So based on the following image, Nintendo ain't sold on the new EVO either. This seems like corporate speak for "We'll host our own events."

On the one side, sweet no Smash at EVO to promote match colluding and child diddling. On the other side, even if I didn't watch it, it takes off a bit of the prestige of EVO. It was supposed to be a showcase of fighting game's best, even if it wasn't necessarily the largest event for that specific game, like Tekken World Tour, Genesis, or Capcom Pro Tour for example. Probably just more examples of the soul getting sucked out of the FGC and further proof of what we've lost.

The largest fighting game competition in the world, EVO Championship Series, has just been purchased by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Newly-formed eSports organization RTS joins Sony in the acquisition of EVO. "Fighting games have been a vital part of PlayStation's legacy and our community since the very beginning, and we've been thrilled to partner with Evo over the years," said Sony's vice president of competitive gaming, Steven Roberts. "EVO co-founders Tom and Tony Cannon will remain closely involved in an advisory role to ensure EVO continues to service the fighting game community and support its vibrant growth."


■ EVO Online Kicks off in August 2021

With the support of world-class publishers, Evo is returning this year as Evo Online, a fully online competition taking place August 6 – 8 and 13-15. Entry will be free, and players in North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America* will be able to compete in BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment’s Tekken 7, Capcom’s Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, Warner Bros. Games’ Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, and Arc System Works’ Guilty Gear -Strive- in an open format. The online qualifiers will be livestreamed for fans, and more details will be shared in the coming weeks on evo.gg.

Our collective team is laser-focused on one mission: preserving the authenticity of Evo for the fighting game community and finding creative ways, alongside our fans, to grow the tournament and make its events and broadcasts more fun, engaging and accessible than ever. We know SF6 is in development, Project L might eventually be a thing, we're getting a new "Guilty Gear" game soon, and Skullgirls is finally getting a season pass after 9 years. If that doesn't say fighting games aren't dead I dunno what does.

What is dead is the community that evolved from the arcades and grew the strongest players and strongest competition. Also the breeding grounds for that community to exist is dead what with coroner-chan spooking everyone. All we get now is consoomers spending their government stimmies on nostalgia trips before shelving the game after 3 online matches, and corporation sponsored events that have cup noodle matches and behavioral committees.

Maybe we can get major tournaments sponsored in states that reopened, but that's probably a death-sentence for anyone going socially. In the SEA region they basically have locals without regard to coroner-chan, Singapore I hear has like 40 person weekly locals, but there's no majors to grow to. This is the truest representation of the fgc in 2021 we have currently:

It's going to be the same bullshit as before: no rollback netcode and/or shitty rollback netcode. The game will not have crossplay and there's a decent chance of Epic Gay Store exclusivity. Then the game will have the usual bullshit with TOD combos and other flashy nonsense.

Next on CancelWatch, tekken got a little too good ass. Reepal "Rip" Parbhoo has committed the final sin by busting out the heated gamer word. According to this link, Rip stole that round and more with his white supremacy. Archives below:

Rip has of course written his twitlonger. I'm actually kinda disappointed, but tekken players were never scholars.

The FGC stayed largely silent, though one has come to bat for his defense. We'll see if this is a one chance only thing like Mike Z, or if this truly is unforgivable.

The twitter responses have been pretty rough on ol' Rip, who originally said it was just a "grunt" sound effect during the intense match. I ultimately don't think Rip will fall, it was a small stream and the outrage seems minimal. What's more fascinating is to see who the mob holds accountable and to what standards.

They really aren't. You can make that argument for 3D fighters such as Tekken or Dead or Alive, or Virtua Fighter, but 2D fighters are simple as fuck. especially if you're playing old-skool shit like Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo or Street Fighter Alpha 2/3.

Alot of "pros" will tell you it's complex, but most of that shit is just manipulating the mechanics to your advantage because half of that shit is broken with wonky-as-fuck priorities on some moves with some characters, which is why you will constantly see the same 4-5 characters being picked anytime you play anyone online, especially in tournaments.

I could write a book about how some of the "strategies" people in the FGC like to throw out are complete horse shit, starting with almost everything that's on the SRKWiki.

Sometimes its less about these "strategies" being an objective thing and more of a weird meta tool to hype yourself in to a mindset that you can use said tool/move/combo/strategy/whatever to win. A lot of the bullshit is more of a vehicle to keep in the competitive mind set, and at the end of the day, you can't win if you don't play.

Since we announced the next chapter of our story with Evo in March, we’ve been gearing up for an exciting Evo 2021 Online tournament in August. Today, we’re thrilled to reveal even more opportunities for you to play, watch and learn your favorite fighting games as we help kick off the Evo Community Series, a global celebration of the fighting game community (FGC) starting on June 10.

Evo Community Series (June 10 – Aug. 3)
Starting next week, the Evo Community Series features more than 120 tournaments across the globe, $74,000 in total prizing, and more than 100 hours of broadcasts.

As part of this community celebration, PlayStation is hosting three tournaments from June 10 through August 3. Eligible PS4 players in select regions across the globe will be able to participate in these open-format competitions for a chance to vanquish rivals and win cash prizes (details below). Select matches will be broadcast on the PlayStation Twitch and YouTube channels, as well as Evo’s Twitch channel.
