I think that his "commissions" refer to his Black&White commissions, which are original art based upon the buyer's wishes, so it's not like he can just mass-produce them.
Like vidyagames offer escapism from people's daily lives, similarly a fake girlfriend experience can give him happy thoughts and a feeling that there's someone out there who cares about him and doesn't have an obligation to do that(like Barb). And hey,if it's actually a true and honest sweetheart, the better.
You know, even if it turns out to be a troll, I still think he should be grateful that he has gotten the simulated girlfriend experience. I mean, to quote a horrible cliché, life isn't about the destination,it's about enjoying the journey. Chris has got his rose-tinted blinders on again. He sees the latest troll as his girlfriend, sweetheart, mother, caregiver, wife, child-haver, and sex-times maker.
