I haven't been able to find any media that puts this is a positive light besides the Eater, which is... weird considering I can't find anything wrong with it. Am I missing something?

And I mean, if obesity is really an epidemic, and the only reason why the poor are so prone to being obese is because they can't afford produce, wouldn't having the government send you canned fruits and vegetables be preferable?

Canned fruits and vegetables are full of excess sugar and sodium, which both contribute to obesity.

Why is everyone so concerned with what people spend their food stamps on? No one on food stamps is living a great life.

Fairly decent point I saw elsewhere: a delivered box is waaaay easier than schlepping bags of groceries on foot and on public transit. This idea could be good for disabled people and people without cars.

(Also, so far as I know, when you study EBT usage? Making fresh produce is available doesn't actually result in more EBT dollars being used on fresh produce. Fresh produce is more of a buzzword than anything. Anyone else remember all the whining about the fresh produce in school lunches getting thrown away?)

Digging up information on these SNAP changes is pretty hard because people on both sides are either celebrating the changes or screeching loudly about them. I found this screenshot from this article that summarizes what's in the food box.

So it's not a matter of completely revoking a family's EBT card and replacing it with a box of shitty food, it's a hybrid of the government issuing them a box of "basic" food necessities, making a slight cut to their monthly tugboat, and still issuing a credit to their EBT card every month. This seems to be a method to ensure that EBT recipients are at least getting some basic nutrition because I am well aware that there are welfare recipients who blow their food stamps on stupid shit.

It's not thrilling, but it's food. "Shelf-stable milk" is a euphemism for powdered milk, which is fucking nasty. The rest of the example food seems reasonable I guess. When I was very young I remember my family received literal "government cheese" (among other items) and it was the grossest shit on the planet though, so it's a crap shoot. It's pretty staggering what you can actually spent food stamps on. There's lots of things that seem like stuff you shouldn't be able to buy but still can (e.g. blatant junk food). If anything I feel like it would be a better idea to model the SNAP/EBT program off of Texas' WIC (women, infants, and children) program. WIC recipients actually get things like fresh produce and dairy, and their "food stamps" are limited strictly to things like juice, baby food, and stuff with actual nutritional value.

This is the best news I've heard all week.

The amount of fucking abuse of not only EBT cards, but every other govt. social safety net by a crapton of these people is insane. Slight :powerlevel: but I grew up one street over from the ghetto in the town I grew up in, and holy shit the amount of trading favors, property, and goods for EBT card shit was something that even the kids knew about. Had a friend who would, no bullshit, when one of the kids who got an allowance went to pay for something (when we bought a bunch of shit at a convenience store) would casually go "nah, I got this" and swipe his card.

There's a ton of examples of this shit being abused and basically used as a money tree that I can think of, but I'm not really interested in powerlevelling.

What is that percentage? Also, so?

I can't really tell the percentage, it is something they don't really track. (kinda hard to track fraud) Also I don't want my tax dollars going to junkies who sell food stamps for drugs.

This so much this.

Yeah, honestly the people who get the EBT, sell the EBT, and let their fucking kids go hungry is why I think this isn't the world's worst idea. I mean, maybe they'd sell their box of government food? I don't know it it would help or not, but it might?

WIC is not so bad. The milkfat thing is pretty lame, but whatever.

The idea of wholesale rates and preventing diversion is a good, but there's a lot of problems with centralizing stuff like this. They didn't even centralize food to this degree during UK WW2 rationing. Fortunately it's not a complete replacement, so you still get options.

Except they did to a hilarious degree, the only thing they stopped were people buying as much stuff as possible to prevent hoarding. They even mandated how restaurants could serve meals and what said meals consisted of due to rich Londoners eating out several times a week to supplement their rations.

You were typically getting 8oz of Bacon or ham a week and you had a hard upper limit of 1 shilling's worth of meat, meaning you could afford 2 small chops for an entire week.

Margarine and Butter were limited to 4oz per person of both a week and you got 3 pints of milk a week, encouraging you to drink more milk.

Fruit, vegetables were not rationed but supplies for stuff out-of-season became harder to maintain, to the point Oranges were reserved for children and pregnant women.

You were then encouraged to dig up your back garden and grow your own food (which obviously was whatever-the-fuck-you-want).

Never mind the fucking magic that was The National Loaf.

The only thing which was never truly rationed were fish and chip shops which people typically ate on Fridays and considerable amounts of resources were spent protecting the fishing fleet.

If it was as dramatic as spergs claim, that would be a way of kicking the poor down while still clinging to socialist ideals, denying them from selling EBT or buying whatever the fuck they wanted and basically making it so only fruit and veg were open to them in near unlimited quantities and mandating them to tiny amounts of meat to encourage healthier living.

There are lots of things we all don't want our taxes going toward, and we all have to make concessions as we live in a society. I'm not all that fussed about something that helps lots of people and only takes up 2.1% of the budget. It's not like any changes to this system is going to do shit all about the deficit, and it's more a posturing move for the base than it is actually helpful.
