Looking back, it's just some man whom nobody even remembers anymore (case in point, he pretty much vanished from the Internet in terms of Twitter for almost a year and still earning $18 a month on Patreon even though he hasn't posted there in 2 years) writing a whiny blogpost about his ex-girlfriend abusing him and her being a shitty game developer (that is if you consider making a shitty short web text novel as game developing) as well as she having relationships with gaming journalists (and contrary to popular belief, no she did not trade for positive reviews, there aren't even reviews by said journalists about the game to begin with, there is positive coverage). The game by his ex-girlfriend is just shitty but not even notable. It's not broken or glitchy or buggy, it's barebones shitty in a boring way. Once you finish it you won't even come back to it. It's forgettable.
And somehow this became a big deal because "ethics in video game journalism".
It wouldn't have ever been such an significant event if not for the very aggressive attempts at clamping down on any discussion of the drama, only leading to the Streisand Effect doing it's usual thing along with like 50+ outlets having the same exact article of "GAMER ARE DEAD" on it out of nowhere. So of course, everyone involved became very interested on how this total nobody has this much pull. If ZQ played it smart, the whole event would have been forgotten in a month but nope, she just had to get her entire social circle involved into a cultural war to destroy anyone who shit-talks their queen.

Zoe wasn't abusive to Eron in the "Ike Turner making Tina eat the cake sort of way", but she certainly was toxic as fuck to him.
She fucked several guys behind his back, despite her publicly asserting that cheating on someone without their knowledge is akin to rape. Whenever Eron tried to dump her, she repeatedly cried wolf and manipulated him by threatening to kill herself.
The final straw for Eron leaving her for good seems to be Chelsea's relationship with Nathan Grayson. This was the simp who boosted her career the most with two articles by him:
1. A Rock Paper Shotgun article from January 2014 singling out her crap Depression Quest game ("A POWERFUL TWINE DARLING!") out of several dozen indie games - even utilizing a screenshot from it as the header and using a pun on the name for the title. This was the positive coverage that kept getting called "a review".
2. A Kotaku article in March 2014 that went into detail about a failed attempt to film a reality show about a Game Jam sponsored by Mountain Dew. Despite there being other and more famous people in it (like JonTron), the main focus was on Zoe Quinn, who was there even though she was a nobody and designed only 2 or 3 crap Newgrounds type games at that point. Grayson painted her as this poor, oppressed woman being targeted by the show producer merely because WOMEN IN GAMING BAD! MUST DRIVE THEM AWAY!
The kicker is that in the CON logs that leaked months later, Zoe admitted that she did everything she could to sabotage the thing because she had a similar "Game Jam" idea and did not want competition for it. She even registered the website for her REBEL JAM the day after the article dropped. The poor producer was not the bad guy that Grayson painted him as, nor was Zoe the helpless maiden.
It has never been confirmed, but it's been theorized that Zoe and Nathan have been buddies since 2012, and she was fucking him behind Eron's back since early 2014. They even went on a trip to Vegas around the time he wrote those articles about her. It was later revealed that she got knocked up at this time and Eron first thought it was his, and then later found out that it wasn't. He did the math, realized that Nathan was the most likely suspect, and dumped her for good. Supporting this theory is Zoe getting several hundred dollars from a Kotaku staffer (Totillo, IIRC) and then getting an abortion. This was suspected as Grayson using a proxy to pay her off to get his baby flushed down the drain, lest it bring even more attention to their relationship.
So I really can't blame Eron for kicking her to curb and trying to warn other men to stay the fuck away from her.

Quinn is indeed a garbage human, but to acknowledge it just kinda plays into the mainstream narrative that GG was specifically about her and other "women in gaming" (Sarkeesian and Wu being the other two professional victims who continue to profit from this).
What GamerGate thought it was was very different from what the mainstream media portrayed it to be. In that respect the comparisons to the Trump fans is certainly appropriate, though again, to acknowledge that feeds into the narrative that the former morphed into the latter.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm of the opinion that, to the extent GamerGate still exists, it's best for us to focus on the true issue - literally, ethics in video game journalism - and not so much on a failed relationship between two nobodies who would have remained nobodies if one of them hadn't been letting a semi-prominent journalist stick his dick into her. That way we continue to show what we are rather than what they want us to be.

I agree with this as It was ultimatly the raw incompetance of journalists and anti-gg consistantly escalating rather than anything GG did which turned it into such a shit show. Their were underlying issues simmering beforehand but that works on whiggish fallacies The whole thing is the streisand effect in hyperdrive, Quinn's interactions with the 'press' look shady as fuck but their's nothing unique here which should escalate if it was allowed to run through the usual gossip mill. The whole thing is an example on how not to use soft power.
If anything Gamergate and the the surge of the edgy right wing culture should send Silverstring media the iron cross since they very obviously did most of the leg work in making everyone hate Kotaku, quinn and anita.

