Are we going to just keep them as typical announcements now or are we going to re-instate them? I'm aware that the current version of XenForo doesn't have a proper widget for it, but is it going to end up being deprecated or is a new proper widget going to be made?

No this is a bad approach.

All effort should be laser focused on making sure we have up to date featured thread information. If that information was accurate I would bet money the ddos attacks would stop.
