Fanfiction tropes you hate -

Disc

A Dubious Disc indeed.

EDIT: It just hit me, where would "erection" even be considered on the sexy tier list? Been seeing that pop up a lot more, actually.
Puns intended.
it'd be in tier 3 - Clinical and Formal, but you wouldn't find it a good fit.

Regarding the main topic, I'd have to go with when people skip the appropriate buildup so they can get straight to the AAAANGST.

People who think FanFiction is serious business. It isn't. It's a fun hobby, I used to do it myself, but it's nothing to get upset or angry about.

I think authors should be allowed to do pretty much whatever they want with characters and story lines, but at some point they alter it so much and change so many of the core aspects of the original work I really do wonder why they even based their story in that universe? Like, why are you writing a story about a non-magical Harry Potter dealing with an HIV diagnosis because he took too many speedballs at the orgy? You clearly have no interest in the universe and you've taken the character so far away from who they originally were that they may as well be a different person. This is just an original story with some character names that coincide with another work.
That said, I do also kind of like when some authors take characters from one universe and put them in vastly different situations just to see how they'd manage. Can be fun. Can be very dumb.

ANGST! For the love of God, tone it down. Not everything is a bleak wasteland of despair. I understand a lot of these writers are teenage girls and so angst is kind of a go-to emotion a lot of the time (Fuck me, I know this feel), but seriously, cheer the fuck up. This is especially bad in stories were one character gets gay-flipped and suddenly all their friends abandon them because HOMOPHOBIA.

EDIT: Since it's brought up so much, here's a a video I saw on the whole Omegaverse shit.
I'm not a huge fan of the Dom and there's a few things I disagree with in the video, but he touches on a lot of the weirder stuff in this "community" which is fairly interesting if you haven't been exposed to it before.

I hate it when people add random weed crap into universes where it wouldn’t exist (such as Harry Potter or Star Wars). By weeb crap, I mean this:
  • Katanas
  • Japanese words/phrases
  • Ninjas
  • Sushi (can fit in certain circumstances)
  • Martial arts (can be incorporated well, but high chance of failure)
  • Kimonos
Some of these things can work, but if you’re trying to be in-universe, it takes away the magic of that place. Some exceptions though are including eastern philosophy (sparingly) and alluding to real-world things. If you say it outright, it sounds ridiculous.

Actually having katanas in Star Wars sounds awesome given the inspiration, Seven Samurai. But it needs to be put in by a writer who knows what the fuck they're doing.

The reason why I put it in the list was because of what you said. In the hands of a competent writer, it would be awesome, but I’ve seen too many cases of this stuff randomly being forced into fanfics.

weed crap
I was so confused for a minute :p but I agree, weeb crap is often in stories written by the wrong people. It's too powerful for them to wield.

Okay, a trope I hate in fanfiction is when the female protagonist has a male name with an odd spelling. I don't mind if it's an unusual female name though as long as the rest of the story is good

Not a fanfiction trope I hate, but I do get sick of people who exclusively do fan works. I think you should make something yourself. Even if it's a blatant rip-off of what you love, at least you made something yourself without piggybacking off the success of some known property. I like a good fanwork from time to time, but goddamn, it's all people want or do these days.

I mean, they sort of were a thing in Star Wars if you played the Knights of the Old Republic games. They were also coated so that they wouldn't be obliterated by lightsabers. Lightsabers were infinitely better, but it's not like you'd die immediately if you went up against one with them. It was essentially how they managed to have a type of melee weapon in a Star Wars RPG without Jedi and Sith Lords being so plentiful that they seemed trivial in their importance.

Fundamentally I don’t disagree with this sentiment, but it’s obvious why they do it. Nobody wants to read some third-rate writers’ shitty original story, if you actually want people to read your shit there needs to be a hook there, and being based of an existing work is a surefire way to at least garner some interest.

Anyway, thing I hate the most is when pretty decent non-porn writing is blended with very poorly written sex scenes that feel like they come out of a stereotypical bad porno. In those instances, the story would 100% be better if all the gross sex was replaced with “....and then they fucked, and it was good.”

This goes double for doujins. Nothing worse than reading a really well-illustrated doujin that’s funny and in character, and then the sex starts and you’re blasted in the face with every single gross hentai cliche and trope.

