I have a confession to make. I am on Social Security Disability for mental health issues and my Doctor doesn't think I can hold down a full time job at this time. I was on it before I knew Chris had it and when I learned he got it, I felt ashamed. I felt embarrassed for being on SSDI and having that check, even if I didn't blow it on video games and sex toys. I am not going into my purchasing habits.
LEGO Friends Heartlake High x8 - ($54.99) = $439.92
LEGO Friends Summer Riding Camp = $119.99
LEGO Friends Olivia's House = $82.99
LEGO Friends City Park Cafe = $39.99
LEGO Friends Rehearsal Stage x2 - ($21.99) = $43.98
TOTAL = $726.87

I winced when I read this, that's almost my whole check. I don't see how Chris can even purchase gas or feed himself, I know I couldn't.

I am wondering if anyone else is on SSDI and how do they feel about Chris? I will also answer any questions about being on SSDI except for my personal mental health issues because I view that as too private to discuss.

I have a disability and,I cant receive SSDI. It frustrates me to beyond belief that he can. It seems like all he spends his money on is toys and McDonald. This is my theory if the man can drive and go to college he can work. It may seem silly but he does get SSI because hes slow. He doesn't seem that slow to me.

If SmokeDaddy wanders along, he might have some worthwhile input. I remember him saying that he's on some sort of supplemental income due to medical problems. He was pretty open about it and had some interesting arguments about the "ethics" involved in spending tugboat, though that was all a forum or two ago. Dunno if anything's changed since then.

Looking at your calculations, it makes me wonder how he stays so fat considering he spends most of his check on nonsense and not on food. He can't eat LEGO.

Part of me dislikes that he spends all his money on toys and fast food but the other part of me knows that he probably couldn't lay down a job for long and that he needs something to live off of.

I'm willing to bet he swallowed a Lego once.

Well, he DID lose weight recently - or at least he lost chins. Maybe he really has been cutting back on McD's to build Manchester High.

Chris has actually prompted me to look for part time work. Maybe it'll end up in a proper job, but damn... He made me feel like a piece of shit by association.

Re: For those of us on disability, how does Chris make us fe

I've got two retired parents on disability. One has scoliosis and severe back problems. The other has had two hip replacements and a spinal fusion. I've watched my mom lose and regain the ability to walk at least 3 or 4 times now. Both of them are currently looking for part time work to make ends meet.

I don't want to say "Fuck Chris and his laziness" but when I see Chris, a 31 year old year old spend almost $800 on lego sets for little else than to appeal to his friends/he has nothing better to do with his time...

It just makes it very hard to justify him having a tugboat. Yes, Chris can't hold a job. But he also has no motivation to hold one and virtually no preparation for the real world. Yes, Barb and Bob were awful parents but I can't help but feel if he never got that tugboat Chris would have learned to hold a job. Instead he's 31 and his idea of a hard days work is washing dishes.

I don't know man. I don't know...

Re: For those of us on disability, how does Chris make us fe

How Chris spends his tugboat doesn't reflect badly on people who draw social security, it reflects badly on Chris. Even if Chris were from a ridiculously wealthy family and had a huge trust fund, he'd still be the same wasteful, selfish moron.

Also, i get that people are pissed that their taxes go to fund Legos and anal beads, but there's really no practical way to monitor that without spending $3 to police every $1 in welfare that goes out. (Not without the term "jackbooted" becoming relevant anyway, and nobody wants that. Trust me.)

Re: For those of us on disability, how does Chris make us fe

I think that the distinction between someone with mental or physical issues that prevent them from being able to hold a full time job and Chris is the mentality. To most people on SSI, it's a monthly supplement that helps them pay bills, buy food and pay medical expenses. Chris considers it his 'tugboat'. His little ship that comes in once a month, like he hit the mini-lottery, and so he spends his money with that mentality.

Re: For those of us on disability, how does Chris make us fe

I don't get SSDI, but I do get a stipend from the VA that I jokingly call "the tugboat." My wife actually wants me to get SSDI due to my medical problems, but I'd rather work and be in pain that accept another stipend. I justify my VA stipend to myself by reminding myself that my health problems were all incurred in service to my country, which is true. As for my spending habits, my tugboat is immediatley swallowed by bills and insurance. I can safely say that the tugboat is used as intended, because there are a lot of jobs I can't do now. Any luxuries we have--and the majority of our bills--are furnished through my wife's job and my part-time position.

So I can't help but be a little angry when I see Chris blow a month's worth of tugboat on Lego. That money should be being used for him to meet a basic standard of living, not for loiteting at McDonald's.

Thats pretty much exactly what he does, and there's not much that can be done about it, as shitty as it is. Lets forget for a second the ridiculous administrative and logistical overhead that would go into making sure that everyone used their government assistance for strictly taxpayer approved things. Bogging down peoples lives with that much red tape would be a complete disaster, and a lot of people would suffer needlessly because the vital thing they need to use their assistance on doesnt neatly fit into some government list of approved things.

Re: For those of us on disability, how does Chris make us fe

(This may or may not be close enough to the actual program in question to qualify for this thread; if not, forgive me)

Virtually all of my college expenses were paid for through a government program meant for disabled people, and I received this due to my having severe social anxiety and Asperger's syndrome. Vocational Rehabilitation offers a great deal of funding (82% now, 100% when I started it in 2009), but has quite loose requirements of participants. Effectively, as long as you don't defraud the Department of Labor in a way that can be substantiated and make at least a 2.0 GPA, you're covered for up to 5 years. In addition to full payments of my tuition, I got a monthly $630 "maintenance" check to cover living expenses (food, rent, etc.).

Chris's abuses of a government program in no way affects how I view my having taken advantage of one, as I cannot control what he does. I knew about Chris LOOONG before I knew anything of Vocational Rehabilitation. There will always be people who abuse the system, and so the only thing I could feasibly do is be grateful of the fact I live in a country that has extended such an opportunity to me and express that gratitude by doing the best I could possibly do with it. I could've smoked pot everyday and half-assed my classes to make the minimum 2.0 GPA, but thoughts of people like Chris (as well as concerns for my own future outside of college) propelled me to work harder than that.

tl;dr: Chris doesn't, in word or deed, show the proper gratitude for his tugboat and the lifestyle it affords him, and this is hardly a reflection on people who receive similar benefits.

I can't believe how many people on the internet supposedly "need" disability. Their disability is probably being "workshy" or something like that. lol
