I've said this before and I'll say this again, someone needs to tell Chris about supply and demand and very basic economics. He could do a sale now, he'll make less money initially but he'll be churning out more volume which means he ultimately makes more money. That's why Walmart is one of the biggest retailers on the planet - Sam Walton realized that selling stuff at a lower price than your competitors means that while you're not making a lot of profit per unit, you're generating more volume and more total profit.

It looks like Chris is focusing on selling medallions, and while there's probably a higher demand for that, they probably cost more to make and they're probably more expensive to ship. As I've said, he really should be going for the commissions - his costs could be low, even if he buys suitable grade materials like actual sketch paper and whatnot, plus it's really cheap to send a sketch. He'd be making a shitload of profit off those and could make his money. If he offered a sale where he was charging like, $20 a commission, he can get people who wouldn't buy a commission to buy one or maybe buy several.

It's a bit counterintuitive but it's sound economics and that's how a lot of retailers operate.

That's ignoring the whole fact Chris is awful at managing money.

Have none of his friends asked him why he owes eBay money yet?
Why should they? He sold stuff on eBay, forgot/didn't care about the fees and spend all his money. Now eBay kindly reminds him of the fees and he tries to solve this by doing commissions and medallions.

Also, for some reason his first few lines made me kinda smirk. I mean, he forgot about a holiday and thus his hard work was in vain, but the "Who's dumb: Me right now" kinda makes his little mistake likeable.

Also @champthom:
He did try sales before, so I guess the idea isn't that alien to him. But I concur, he could be drumming up sales now. Like offering 10 Special Edition Medallions with some gimmick. Like his old original medallion he could add those small trinkets that depict other characters. I could see such medallions easily be sold for 40 bucks.

Every time I see these things all I can think of is this one explanation of Charlie Sheen's finances - for normal people, their flow of money is like a steady stream into a cup with a small hole in the bottom, and Sheen's cup has several holes punched violently in the bottom, so money just flows through.

With Chris, it's like he sawed out the entire bottom of the cup, and the money flows through without even touching the sides.

That would only work if he can sell them for higher than what it costs to make them. Considering how he doesn't take shipping costs and other materials (and ebay fees) into account he could very well be in the red instead if he tried doing that. I think it's good on principle, though I'M not sure Chris can pull it off. Not to mention the fact that he won't do it because he is greedy.

Actually I imagine it to be a highly sophisticated transformation machine that turns money into legos instantly.

Joking aside, I would really like to know how much money he gives Barb and how that is used. Paying his credit card minimums aside, I wonder what he actually uses and in what way... I mean it's the first money Chris ever earned (aside his little jobs at Wendy's and Cutco) and it's most likely going into some makeshift repairs of Barbs hoard-lair.

Yes. It looks like Chris is breaking the cardinal rule of speculating. "Never fall in love with the stock."

I have to think that the medallions hold a special place in his heart. So much so that he can't see that as you said, on a profit per unit basis he'd be better served by commissions or other high profit products. What's the cost of production, packaging and shipping for a medallion vs a drawing?

I hate to chalk it up to the 'tism, but that may be what is happening here. Or just Chris doing what Chris does in his typical unexamined Chris way.

In other news, he needs $200 in two days? This is going to be an interesting 48 hours!

I guess so, but at a certain point, no matter how much they cost, there will be no more fans of Chris left to buy them. I suppose there's still a market left--there are 3000+ members of this forum, and even if we exclude the Jace fans and those who are dead set against giving Chris money, there are probably a significant number of human beings in the world who still might be tempted to buy something. But if he had thought to do this in 2009, he'd be making a lot more money. Chris is an old meme now. He really has no way of expanding his fandase beyond where it stands now, since he has no idea how he became famous in the first place.

Are people really helping Chris if they bail him out again?

Let's say Chris makes the $200 he needs in sales. He again spends all of his proceeds, failing to set aside enough for ebay, shipping and PayPal fees, and next month we get another desperate begging post. The cycle repeats.

Is it better that he suffers the consequences of his poor planning if it breaks the cycle? Could he eventually learn from this?

He's making the minimum payment, which implies he owe eBay a lot more than $300.

I'm pretty sure there's no 'minimum payment' with eBay - whatever you owe is due in one lump, you either pay it or you don't. That's the way it's always worked with me, at least. You can make payments of whatever amount you like, but if you pay 299.99 and your fees are 300, then it's the same as if you hadn't paid a penny as far as eBay are concerned.

Also, he may have a couple of days before it's due, but they quite possibly won't suspend his account for a while - they can suspend the moment payment is overdue, but more often than not, they'll wait until the end of the next month to take action. Of course, then he'll have two months of fees to pay, including the fees from his recent medallion sales, and that might be interesting.
