I’m not sure if anyone really believes HAM won’t race next year. The fact it’s all being done in lockstep with Mercedes, who in a real scenario would likely be very annoyed that they have an uncommitted driver with testing fast approaching, gives it away.
Sooner or later I think he’s going to get a rude awakening as to how unimportant he actually is. The media pretend he transcends the sport, yet he doesn’t have any profile outside of being on the racetrack - he’s not LeBron or Ronaldo or Messi. He’s been useful to F1 for marketing in America on account of being the Great Dindu Hope, but even if that goes when he goes F1 will live quite comfortably without it as it’s a global sport, and F1 can always lean in to their new Chinese driver to grow their brand in a different huge market.
