Its a common belief that the late Roman army failed due to an over reliance on foreign mercenaries in comparison to the perceived ethnic homogeny of the earlier legions. However, reality was quite different. When a legion was initially raised, it was predominantly Italian, but as it was stationed on the frontier and its soldiers retired or died, its ethnic makeup would rapidly match that of the natives. In the eastern provinces, centurions weren't even called centurio; they were called hekatóntarkhos, who issued orders in Greek.
