Bah, most of my stuff is on the 360 because I don't have a multi-platform fightstick, and the two games I do have on PS3 (MK9/Injustice) you don't have.
Might get any future iteration of Street Fighter on PC though, we'll see.I'd like to think I have 80-90% of Akuma's pre-Ultra combos down to an art...in the Training Room. I'm going through the transition of finding legitimate ways to pull them off against opponents, looking down the list of openings and setups. Online is alright, but pretty deceptive in how much you can get away with. You could spam Zanku Hadokens all day and win a pile of matches, but the lag doesn't translate well for combo practice.
i know that feel bro. i can do tatsu loops all day in training mode but online is a crapshoot.
steam *just* had USF4 for 17 bucks yesterday but i think the sale ended. it's probably go lower closer to xmas. i think you'll like the akuma changes, he can do really fun new combos now that you can cancel st.hp and do EX zankus outta demon flip (watching st.hp > ex air fireball always makes me laugh)

Huh...I'll have to work that into my moveset.
It's funny how much better you can get at playing the game without noticing. It took me some 3 months of on-and-off to complete all the Akuma trials, and now I can beat them all inside of 10 minutes. Also kind of nice how much patience gets instilled into your head to pull off some of these combos too - the windows for some of their execution are longer than you might think.
Except El Fuerte's RSF loop. I don't think I'll ever get that one down consistently...
bumping this thread to say that KOF 98 UM final edition is going on steam the 11th and is (oddly enough) around 11 dollars if you preorder.
for those not in the know, king of fighters 98 is arguably the best in the series, and to some the best fighting game of all time. it's got a huge roster, deep mechanics and you can change how your meter/supers/movement work to fit your playstyle. and since it was made over a decade ago, it should run fine on potato-tier computers. hopefully snk's improved the netcode since releasing KOF13 though.

It's fun. It's similar to the latest Mortal Kombat, but faster and more practical (regular back-blocking as opposed to button-blocking). I thought the environmental hazards and transition boundaries would ruin tournament potential, but it endured for at least two EVOs. Don't think it'll be a main event next year with GG: Xrd Sign and Tekken 7 coming out, but I did enjoy the short time I spent playing with it. It's a game I'd like to try to do competitively but don't have the motivation.
I really love Jump Ultimate Stars, which is basically Smash Bros with Shonen Jump characters (Dragonball, One Piece, Naruto, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Bleach, et al) instead of Mario and a million characters from games I've never heard of that came out the year I was born. But that's really violating the spirit of the thread. In any event I like Don Patch in that game, usually with Monkey D Luffy backing him up.
In terms of actual fighting games I've taken a shine to MUGEN recently. You have to be really careful with it because it can get stupid, but if you select all the characters yourself and choose them for balance (instead of downloading one of those packs with 300 characters, 8 of which are usable) you can effectively make your own fighting game.
The only real fighting game I'm not a total scrub at is Darkstalkers 3, and it has to be an arcade machine. I can only play it with a giant oversized joystick and sticky buttons. They had that game at a shitty camp site my family had a family reunion every year at (if it's annual, it's not really a reunion is it? It's just a party nobody wants to attend at a camp site that's awful) so my cousin and I would basically just bum change off relatives and play the ever living fuck out of Darkstalkers. Of course I used Lillith because I was a young boy and playing Felicia would have been showing too much of my hand. I'm also partial to Anakaris.
Oh, actually (getting stream-of-consciousness now) there's another fighting game I can play: Dragonball Z Tenkaichi Budokai... 3 I think is the one my friends and I got good at (I never owned it and we just call it "Budokai"). I played that a few months ago for the first time in years and it was like riding a bike. I'm so irrationally attached to playing Broly in that game that I'll use him in other DBZ games where he's just completely terrible out of a twisted sense of loyalty (and a desire to sing his theme song, which I have written). Broly is especially good in the point buy battles because he is underpriced if you start him at his lowest level form and level him up to SSJ during the match.

it's good, but it encountered some problems with interactables and poorly-made dlc characters (lobo is ballsack tier, while martian manhunter has a special move for every conceivable situation). but beyond that, it's just the string system is very limiting, like in mk9. nearly all the tech has been figured out and there's not much to explore. some might find that refreshing (you can focus on your okizeme game), but too often neutral is just aquaman doing trident rush over and over.
still, i feel like the knockdown game is fantastic and the difficulty curve is great. just watch out for unwinnable matchups and don't play the joker ever.

