey is a classic grid-based dungeon crawler where you assemble a guild of adventurers, mapping out your progress on the DS bottom screen, and discovering the mysteries that lie at the bottom (or top) of the Yggdrasil Labyrinth. These games are regarded as incredibly difficult, but its that difficulty that makes adventuring dangerous, that makes your decisions matter, and that makes victory taste all the sweeter; a very far cry from most popular JRPGs today like Pokemon and Persona. Its a game thats' going to kick in my teeth a fuck load, and I hope to share that adventure with all of you.

With that, lets get the basics out of the way.

EO Opening.PNG

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jievx5zfQps

The title screen for our adventure. As I stated in the blurb at the beginning, our adventure is set in the Yggdrasil Labyrinth, and the title screen is a beautiful woodland, with "Spinning the Tale" backing up the visual. If you let this screen hang though, it gives you an anime-ass opening that actually spoils some shit pretty heavily; wouldn't advise watching it. Etrian Odyssey Untold iss a remake of the first Etrian Odyssey for the original Nintendo DS, but with an added, incredibly unnecessary story mode.

EO 2.PNG

We're gonna leave Story mode in the trash and go with the real OG mode, Classic. Unfortunately, there are gonna be a couple negative repercussions that are going to come from not having completed Story Mode, but we'll get to them.

EO 3.PNG

Expert is the only way to play, with all the games in the series being deliberately balanced around it. Standard mode is about on par with Persona's higher difficulties with death still being a real threat, but generally you deal a lot more damage, take significantly less, and you get a retry when you die. Picnic is games journalist mode. The older games in the series (EO1-EO3) had no difficulty settings, like god intended. I can understand why they'd add in these difficulties, but you aren't playing Etrian Odyssey unless you play on Expert. However, for the sake of grinding, I will be utilizing Picnic mode for off screen grinding, everything else will be Expert.

EO 4.PNG

The Radha, governors of Etria, issued a proclamation throughout the continent...

Any able-bodied adventurer was invited to investigate the forest and explore its depths.

But no matter how many came to investigate the dungeon, none gained the renown they sought.

As more adventurers tried and failed to conquer it, it came to be known by a new name...

The Yggdrasil Labyrinth.

You are the latest adventurers to journey to Etria in response to the Radha's proclamation.

You have but one goal: explore the forest to win fame and fortune. Etria is at hand...

Nothing else to do but head on into the Explorers Guild and get ourselves established.

EO 6.PNG

Guildmaster.PNG

"Since you're new here, I'd like to set you up with a veteran group... but not many guilds are recruiting. *sign* Shortsighted treasure hunters care too much about petty trifles to do any real investigation. In any case, if you got the guys, you could make a guild entirely made up of newcomers. There are loads of people just sitting around twiddling their thumbs, eager to join any guild that would take 'em."

"So, you're going to make a guild?"

Yes.

"Great, lets get started. Write down what you would like your guild to be named here in this ledger." This name may someday be known throughout the world, so think carefully before committing to it."

Lets skip this part for the time being.

"[BLANK], huh. Not a bad name. Now that you've got a guild, try getting some adventurers to fill your ranks. If you're bold enough to explore the Labyrinth yourself, you can register your own name as a member. Having more adventurers gives you more options, and less of a chance of dying down there. Give it some thought, and make sure you can recruit a variety of classes into your guild. Let's see... I guess five members is a good number. That's not too many, and not too few."

EO 7.PNG

This is the explorer's guild menu. We can add up to 25 members to our little crew, adjust parties and positions, reset skill points, and eventually reset our character and add bonus stats depending on their level; those latter two options will come when they come though. For now, lets rifle through our class selection.

EO8.PNG

The stock standard swordsman, good for smacking shit around with swords for accuracy and axes for inaccurate unga bunga. They have solid STR (Strength), good VIT (HP and Defense), and a few supportish skills in their kits, but horrendous TEC (Magic and Magic Defense)

EO9.PNG
Survivalists are bow-wielding supporters with some damage alongside it. In the original games they had a lot more ranged damage, but that's been shifted in the remake. Survivalists contribute a decent bit to the party offensively while making navigation through the labyrinth more manageable, plus they utterly shit on Medic's healing abilities lol

EO10.PNG

The tank class of the game, and probably the most important one to have in your party at all times. Later on in the Let's Play I'm going to be asking for party compositions to take on bosses with, but Protectors are never, ever going to leave my squad because they're THAT vital. Their skills cut physical damage by large percentages to a row, and completely negate dangerous elemental damage later on.

EO11.PNG

Our resident kinky damage dealers and disablers. These guys tie up the enemy and inflict debuffs (with fun names like Shackles/Cuffs/Gag,) and capitalize on them by dishing our some really serious damage (Ecstacy/Viper/Climax). They don't have especially high chances of getting those debuffs off (heh) but they have a fair enough shot at it, especially with a Hexer to help out.

EO12.PNG

Medics are a class that excel in healing, status restoration, and not much else. They are absolute dogshit at attacking, but they do have some interesting use far later on in the game where you can pull death-defying shenanigans with a Protector. He has his uses and he's far from unviable, but there's better out there.

