For me, its about the people feeling a need to push for a change to be represented equally in a market they do not share equally in, not the characters in games.

If nearly half of gamers are women, does it not make sense to have more women in games? Also, do you have a solid source that these people are pushing for more representation than they actually have?

Don't derail the thread guys, this is about overthrowing the patriarchal status quo.

People need to start checking their privilege and stop making jokes about womynhood while rape culture and the male gaze are destroying the fabrics of our society. We need to stand strong, for the rights of our genderfluid pansexual babbies!

Less talking, more checking.

The amount of gamers vs the dollars they spend are not going to be equal. My sister is a perfect example. She has bought a small handful of games, but she is a gamer. She probably hasnt spent a grand on games. If half of all gamers wanted games to change and made purchases accordingly, it would have happened already and everyone would be happy.

Numbers, stats, dollars, show me the evidence.

I cannot say much about gaming purchases as I am not a nerd.

However you seem to be assuming that gamers purchase the games they play. While this me be true for a good portion of them, a very large number of people (myself included) just download shit. The smartest girl I know is an average reader. She's not wealthy and has very little money to spend on anything outside life's basic necessities. Most of the books she reads are, as a result, downloaded copies of e-books. And back when I was young and played some games, I would always ask technically savvy relatives or friends to download them for me.

There may be a lot of female gamers who game all the time, but never purchase the games they play. No statistics would cover them. This goes for several things in life. One might assume a certain group of people reads little, since they purchase few books the same way one would make such assumptions on a certain groups gaming habits. But it doesn't necessarily have to say anything.

PS: I only ever played Age of Empires, GTA and the Sims so I am not much of an expert on the matter. I am sure there's many women who are much more of a "gamer" then I'll ever be. In fact I know several of them. So girls not being as much into gaming as guys is a pretty silly stereotype from my experience.

So your arguments have no real basis in facts?
Yes they do. The fact is the game industry does not see the monetary value in catering to this specific market. All they care about is money, they have no ideology. If the money were there it would happen.

Meh, i never got into pc games so yeah....i only am referring to people who purchase. I doubt a game company would cater to people who dont pay anyways.

The game industry is lazy. Look how much more people in this poll prefered FemShep to MaleShep: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/for...le-Shepard-vs-Male-Shepard-Mass-Effect-Series

This is not a sceitific poll, but if you look around the internet it seems people PREFER FemShep, despite not being canon. I think this shows a demand for Female Characters.

I often play as female characters. The concept doesnt bother me.

Best of luck to anyone aiming to change the market, but they follow the money. Pure and simple.

http://thinkprogress.org/alyssa/201...o-where-are-the-female-video-game-characters/

According to a report released this week by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), 45% of the entire game playing population are women and they comprise 46% of the most frequent video game purchasers. The study, 2013 Essential Facts About the Computer and Video Game Industry, found that women 18 and older make up 31% of the video game-playing population, while boys 17 and under represent only 19% of today’s gamers. Another study released by Magid Advisors found that 70% of women between the ages of 12 and 24 play video games. The study also found 61% of women between the ages of 45 and 64 also play games, compared to 57% of men in the same age group.

46% of video games are purchased by women. Nearly half of the money is coming from women. Ball is in your court dude.
