Probably not all that much to say on this one, but there are a few things worth noting.
  1. 'Live long and prosper' is an interesting sentiment to say to a man who's just died.
  2. Watermelon has never heard of modern makeup and CGI.
  3. Is Chris a trekkie? His past usage of the 'captain's log' introduction to his vlogs and now honouring one of Star Trek's poster boys would suggest so, but the franchise has never been bastardised in Sonichu or mentioned anywhere else by CWC (unlike all other pop culture Chris has been exposed to over the years).
  4. This is the first time Chris has broken radio silence since his hearing. Surprisingly, he even resisted from doing so on Christian Love Day.
  5. This shit might be too minor.

Chris is not the first person to use the phrase incorrectly. People associate that phrase with the role that made Leonard Nimoy famous and it's a profound "Goodbye".

" He lived long and prospered " is more accurate, but less elegant.

Illogical, isn't it?

I know he did the Captain's Log thing, but other than that I never really noticed too much interest in Star Trek on his part. Does anyone recall any star trek stuff? Or is he just one of those assholes who has to make a big show on social media when a celebrity dies?

From what I can gather, these 2 sporadic instances are his sole acknowledgements of Star Trek. I can only assume he did so originally because it was something that was part of the zeitgeist during his childhood, and therefore he felt that (even though he may have never seen an episode in his life) he had to mention it, because everything that Chris knows is 'good' has been spoon-fed to him by popular culture. It has also been referenced in a number of his favourite shows.

Plus I think he is just one of those assholes.

Nimoy was a multifaceted and accomplished artist. Maybe Chris sees some similarities with him. Even if Nimoy was a dirty dang male jerk in his mind. As usual, Chris being Chris. Waterman's still there? Why?

Live long and prosper, Kiwis.

Yeah, I never pegged Chris for a Trekkie. I think he just picked it up from Family Guy, The Simpsons, or some other pop culture medium without really knowing what it was about. Then again you could probably say the same about most of the shit in Sonichu.

Perhaps more interesting (at least for Chris) is the fact that Leonard Nimoy also voiced Galvatron in the 1986 Transformers movie. Sadly Chris is probably unaware of this, as he didn't even mention it in his FB post.

I am guessing he simply saw other people do it and is incapable of identifying nerds, so he may have mistaken those antics as "hip" instead of "nerdy" and started doing them to fit in.

Chris isn't a Trekkie. The "Captain's Log" introductions were a reference to when Family Guy parodied Star Trek in an early episode.

That said, Nimoy's made guest appearances on The Simpsons and Futurama, and he was Galvatron, so it's not a huge shock that Chris knows about him.

On an unrelated note, Facebook doesn't notify me when Chris posts anymore even though I've set it up to. Bugs the hell out of me.

The idea that Chris ever watched a single episode of Star Trek the original series is so ridiculous to me I have to get someone to confirm it. Because I'm in utter disbelief that Chris is even aware of Leonard Nimoy. As Enceladean points out

I've seen a lot of people using 'Live Long and Prosper' as their goodbyes. Occasionally in the past tense, but less than you'd expect. I think it's a generic response from people to whom this death didn't mean much. Nice of Chris to break the silence finally though.

(A friend of mine posted this. I found it oddly poignant. I will miss Mr. Nimoy.)

I'm not sure how much that really says. We know Chris likes Star Wars and used to have a bunch of Star Wars toys displayed in his room, but Chris rarely talks about it and as far as I'm aware Star Wars is never prominently used in Sonichu. It could be the same with Star Trek.

If "live long and prosper" was Nimoy's catchphrase, I wonder what catchphrases people will spout when Chris dies. "I'M BROKEN DEAD" "Lesbian Transgender from the Ground-Down" "I finally fixed my biological clock" "Bury the Autistic" etc...