Man, fanfiction used to be my bread and butter as a cringy teen. Still is, but still. I wouldn't say I hate all of these tropes, some are more like a guilty pleasure-

-When the author has an obvious hateboner for one character because they may or may not get in the way of the author's OTP (Kikyo from Inuyasha and Jinny from Harry Potter comes to mind)
-Rape is treated like it's no big deal and is most often used as a way for the main characters to get together
-The rape victim falls in love with the rapist
-The abused main character falls in love with the abusive main character who slowly changes
-Those god awful euphemisms for sex, penis, and vagina. If you're going to write erotic, get dirty with it, say cock and pussy or something, anything is better than member, baby maker, sausage.
-Not sure if these are still being written, but MST style fanfctions riffing on other fanfiction.

I love/hate the cringe of it all. Still frown from embarrassment whenever I try reading something even a little outside of my very limited comfort zone. And I couldn't get over myself enough to actually read anything but outright badfics like my immortal in my teens.
Instant nopes are the omegaverse and mpreg, babyfics are usually not interesting. Also bizarre when OC's turn into the protagonists of their own stories.
Recently I've been noticing a lot of this-character-has-mental-disorder type tags, and I've just been put off when I've had to read extensive mention and treatment on ADD and autism in the middle of my goofy scifi timetravel fic.

Anything involving Mpreg, incest, hurt/abuse, or rape where the author doesn't warn the reader about it ahead of time in the description or author's notes. Once in a great while one comes across these, but thankfully they are rare.

Characterization or story that suddenly gets derailed so the author can use their OC and fic as a political soapbox. Often this seems to happen after the author has been away for a year or two, they come back 'enlightened' on a particular issue and by God, they let you know it.

OC characters that are somehow so much 'better' then canon characters at stuff, even if they are kids, or author inserts that been teleported into that universe and are 'foreigners.'

Tropes that I find annoying for a particular fandom:

Transformers- Mpreg, abuse/hurt, rape, 'sticky' fics. These seem to be rife in anything involving Starscream and Megatron.

TMNT- Turtlecest, hurt/abuse, and flipped gender Turtle. Mikey seems to get the brunt of most of these save for the flipped gender stuff, since it seems like they see 'fun-loving' and 'laidback' as 'abused poor widdle woobie.'

I've seen some cool reader insert shit that plays out as a "choose your own adventure" book, but in the other hand, you've got most reader inserts being just retarded romantic author inserts that make little to no sense. Hell, just make a self insert if you wanna jerk yourself off.

The overwhelming preference for male/male couples, to the point of not being able to find any hetero pairings for particular fandoms. It's been like that since fanfiction really took off in the 2000s, but the reasoning is a bit different now - back then it was "two guys kissing is hot!!!!" while nowadays it's "queer representation!!!!"

It's even worse when the omegaverse thing comes in - I can't fathom how hundreds of fujoshis think a swollen bulbous dog dick going into an asshole and impregnating another male is at all sexy. Even when for all intents and purposes the characters look human in all other aspects. Mpreg was bad enough, but inventing a whole universe around it is a whole new level of degeneracy.

Whatever happened to those author notes that would appear in the middle of a chapter? The only solid example I can think of is My Immortal but I remember it being prevalent during around 2008-2011.

Also, do people still use the terms lemon, lime, grapefruit? I don't see them as often as I used to, never on AO3. Rarely on fanfiction.net.

Tragically I think that terminology has faded away. I would have such feels if I saw it again <3

You can still find them in first-timers' fics because the author will want you to listen to a specific song for it, but they don't seem to realize FFN doesn't allow outside links. Wattpad I think is where you're more likely to find these.

I'll still sometimes see "lemon", but it's been overtaken by "smut" and "PWP".

I know some parts of Tumblr uses them as get-arounds for the porn ban, but not much in fanfiction anymore.

Seems like you'll see the occasional author's note - I've been super busy with school! Now it's summer and I'm bored so I'm gonna update like crazy now!" only to see like, one update then they disappear for good. Anytime an author says they are only writing or updating because they are bored it's almost a guarantee they'll never finish the story because once the comments dry up they are suddenly "uninspired" and move onto something else. Author's writing out of boredom is an indication they don't care about the story itself, just the quick boost they get from beginning a new project and getting comments from fans who haven't had any new stories to read for a while
