"Fast and Furious" was a 2009-2011 program by the Obama administration to quote "sell guns to cartels as to track them", leading to the accidental loss of thousands of high end guns and lives into cartel hands. This plan originates from the Bush administration when they had Project Gunrunner in 2005 in Texas and later expanded it nationwide in 2006. Later this evolved into the Bush Administration's "Wide Receiver" in Arizona, which served as the basis for the much more expansive "Fast and Furious" program. Specifically the incidents leading to the downfall and exaltation occurred during 2009-2011 when deaths started pilling up and US border patrol was meeting stiff resistance. This led to loss of at least one US border agent, an ICE Agent, people in the Mexican army and Mexican civilians. These guns included 50 cals, FN Five-sevens (pistol that shoots through soft armor border agents wear) and guns with punisher skull accessories. Even early on, after 200 guns were found at crimes scenes throughout Mexico and the death of a US border agent, the operation still continued despite literally no indictments up to that point.
Arming one cartel member is too much, arming thousands with advanced guns is an unmitigated disaster that still has consequences today. The funniest thing is of the guns they were able to track, the majority ended up in the hands of Mexicans legally living in the US, not cartels honchos like they expected. Although it was later found in El Chapo's den that he had at least one of these guns, there was 2 found in a shootout with the Mexican military and a dozens were found in connection to the death of an ICE officer.

>Why bring this up 10 years after the fact?
The issue has been taboo for awhile in both countries and a settlement put through although the Justice Department didn't fully agree. This wasn't brought up until last week, however in December 2019 the former Mexican minister for security was arrested in Texas on drug trafficking charges for allowing the Sinaloa Cartel to operate in Mexico for years in exchanged for cash, while both the Obama Administration and Calderón administration knew. Eric Holder clearly knew and decided to obstruct justice.

Recent address by Mexico's foreign minister:

Obama lying on Univision about his, Eric Holder and the Mexican's governments knowledge of this and then refused to release the documents until four years after, 2016:

>Will this happen, what will happened?
I don't know but it's hard to tell with the current Mexican President, he's a true wild card being a left wing populist who totally supports Maduro. Most Mexican presidents are US puppets, but this guy seems to oppose the US' imperialism. I would hope Trump is willing to do an investigation into the whole thing, but I wouldn't be surprised if the US was still using similar methods.
However now, the Mexican government is pushing Trump to provide some answers as to what went on exactly and if the former president was involved, seeing as the former security minister got charged with taking millions in allowing the Sinaloa cartel to thrive with info and safe passage for drug transportation.

The only redeeming quality about the Obama administration is that we will never have a black president again.

It was a dumb operation that spiraled out of control and instead of owning it, they lied about it. First administration to ever having a sitting cabinet member held in contempt of Congress. Really just a bunch of shitty people, you have to be lying to yourself to say he was a good president.

As re:tarded as it was, at least they had good intentions I guess? Instead of, oh I dunno....selling military arms to a hostile terroristic nation and smuggling plane loads of cocaine into the states to fund another group of terroristic rebels all while also creating the crack epidemic and destroying urban centers around the country.

Remember when reddiards swore up and down that Obama was a spotfree president whose only "scandal" was wearing a brown jacket in an interview or some shit?

I remember when Obama was President and the media was so happy, everything was going great according to them. We had our weekly snippet of Obama getting takeout, or Obama riding a bike. Of course the redditors would say his Presidency was perfect, it's what they were told the entire time.

The end result of either policy was functionally the same: drug trafficking to the US was subsidized with tax-paid firearms. You're praising the glowies for feeding you the same pile of dogshit as before, because they've thrown a slice of bread on top of the pile and decided to call it a sandwich instead.

The hilarious part was that Bush tried a far more limited run of this, with all of the guns having RFID tracking on them. The cartels quickly found the trackers, disabled them, and the Bush admin basically said "this was utterly worthless. Nothing was gained. Don't do this again." So Obama and Co. did exactly the same, but without even the fig leaf of RFID tracking, of thousands more guns.

And they did this to prove more gun control was needed. If the one gun store hadn't recorded ATF agents ordering them to sell to a person the gun store owner had refused to sell because he was certain the guns were going to be given to criminals, he would've gone to jail.

It's almost like nobody told them that passive RFID tags have a maximum read distance of 1.5 metres at best. At that point you're better off engraving some kind of a unique identifying number on the receiver of the gun. Oh wait....
