Okay, I'm all for avoiding waste. Most people would probably think that's a good thing, right?

Freegans take it to a whole new level. Basically, "freeganism" is all about avoiding buying or wasting ANYTHING at all. In order to accomplish this, their lifestyle involves dumpster-diving, trash, squatting in unoccupied dwellings, couch surfing, and voluntarily staying unemployed.
Naturally much of this involves breaking the law. Shoplifting is okay, because consumerism and capitalism=bad. Hitchhiking is cool too, despite the fact that you might end up the next victim of some Ted Bundy-type.
Most of them seem to be spoiled rich kids rebelling against Mommy and Daddy, rather than actual homeless, down on their luck individuals. (Who probably resent these smug little shits stealing all of the good shit out of the dumpster, when they could afford better)

I had a friend at one point who got obsessed with this sort of thing, at least, the dumpster diving part. Someone linked them to it, and they suddenly got extremely defensive over the mindset. According to them, it's just a response to a wasteful society that would rather burn extra goods than give them to those that need them. I'd never have anything to do with it though, just gross as all hell, to me. I'd rather spend a few bucks.

Well I'm not saying she's a lolcow, it was just an example of that sort of lifestyle. I mean, that's trash food, just the idea repulses me, but on the other hand, yeah, it's free. Good on them, if it doesn't kill them.

I wouldn't be touting dumpster diving as against "throwing away perfectly good food" because it really isn't. I worked at several supermarkets and with very few exceptions, most of what was thrown away was bad. Produce was usually halfway to the compost bin and that was when it was still sitting on the shelves. Meat was a complete loss, and either that or trimmings and juices, neither of which are good when tossed at the bottom of a dirty dumpster and/or temperature compromised. Deli items may have been okay but the clamshell stuff that a lot of the fresh food is packed in isn't waterproof and that's bad if you're throwing boxes with raw chicken juice in the dumpster at the same time.

I suppose there are going to be salvageable items (dry items in sealed containers) but at that point, if you're digging through horrible-smelling garbage hoping to score a bag of stale veggie chips that no one bought even on clearance because that stuff tastes terrible, then you still pay a price, often a much higher one.

The real lolcows in this equation are the sjws that scream about freegans getting shit for free, and not valuing the labour (emotional labour totally counts as labour!) that goes into making the stuff they get by PAYING FOR IT OMG YOU WHITE RICH CISHET SHITLORD. For prime examples, see: anything even vaguely 'artisanal' (clothes, food, art etc), stuff done on DevArt, or fanfiction. Not valuing (by paying) someone's ability to think up sewing two bits of rag together to make a bag is THEFT, apparently.

The moral high horse is positively vertigo-inducing with this lot.