I like SC2 and SC4. I have the GCN version of SC2 so I tend to stick with Link. For SC4 either Amy or Xianghua. I like sword wielders depending on their fighting style.

Welp, that whole Tekken 7 business of region-locking Lucky Chloe was false, though I figured it was. Harada seemed very sarcastic when he proposed that he would make a Nazi white male for Americans because they didn't like the catgirl female.
I don't much like her design myself since it's unimaginative, but fuck those who think they should use it as a platform for saying girls are poorly represented in video games, in the same space that Lin Xiaoyu, Lili, Asuka, Alisa and Co. are represented.
Street Fighter V looked okay, but not shelling out lodsofemone for it when there's bound to be an upgrade within the first year. I'll wait for a second or third edition, unless there's something overwhelmingly captivating about it that I can't ignore.

I actually don't play a lot of fighting games outside of Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat, but there's my mains for a few I like.

Soul Calibur - I played on Dreamcast and at the time I was just trying to unlock things so I didn't really have a main, but when I started playing the missions, I liked Cervantes the best.

Street Fighter: after he appeared in IV, since that was the first game I really played, I mained Dudley. Always kinda thought projectiles were meh, and that physical attacks were more stylish in Street Fighter games.
Tekken: Used to play Hwoarang, but switched to Alisa in 6 because the idea behind her is just too much fun to pass up.
DOA: DOA5, specifically. I love Helena; I like her character, she looks great and her moves, even though I'm not the best at them, I love the idea behind. I main her because she has those three situations to her-standing, behind the back and in her Bokuho stance, where she can basically launch attacks from any of them. Generally I like the idea of putting up a hugeass string of attacks, so anybody with a combo list that reaches to the moon with tons of transitions in between them is right up my alley.

When me and my boyfriend play Streets of Rage co-op I always use Blaze
Ultra Street Fighter IV is still one of the biggest fighting games out there right now. There's also Mortal Kombat X, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, and Guilty Gear Xrd. There's also Street Fighter V to look forward to in the future.
I barely played through some of them but I heard they're pretty good, though MKX is full of DLC.
back in MvC2 I'd use Son Son, that guy with the sword from that game nobody played, and Mega Man, pretty good with Resident Evil, and decent enough with Dan, too

Mortal Kombat X and Injustice: Gods Among Us are a lot of fun.
rising thunder is free and simple as fuck for beginners. combos are generally short to jump players into the metagame over perfect execution. the roster is tiny and some stuff is janky, but the core concepts are very approachable, highly recommended for neophytes.
usf4 is popular and fun but as a new player, you're essentially studying a game everyone else is sick of. and it will be studying. three frame links are the standard, 1 frame being the most effective. your shitty attacks *will* get outdamaged and mistakes *will* be more severely punished than in mkx or rising thunder. the sense of progression is great, learning does feel good, and the roster is huge. but everything does have a certain....dated quality. it's almost a decade old and people are already singing the praises of sf5.
mkx is probably the best mainstream game released right now. it strikes a nice balance between rewarding and difficult. combos are easy to learn but still require practice and the mechanics have depth. multiple ways to wakeup keeps oki game interesting. the problem is the online community is awful, so try to play private matches. plus, the constant stream of updates from NRS keeps things fresh.
KOF (king of fighters) is for mexicans and koreans. it requires a level of skill beyond mortals. don't.
last but not least, skullgirls just got done. it's a fantastic game with a unique artstyle and essentially combo-gmod. if you can think of a crazy combo or setup, chances are you can make it work. however, the system mechanics are EVE-tier tedious to learn (sticking most players at the 'middling' intermediate state) and against an experienced player, you WILL lose. there's very little forgiveness.