EO13.PNG

The black mage of our Etrian entourage. They're very, very fragile, but pump out devastating single target and AoE elemental damage with their cool-ass alchemy gloves. These guys are seriously fantastic outside of the frailty.

EO14.PNG

Lute-toting singers that specialize in buffing allies, specifically their offense and defense. They're pretty simple and don't go much beyond that, but they're still rather useful.

EO15.PNG

In the original games, this class and Hexer were actually locked until you cleared the 4th Stratum. These guys belong in the front row where they'll be taking lots of damage, but the tradeoff is that they're the premier physical damage class. Only thing I can really call a negative is that one of their skill trees are superior in every way to their other two trees, so they don't have much variety.

EO16.PNG

The last class we'll be considering, and the companion class to Ronin in that originally it was locked until after the 4th stratum. These guys are all about disables and debuffs, and landing those debuffs and disables are gonna make our lives much easier. Not landing them hurts, but its generally worth it having these guys around.

Hero.png
Frederica.png

There are two classes that require playing through the story mode to unlock, that being Highlander and Gunner. These two classes are pretty overpowered, with the Highlander dealing serious damage and buffing everyone else at the cost of a little HP, and Gunner having elemental skills, binds, and one of the most hilariously powerful buffs in the entire series in Double Action. Partially because they're both incredibly strong, and partially because I can't be arsed enough to complete story mode, we won't be using them.

As is Etrian Odyssey let's play tradition, I'm gonna leave you guys to claim a class and character portrait for me to name after you or whatever you'd like me to name them, as well as asking for potential guild names that I'll choose the best from. I'll need a member of each of the classes above and they'll all see some kind of use, so reserve yours quick! I'm also going to be doing the thing EO playthroughs like doing and giving characterization and dialogue to the characters, so if you want me to portray your character a certain way, make sure to include that too. The core of Etrian Odyssey is forging your own narratives with the scant story and the environments inside the labyrinth, and I'm incredibly excited to bring this journey to all of you. This is gonna be a fun project.

Since you are using a protector no matter what, i think that by recent events, the chunky boy should be named Dream, and as for the portrait, i think the first one fits him well.

There are very few games I sperg about, but EO is one of them.
I started with 2, which is considered the hardest in the series, and I remember getting my ass kicked by 2 fucking moles in the first 15 minutes.
Anyhow, I'll take the Hexer and the second portrait, I always use that one during my playthroughs.

Since you are using a protector no matter what,
pussy, real men play without healer or tank, and cheese it with ailments/binds.

I love EO. I played 4 and 5. The most fun I had was replaying the game with really unbalanced team. In 4 I had a double bushi. In 5 I made 2 supremacist run where ou can only have one race. So you have a really lopsided team and have to build arround it. I did celestian and therian.

You should have a Ronin with the first portrait called :Nothing Personal Kid or NPK-Sempai for short

People on Something Awful sperged a lot about the let's-kill-the-forest-folk-AKA-the-fantasy-counterpart-Ainu-people part of this game. From what I gather, it's like if China made a game where one part had you killing the last of the fantasy counterpart Uighurs. Then again, that SA LP was of Story mode, which tries to make the heroes look like the good guys amidst all of this but ends up falling really flat. No wonder we're throwing Story mode in the trash. Any idea how you might tackle this section, or are you going to save that for when you get to it?

Let's go with Dark Hunter, portrait 4, call her Firetruck or FT for short.

I love me some EO dude, I'm real hype to be doing this here for y'all. Only EO's I haven't played are 4 and Nexus despite adoring the music in both of those games. I'd personally consider 3 to be the hardest unless you go hard on Charge spam or abuse Scylla and Elder Dragon with instakill memes for EXP, and even then the true final boss will annihilate ya. I'm sure I'll get shanked by some moles early on here too, they're pretty brutal for any new party. But yeah, for my own sanity, I just want the consistency that Protector provides; I'll still be getting my throat ripped out by blindsides I'm sure.

In the original game, you pretty much did initiate genocide on the forest folk, but they weren't all wiped out because one of their species shows up in EO3 when you go to fight the lightning dragon post-game. EOU in story mode gives you more leeway with the justification, with Kupala saying that her people are 'infected' in some way, maybe with bloodlust or some kinda frenzy disease? You're still killing plant people, but it gives enough of a self defense angle that most will ignore the implications. Doesn't help that the story party makes her into their maid.

Landsknecht, Survivalist, Medic, and Troubabour are still up for grabs.

Is there any difference between Classic mode in Untold and the original games?

Enjoy the game, OP. Been a while since I played an EO game myself but now I might have to go play U again.

Just don't pick the pink haired loli troubadour, dunno about you guys but as time went on my feelings on the artist drawing loli hentai changed and it skeeves me out now.

Landsknecht, Survivalist, Medic, and Troubabour are still up for grabs.

Landsknecht portrait 2 with the name Budgie? Axe build if you haven't tried it before.

