Russian developer Wireless Lab launches an update to their popular mobile digital photo editor FaceApp. The app is well known for allowing users to force photos into smiles, look older and younger and even allowing you to look like the opposite sex. This update adds the ability to transform your photos into different ethnic versions of yourself, like African, Asian, Caucasian and Indian. The app users neural networks to create realistic looking images.

Jesus H. Christ "digital blackface" would be like some shoop da whoop shit you could make in MS Paint not a program that meticulously altars a person's face to have ethnic features.

In any case, the people I worked with would always use the monkey face MSQRD or Snapchat filter if they wanted to get their racist jollies. You're not solving anything by getting rid of this. Nice try though, bleed hearts.

Blackface is meant to be exaggerated and offensive by adding literally black makeup and thick red lips that look inhuman. This app sounds like it uses a bunch of algorithms that searches other people's pictures and merges them together to make a realistic looking face.

So, what are these people trying to say? Pictures of black faces are offensive?

That may be impossible since it relies on data from their servers. But they have just soft disabled it in much the same way we soft delete posts, so an older version might get around it. A cursory google doesn't reveal a 'working' version though.

It's a shame that these twitter philistines can't appreciate the actual brilliance of a program like this. I mean like holy shit how's it even doing that? How's it doing the shadowing when it changes feature size? How did it fill in the background details in that Chris photo when it reimagined him as non-transtrender? For that matter, how is it even detecting and quantifying facial structure so as to even allow the process to take place at all?

I hope the faceapp people are proud of what they've done. It's hella cool, and it's going to piss off a whole bunch more people.
