Favorite Movies of 2019 - Which films that you saw this year were the best?

  • Intermittent Denial of Service attack is causing downtime. Looks like a kiddie 5 min rental. Waiting on a response from upstream.

It took me forever to see it in theaters but Joker was amazing. I knew what would happen because of memes but the journey to get there was stunning!

I’ll admit that I haven’t seen Joker or The Irishman yet, but I hear that they’re good. So here’s my top three.
1. Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood was just a great time. I love Tarantino, and I really like his more ‘mellow’ movies. And I would say that this one was more mellow, for most of it at least. Think less Kill Bill Volume 1 and more Jackie Brown. It had the Manson murderers in it, but it wasn’t really about them. It was about an actor struggling with almost everything in his life, contrasted by a stuntman who has nothing much but is immeasurably more content with his place in the world. I highly recommend.
2. Rocketman was a movie about Elton John and his crazy life. I thought it was much better than Bohemian Rhapsody In showing the sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll in it’s main character’s life. It is a spectacle, to say the least. My favorite scene, hands down, was when Elton is with his wife at breakfast, making a massive screwdriver, and just starts crying. It’s a beautifully done, fantastically emotional movie. Worth watching even if you don’t care for Elton John’s music.
3. Dolemite Is My Name was another movie about a guys career, one in comedy and then Blaxploitation cinema. Now, I may be biased because I love the good Blaxploitation films, original Dolemite included, but I think this movie did a very good job of showing why it was so special. It summed up the goofiness, the violence, the fun plots, the occasional deeper themes, and low budgets from the point of view of those making it.
Honorable mention to The Polka King, where Jack Black plays a Polish dude who runs a scam and gets himself so deep he can’t get out. That’s one I didn’t expect to like as much as I did.

My best overall film of the year is A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. If you grew up with Mr. Rogers as a part of your childhood, you owe it to yourself to see the movie.

But artistically, my best film of the year is Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood. It's among Tarantino's best films, period.

I think mine's Joker as I saw it five times in the theatre. I'm going with the flow when I say it's one of the best movies I've ever seen.

Marriage Story was also a really good movie. I wasn't expecting much but damn, it was good. I'm sad I didn't get to see the Lighthouse... it didn't seem to come out near me.

I'm going to cheat a little and say while it wasn't one of my *favourite* movies of 2019 per se, I really appreciate how much effort and technical talent went into making Klaus because I'm a shmuck and I just want to see more 2D animated movies and Klaus was beautiful-looking.

I have a feeling that Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood will go down as one of Tarantino's most divisive films, next to Jackie Brown. Those who like it will think it's one of his best, those who don't will think it's one of his worst.

Only one of these movies is the official "favorite", with the rest being among just my favorites of the year.

Sadly I didn't see much in theaters this year. with only two of the best I actually saw in a theater (Uncut Gems and Once Upon A Time)

Best/Favorite:

  • Ruben Brandt, Collector

Runners Up:
  • Uncut Gems (Sandlers' second best film, after Punch Drunk Love)
  • Midsommar
  • Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (half of it, at least)
  • Under the Silver Lake (technically its a 2018 movie but it only got a release here in America in 2019)
  • The Nightingale (also technically 2018 but its american release was in August of this year)
  • Dragged Across Concrete (the song Shotgun Safari alone is enough to make this on my favorite of the year list)
  • El Camino A Breaking Bad Movie
  • Klaus

Films that didn't make my top or runners up but I know are well liked anyway:

  • Joker (Joaquin did a fantastic job, like I wouldn't be mad if he won the Oscar, but I thought the movie could have done a lot better in terms of what it wanted to do, almost everything felt surface level in terms of what it wanted to talk about)
  • The Irishman: (Just didn't click with me, although it was nice seeing Jim Norton in a film that wasn't dogshit)

Worst of the year:

  • Black Christmas (when you somehow make the 2006 version look great in comparison, you know you fucked up. This remake just straight up pissed me off)

Parasite, Joker, and The Irishman are the only 2019 feature films I've rated an 8 or higher on imdb, so those I guess.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was just okay. Toy Story 4 was well-made but completely pointless. They should have stopped at 3.

I second Ruben Brandt, Collector being my favourite movie this year as well. That and Shadow are the most memorable ones I saw in 2019. I've yet to see Parasite, hopefully I will soon.

Am I allowed to list documentaries as well as feature movies? Because in that case I want to mention the Unnatural Selection documentary series. Holy fuck, I am still thinking about it right now.

Worst movie of 2019: Edward Norton's Motherless Brooklyn. I knew nothing of the story and went to see it purely because of the cast and it was such a major disappointment. I wonder how Norton was able to get away such a hamfisted portrayal of a main character, but I guess that's one of the perks of writing and directing your own movie, which he should frankly never do again. And the plot, so weak and predictable.

If it was something that came out this year then Joker. But if it's something I just saw, maybe My Suicide or Super Dark Times. I don't see A lot of stuff really.
