Kind of the problem with fetish communities is that a number of them seem to have an attitude of anything goes for the most part. If people know that they're similarly weird, there isn't going to be that much in the way of moderation unless someone does something indefensibly awful. I don't really care what gets your rocks off but a number of communities like this tend to reinforce even wackier behavior over time since they become hugboxes quickly.

Sorry to say but I know more people that this would horrify then it would appeal to, but horrify in the best possible way.

Most of them are from California, and the other thing that stands out is most of them started this path at a young age.

Is that a subculture that actually existed in the early 70s? because I thought J.G Ballard made it up as satire (or critique of alienated yuppies or something). Then later, the book and film created converts.
Not sure, I was a toddler for most of the 1970s.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was a real subculture then however, a dark splinter offshoot of the "street draggin" with muscle-cars that started as early as the 50s but reached it's peak in the late 60s-mid 70s before the big oil crunch and huge all-metal monstrosities with gas-guzzling supercharged V-8 engines fell out of fashion and/or affordability.
