Fukushima Radiation On West Coast -

So we know what happened to Japan. Just recently I heard that it's likely that the radiation could hit the West Coast and it worries me, considering I live in the East Bay Area in California. Anyone have any reliable sources about that?

I remember hearing this a lot. People around here were buying iodine and seaweed like it was candy back when the fallout first happened. I don't know how reliable the people touting the radiation scare are but I haven't heard much of it since here around Seattle. Personally I haven't been too worried about it. The rumors about things from Japan washing up on shore is true, though. I was backpacking on the Olympic Peninsula last year and found some empty bags of Japanese snacks.

I haven't heard much about it, despite living in the north bay area of California. I saw some posts on Tumblr but that's about it.

Keep your eyes peeled for giant lizards who breathe atomic fire and have a taste for Japanese business men.

Radiation goes have a habit of travelling but it's so completely small it makes no difference.

I remember someone saying that after Chernobyl, sheep in Wales had a higher percentage of radiation shit in them, but Wales isn't crawling with super mutated sheep, or dead sheep, so you should be alright.

Also it takes a lot to get radiation poisoning. Like a lot. And mutations like cancer etc that it affects can happen either way.

Fun(Ish) fact I remember from school: apparently I live in a part of England with the highest levels of radiation - decaying granite emits a radioactive gas called Radon. We've got houses made of the stuff, I'm sure you'll be fine.

Look at it this way, I live next to one of the most heavily nuked places on earth: Nevada. Aside from a few people in St. George having problems a few decades back everyone here is OK. You'll be OK.

Clearly you and I have been to different parts of Wales.

At night I still hear the orgasmic shrieks of the unholy sodomysheep as they hunted through the valleys....

I remember when that happened. I think the hardcore Mormons were basically yelling "We told you so! You should always be prepared for this sort of thing!!!!111" and quite a few people were freaking out. They didn't care that iodine only helps prevent just thyroid cancer and that the radiation itself was just barely over the background level. Then after a week or two people went right back to not caring.

This radiation is coming in tens of thousands of miles away from it's source. Yes it's radiation, and yes it has reached the US, and will continue to do so, but it's super diluted and honestly you need a helluva dose to noticeably raise your cancer risk. Really, there are bigger sources of radiation right here in the country. Hanford Site is probably a bigger risk than anything blowing/flowing in from Fukushima. Two years later.

For my :tugboat:, I'd say you should be more worried about the fact that there are more than 70 plants in the US that have the exact same design as the one you're concerned about in Japan. But it's a lot worse than anybody wants to report and yeah, it's on its way to a bay near you in due time. Thanks Japan.

(We should send PixieTeri over to absorb some of it, but her mutated ass would then become sentient and vow vengeance on the world, so that would be a whole different problem being unleashed on the unsuspecting populace.)

Ocean simulations showed that the plume of radioactive cesium-137 released by the Fukushima disaster in 2011 could begin flowing into U.S. coastal waters starting in early 2014 and peak in 2016. Luckily, two ocean currents off the eastern coast of Japan — the Kuroshio Current and the Kuroshio Extension — has diluted the radioactive material so much that its concentration fell well below the World Health Organization’s safety levels within four months of the Fukushima incident.
