Shadow of the Tomb Raider review bombed because of 34% discount
Andy called Shadow of the Tomb Raider "one of Lara Croft's best modern adventures" in his review last month and, up until this week, fans seemed to generally agree, giving it mostly positive reviews on Steam. But then it was review bombed, with most disgruntled fans citing a 34% week-long sale, which ends tomorrow, as the reason for criticism.

From reading some of the 600+ reviews since the sale went live (66% of those reviews are negative), the main line of reasoning is that it's unfair to have paid full price for the game, either as a pre-order or at launch, only to see it heavily discounted so soon after.

Most don't seem concerned about whether the game is any good or not, and many don't even comment on it. "Feel like a fool to have pre-ordered," one simply says. Another negative review reads: "Game is good btw...but never pre-ordering a Square Enix game ever again."

While I can understand the frustration, I wouldn't have it any other way—the fact that games go on sale so quickly, and regularly, is one of the things I like best about PC gaming. It's yet another reason why you should be cautious about pre-ordering anything.

There is, of course, some legitimate criticism to be found in the reviews, with some pointing to audio and visual bugs, while others simply didn't get on with the story or combat. But, on balance, I still think it's worth playing, and if you're quick you can grab it with that 34% discount. It's $39.59/£29.69 on Steam.

TL DR : The new Tomb Raider game got a 34% discount on steam, a mere month after it's release. People who preordered got buttwet about it... Were they justified, or lol thats what you get for preordering

Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of War...

If this is gonna be the new subtitle of choice like "Revelations" or "Origins" I want my fucking cut.

Also, anyone that buys a AAA game on launch (i.e. unfinished, with missing content, at full price) is a lolcow.

That’s kind of bad business practice.

I won’t get into the ethics of it, let the buyer beware, but this is a disincentive for customers going forward to preorder. Even more than there already is such a disincentive with just being patient for a year and getting DLCs and the whole game for maybe 25% of original value combined, praise Lord Gaben.

My guess is they will have to make preorder bonuses and unlocks pretty enticing to shore up this blow to consumer confidence.

Yea, Square enix is one of the worst publishers to pre-order from. They offer hardly any incentives in the way of either a discount nor offer much in the way of bonuses (amazon gave away a digital strategy guide and steam gave away a wallpaper for this game's preorder bonus). Square seems to love to do early discounts on PC. It's not uncommon for a $60 release to be discounted down to $15 by the end of the year by them. That said... 34% off a mere month after release, is really pushing it. I'm sure it's a short term strategy to try to get streamers and LPers to start playing the game on twitch, hoping more people realize it exists, and hopefully driving up sales.

You pay a premium to get a game on release day (with the exception of some games that have slight discounts on launch as a marketing strategy). They essentially paid additional money to not have to wait a month to play it.

Sometimes that's worth it, sometimes it's preferable to put a game on your wishlist and pick it up when it goes on sale.

There are plenty of legitimate criticisms to make towards AAA video game companies about various common practices in the industry, but this is just a bunch of butthurt dipshits. Other people getting the game cheaper later shouldn't have any impact on what value they put on a purchase.

Practically speaking it's also a dumb reason to give a negative review because for people who haven't bought it yet "it's a good game but THEY PUT IT ON SALE WAHH Thumbs down" is actually a reason to buy it rather than not to.

How many fucking times to people have to get ripped off by presale and release day hype before people realize it's just trying to cash in on a game that isn't finished yet because of unrealistic deadlines and promises?

If you preorder a AAA studio game with a quarter of it's budget sunk in hype and adverts, or even buy it during the initial release week, you should absolutely expect to feel like you've been ripped off.

Fuck sake... No Man's Sky should have taught this entire generation of millennial moron gamers two things:

1) Never fall for ANY studio's hype or previews
2) Never trust anyone with a Nu-Male smile

Any time idiots preorder, they should get a tube of anal cream for their preemptive butthurt when it goes on sale later.

Kill yourself, idiots.

I learned it three years earlier thanks to Total War: Rome II. :(

Thankfully, my life is too busy and I'm too old to obsess over game titles to get them on release date ever. Not to mention I could give two shits about online play with randos.

I've watched these last 10 years of game studios get worse and worse about selling a product short, gating the final content after DLC payments or patches 2-6 months after release.

I really don't give a shit that I'm always behind the curve on game titles. I'm also behind the curve of getting ripped off and everyone else pays to be beta testers for me by the time I decide to actually pick a title up.

As @AnOminous said, if you preorder or get it on release day, you deserve the butthurt and I'd add that you probably think mumble rap is the shit.

If you're paying 60 dollars for a game, you shouldn't complain that it's on sale. You paid 60 dollars so you could be the first to play it, if a game's any good why should it matter when it gets a price cut?

I'm madder about games staying $60 for years post launch (Looking at you, Activision and Nintendo).

The people who complain about this are crying bitches who paid extra to get bragging rights, but then begrudge the company making their back end profits after they've amortized the costs of producing the game and want to get those people who were willing to pay $40 or $30 but not $60 to be a fucking hipster.

Games that are primarily single-player tend to plummet in price, the time until they plummet will probably just keep getting faster and faster with how crowded the market is getting until the $60 price point becomes unsustainable and AAA game budgets get reined in a bit. Accept you're paying extra to play it quickly or wait around 2 months and get it on sale.

C) They are both idiots, I only pre-ordered in the past when the game was sure to be only commanded in small number by my LGS
