They still haven't topped Shadows of Valentia in terms of atmosphere and streamlined gameplay IMO. Despite it being a remake.

It violates "show, don't tell," the first half is a cakewalk on Hard, and the three-way war scene is overrated.
Otherwise, it's kind of in the middle of the road when it comes to everything else.

I played it a lot and enjoyed it. The waifus are good but yes they do take up a lot of the content just because waifus are marketable. It’s true.

I doubt it. I've heard IS, or Koei Tecmo, haven't patched the game in a long time. The last one I know of was on February 2020 when Cindered Shadows rolled out.
They sorta outsourced the game which is probably why there haven't been much updates despite 3H's success.

I had to choose between a PS4 and a Switch when I was picking a console. Thought I would get more mileage out of the PS4.
Can tolerate the waifu shilling. Its been a mainstay since awakening effectively rebooted the franchise and is more of a necessary evil to keep the series around at this point. Just wanted to see if there was anything more to its story than the half baked dating sim like the last few entries.
Knowing Nintendo games, it wont ever get another patch and is pretty much abandonware short of it still being available for purchase digitally and physically for the next few years until the next console comes around.
-And here I am just waiting for a remake of The Sacred Stones.

It's different. I'd describe it best as an unpolished gem. It could have been the best FE ever, it just has a lot of problems a directors cut could fix (like more maps, giving Crimson Flower a proper ending, balancing the classes especially the fliers, integrating Divine Pulse into the plot better, giving Sothis more to do and so on) but don't hold your breath on that.
It's main offer is heavy customization of units and a plot/cast better than recent titles. In terms of gameplay, its not as tight as Fates was but its better than Echoes. I enjoyed it a lot but I enjoy games where you have a lot of freedom growing units like Football Manager
It definitely seems to have all the symptoms of a rushed development cycle. From what I recall it was announced and released the next year.
In recent times, the Announcement is typically when development has started and created something to market.
1 year dev cycles are too short to have any polish or true passion behind them, and have become a recent trend over the last few years with a lot of previously popular JP IP's being rushed, buggy messes in under a year, like Pokémon, but the Japanese and their autistic slave driving culture doesn't care.

would you guys recommend I play 3 houses if I am a big fan of the older fire emblems? i didn't like awakening and fates much at all, and I never played valentia. I pretty much think 3-10 are (mostly) solid games. I've been wanting to get back into the series for a while, but am unsure how besides replaying the old games.
If you didnt like the streamlining of fates you will probably hate 3H.
Shadows of valentia (the remake of Gaiden) is what you are looking for.
Has enough original content to be worth the time.

Its about as far from 'classic' FE as you can go. The game is balanced around a smaller army (You basically get zero recruits late game, you might get one post timeskip) but other than that, Ironmans are very much a different beast. As far as the core gameplay goes, it is still Fire Emblem but it's got a lot more trimmings than you'd probably be used to, that can seem like its slowing the game down. Watch a bit on youtube to see for yourself
Well, for starters, you won't have a little bit over a dozen units on the field and most of the main chapters aren't pitted against a large group of soldiers.
It's more of an simulator than a Fire Emblem game, now that I've thought about it.
I still see it as more of an ambitious base of ideas manifested into an actual product, but it appears to carry the water for some greater purpose/project. 3H just seems to be the Dev Dartboard joke made real and with Fire Emblem. Who knows FE17 is just a retrain of Three Houses?

Surprised and relieved that FE didn't follow that annoying as fuck "Trap" trend that went on for a while around the time of the reboot and was spammed all over the internet. Though Hinoka sounds like a dude in Heroes but is an actual chick in Fates.
Hell, furries have already practically been in the franchise with the beast people.
