And I know a guy that sells his and his girlfriend's EBT card for 70 cent on the dollar, buys heroin, then resells it for a profit. If he starts getting sent boxes of food every month, he's gonna have a hard time flipping them for dope.
We're having a disagreement, but that is a great line that I will eventually steal.
If you are going to lay down rules/laws to govern how the poor get/use aid, you have to first understand that lumping all of them into "the poors" means you can only issue rules and laws that are as equally unfocused and blunt. Jews and Muslims might not eat non-kosher. Hindus might not consume beef. Food allergies. Digestive health issues. Vegetarians. All these diverse pains in the ass will be included in the group seeking aid. So, do you establish a Department of the Food Box, keeping tabs on what each poor should be getting every month according to their dietary needs/religion/other? Do you set up a call center to answer questions and complaints about Food Box when things go invariably wrong? Who appoints Food Box Director and how long does he keep his office? How much should we allocate for a special counsel when the inevitable Food Box scandal happens and Unilever has been found bribing the shit out of everyone in the Food Box Department?
Or do you just give these poor fuckers $200 in credit to spend on food in a supermarket every month and not worry about less than $1 billion in fraud for a $60 billion program?

I’m not and never have said that everyone on food assistance is defrauding the taxpayers, but enough are that it is a recordable statistic. I also don’t see how giving someone food instead of money for food is punishing anyone except the people that use their EBT to buy things other than what it’s meant for. The current system has little to no accountability on the part of the receipient in terms of using their EBT as it’s supposed to be. People have tried to investigate welfare fraud for a couple decades now, but there isn’t a method to investigate fraud in the current system without being invasive in the personal lives on those receiving benefits, and it always causes a racial outcry because of the disperportionate number of black and Hispanic people using assistance. The program is still going to do what it was intended to do, but in a way that minimizes abuse by people that aren’t using the money for food. Federal assistance is far from a perfect system, therefor you’re not going to find a perfect solution, but this one seems a little more watertight than the last.
My problem isn't so much the idea of giving people food directly as I am about the quality of the food that's being discussed. Powdered mi.lk and canned food (canned meat is especially fucking gross) are fine in an emergency but as a monthly staple are bullshit. If it was fresh, good, food it would be fine, but I wouldn't wish the garbage they're talking about on anyone except maybe convicts.
