I'm just surprised Chris is apologizing for something so simple as flipping the bird, especially when he was provoked.
He's done way worse things, not necessarily provoked, and never apologized for it.
I think it shows some personal growth that he reflected on it and apologized. It's not hilarious for the masses, but anyone who knows of him well enough to scream at him in public is probably likely to read the apology here or elsewhere!

Instead of Chris's brain taking lots of time to reply, his reaction is more like "Something was said about me! better flip the bird in case it was offensive!"
So translation here is: Because I am afraid of rain and lightning, I flipped off some dude who yelled my name? Can you imagine what he'd do if God let loose some thunder?!
