But then again, I wear a white dress shirts to work fairly regularly, albeit under a sweater in autumn and winter.

Depends on where you live. If you live in a place like Arizona, the seasons don’t change that much, so I don’t think people care as much. If you’re in a colder area where you’re expected to wear more sweaters/jackets, it makes sense, but that’s just my opinion.