Classic mode is minimal story and no forced character roster, story mode has both those, has two unique character classes (that aren't very balanced for EOI) it also has another smaller dungeon to explore called Gladsheim that has unique enemies and bosses but you aren't missing too much if you don't play it honestly.

Yeah, I've played the original EO1 and the story mode in EOU, but not EOU classic. Was just wondering if this is really a "third version" as it were, or pretty much a direct port of EO1 with QOL improvements.

A few of the broken skills from the original have been fixed, but the real issue is that you wind up having slightly rougher difficult spikes whenever you reach a new stratum because they balanced the game around your party getting some extra levels from Gladsheim, which is story exclusive. There's also grimoires, which I'll get into later.

Just survivalist is left, someone claim it before its gone!

I never managed to get into Etrian Oddysey, it's either the game forcing you to party in story mode or me just sucking in those particular games (probably the latter). Still best of luck in the LP.

With everyone having chosen their class and names, we can start this thing off. Lets see our characters and guild.
Dream.PNG

Dream, our Protector. He's a chunky boy who loves being in the spotlight, and he's come to the labyrinth to make a name for himself. He has an intense need to be the center of attention, and has delusions of being the most suave, charming man in Etria.

Takodachi.PNG

Takodachi, the Hexer. Carries herself pridefully and has a high opinion of herself, and anyone she deigns to cast a hex for should crawl in the mud like the goddess she is. Caught off guard if anyone references how flat she is. Wants to explore the labyrinth to become a respected researcher to work her way into a cushy high-end Midgard Library job without having to be an intern for those stuffy scholarly autocrats.

NPKSempai.PNG

Nuthin' personnel, kiddo. The edgiest man in town, while his friend were learning useless things such as how to read, do basic math, and social skills, he studied the blade. While they got girlfriends and jobs, he studied the blade. While they were having kids and being productive citizens of Etria, he studied the blade. Now as a 46 year old hotheaded geezer with too many cheap katanas in his cousin's closet he lives in, he's heading into that godsdamned labyrinth to show those fools the superiority of the katana.[/SPOILER]

Firetruck.PNG

Firetruck, to be frank, doesn't have a concept of what sex appeal is. She was picked up the next town over to be a dominatrix thinking that she was training to become a ringmaster is a circus, her childhood dream. She was promptly fired for whipping her first 'doggie', a lecherous old man who thought he could get something more than the usual masochist routine from this fresh new hire, within an inch of his life for bad behavior. After that debacle, she found a particularly decorated and persuasive flyer advertising explorers and adventurers to come to Etria to delve into the Yggdrasil Labyrinth. Under the impression that this was some sort of grand circus, she took off to join in the event. She's quite dim, but she really means well.

Aquinas.PNG

Aquinas is a bit antisocial, but he's a pretty neat dude. He's a local celebrity around the general region for mixing up solutions and mixtures for people who need way to curb pests or perform experiments. An avid person-watcher, he loves making fun of them for his own amusement. Mainly wants to go into the labyrinth because he is incredibly bored with his day to day of laughing at retards, and wants a challenge.

Antarctic.PNG

Antarctic hails from the far Western continent, having grown up in a place as snowy as a witch's tit. He worked as a nurse and lived a pretty mundane life. His hobby of birdwatching made him yearn to be free and to live a more exciting life, and he eventually pulled the trigger, getting himself on board a ship heading across the ocean. Upon walking on dry land again, he found a flyer for the Yggdrasil Labyrinth and thinking that this was the exact kind of adventurer he craved, headed off to Etria. He's a bit of a carefree guy, and his new philosophy of going wherever the wind blows means he takes things in stride. Above all, a kind and caring lad.

Budgie.PNG

A fiery free spirit who likes to associate herself with the royal knights of the Radha. She's been inside the labyrinth before as a hired scout for logging and foraging operations as far as the second floor, but never got into any scraps. As time went on, she got more curious about what was in the labyrinth, and found herself with an overwhelming desire to beat the absolute shit out of some of these monsters the more she heard stories about good men and women getting mauled by them, or coming across the remains of decimated parties on her resource expeditions. She got her guard buddies in the Radha to give her some basic combat lessons with some style alterations to accommodate her preference for her axe, and set off the adventure she's been dreaming of.

Edea.PNG

Edea is as sweet a girl as they come, always wanting to help others and and lift their spirits. Already having been around the continent performing for crowds of hundreds, she's laying low from her fans and wants to see what kind of sights are waiting below the continent.

Tealeaf.PNG

The last Autismo, Tealeaf. Money-hungry to an extreme, her whole reason for going into that stupid labyrinth is to loot it for all its worth and come out filthy rich. In any situation that doesn't involve an ental to me made, however, shes a pretty nice woman who enjoys archery as a sport, having come out first in several shooting competitions.

Autismos.PNG

Our guild name, seeing as nobody offered up a guild name. Surprisingly fitting for the Kiwi Farms EO playthrough, though.

Next update, we'll take a look at the town, gear up a bit, make a party, and head into the first stratum.

I don't know exactly what the designers had in mind making "Tweed" the starting armor in most EO games, but I always imagine tweed jackets with leather elbow patches
