Fanfiction tropes you love - Because we're all trash for something

We've talked about which tropes we hate, now let's show some love to tropes we actually like!

I really enjoy camping stories, they are generally funny because disaster almost certainly awaits. I also really like any sort of "first time" story - first kiss, first telling someone they love them, first time having sex - all of those are good stuff.

I'll be honest, I like a lot of AU's, especially if they're really "out there" and aren't the overdone cliches of High School AU's or Coffee Shop AU's.

I like when a decent writer takes something from the original material that may not have been very explored and just runs with it. It can lead to some interesting results.

Hurt/Comfort where one person almost dies, and everyone else takes care of them/shows them they care.

Waking up next to someone and the other just picking out details while they sleep. It's so cute.

I like the tropes involving perverts like the Lovable Sex Maniac. I know anime seems to love doing this, but it's fun when fanfic writers take those perverted characters and make them do other things they couldn't in the source material.

I can enjoy Hidden Depths as well, as long as it feels natural both for the character and in-story (which is rare, of course). A lot of popular characters in fandoms tend to not have a lot of screentime, but there's something fascinating about them that could be explored. Even well-established characters could still have a surprise or two if the writer's creative about it. Think the most common way to do it is by showing the character in the comfort of their own home, or by throwing them into a situation that they haven't been in in canon and playing around with them that way. A lot of shipping fics do this, but sadly not a lot of them have the character(s) going through the growing pains.

Taking grimdark works and making things more hopeful and uplifting. The best example is If the Emperor Had a Text-to-Speech-Device.

I'm a sucker for world-building expansion fics and what ifs based on hypothetical scenarios that could have happened in the original media.

Such as a series where villains always win, what if one day heroes finally got a chance, and how would they go about it.

Crossovers where they're very well written and consistent.
