Not to go all Bill Clinton, but it occurs to me we are perhaps missing what "almost" means. Consider the source. We are assuming "I almost cut my stomach open last night" means "Last night, I indulged in such vigorous cutting that I nearly had my intestines in my lap." It could just as easily mean "I almost cut my stomach open, but I couldn't find a razor or anything, so I had a pint of Ben & Jerry's instead."