GamerGate wasn't REALLY about ethics in game journalism, that was just the tool that was used to threaten game journalists because the sheer unethical nature of game journalism is well known.
See, GamerGate didn't REALLY start until the "Gamers are Over" articles appeared, when 15+ different gaming websites all posted articles about some random blog post discussing how the "gamer identity" is over because everyone is a gamer now and those that cling to the title are toxic white men who hate women. It needs to be understood that within the videogame community there's almost a central dogma of "Videogames do not make you a bad person", they don't make you a school shooter, they don't make you a sexist, they don't make you bad. The legendary incedents surrounding Jack Thompson (lawyer who kept taking cases where he's blame videogames for everything) solidified this. But many of these Gamers are Over articles flat-out said "Gamers are bad people because of videogames" and suggested that the game industry stop making games that appeal to gamers and try to force them out of the hobby because they're all universally racist, sexist, homophobic, white men.
As for WHY journos would post this? Easy: They're arrogant fuckwits. See, they had been huffing their own farts about how "Gamer" is a stupid word for YEARS and insisted it was a marketing tactic made up by big companies to manipulate the gaming audience so anyone who identifies as a gamer is a whiny man baby tool. While I KNOW the demographic they're TRYING to talk about, the problem is that...well...the term "Gamer" has been in use for decades (at LEAST since the 80s) and it doesn't matter what the origin is because gamers use the term to describe themselves. You wanna criticize how companies slap "Gamer" onto shit products to sell them at a higher price, do that. LinusTechTips does it all the time. But no, they wanna attack the consumer. Why? To make themselves look better. Game reviews these days had quickly devolved into essays about how the reviewer is better than the reader.
So basically, Game Journos declared that "Gamers" represent everything bad about the game industry and society at large and that they are this way because of videogames. Gamers took offense to this and basically wanted them to take it back. They kept doubling down instead, so gamers tried to get them fired. How do you get a game journo fired? Well we all know that they do a garbage job and are hella unethical so just go with that!
Great plan until we realized the real problem: GameJournoPros. A mailing list for Game Journalists where they talk to one another. The truth is game journos get their jobs by being friends with the right people. It has nothing to do with education, skill, or knowledge. It's JUST "knowing a guy". I actively TRIED to become a game journalist for years so I am well aware of this open secret myself. WELL, the entire game journalism industry are friends with one another. They're a clique. So they won't fire eachother even when someone is so incompetent and awful they tank three websites with their shit journalism (Kuchera). Then they start getting encouraged to add politics to their shit and with how volatile politics are in America? That means in order to keep your job as a game journalist, all game journalists MUST espouse the same political talking points.
This explains SO MUCH of what has gone wrong with game journalism. Why every website has the same views, why they always circle the wagons, why they never take an opposing stance.
It ALSO means you cannot make alternative games media because they're all friends with various companies and developers so they can tell them not to send you review copies and actively slander your work or call you website an alt-right neo-nazi site.

They're LITERAL NAZIS!". So GG was silenced. They did everything in their power to prove they were not a hate group and just wanted game journalists not to make wild claims that gamers are bad people because of videogames.
UNFORTUNATELY it turns out game journos are friends with regular journos and got them to run the story from their perspective. This spread around the world and now this warped view of GamerGate is perpetuated. Then the elections came up and Jessica Valenti was paid by Hillary's campaign to slander Bernie Sanders so she invented "The Bernie Bros" and "GamerGate-like group of women haters" who like Bernie Sanders. Once this arguably worked, they then insisted that GG supported Trump to try and slander him while escalating their claims about GamerGate until they were "Alt-Right".

So NOW you can't tell the difference between "Nerd that hates being picked on" and "white supremacist". No one can. Couple that with a news media that has proven itself to be complete lies and well...now you have a bunch of people who need a news source, have every reason to distrust the news, and can't tell the difference between a neo nazi and a sensible human being. Yes, these people COULD be easily manipulated by alt-right nazis. Problem is...the news media refuses to take any responsibility for this. They made this problem. They declared Gamers to be sub-human monsters due to their choice of hobby and when they stood together and said "You take that back", the news media colluded to declare them all neo nazis and then wondered why they're suddenly surrounded by neo nazis. BY THE WAY, fun sidenote: The reason why Zoe Quinn couldn't be talked about negatively on 4chan was because she was fucking the moderator for /v/, Alex Lifschitz. This guy was ALSO the PR guy for a game company AND ran a game journalist convention called "Critical Distance" where he gave a talk (you can find it on YouTube) where he outright tells game journos "You're paid off. You're paid off because I'm the guy who pays you off. No one wants objective reviews. Everyone knows you're paid off. So the only way your reviews will have any use is if you Go Gonzo and use it as political propaganda. Now watch as I desperately try to break this GTA 5 disc."
So a moderator for /v/, a PR guy for a game company, AND a guy who runs a Game Journalist convention and encouraging journos to use reviews as political propaganda. It's like everything wrong with the videogame industry rolled into one person.
Note I said "WAS" though. He was fired from his PR job for villain monologuing. Also last I heard he was getting MeToo'd. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
EDIT: Oh! As for WHY GamerGate is such a big deal and is everyone's new 9/11? Well it was a loss of innocence. Before that, Gamers were mostly left leaning, trusted the news, and didn't bother with politics. Afterwards? Many started to lean or at least sympathize with the right, learned the news was all lies, and began paying attention to the waking nightmare known as politics. Dumbfucks turned all the cattle into raging bulls. All because game journos just HAD to prove how much "better" they are than everyone else...kinda incredible really.
Quinn wasn't the focus of gamergate, but she was one of the matches that started the fire. It was apparent that she was fucking several dudes in the business for insider access and positive coverage. This led to gamers discovering how Silverstring Media - made up of soyboys and dangerhairs - was pulling all the strings in the indie gaming scene to get awards and money to people that were their Friends With RightThink....and had plans to do the same in mainstream gaming.
The fact that 2 dozen gaming sites posted identical "gamers are dead" articles in a 2 day period, and many other sites scrubbed almost any all mention of Quinn demonstrated how hard the gaming industry was being manipulated so that only The Right People were getting coverage, awards, and cash to the detriment of people who actually created games that weren't crap walking sims.
They literally thought this was a good idea, too. Remember when this shit happened? And somehow, this was not supposed to be incredibly obvious? We were supposed to believe this somehow organically happened?
Although technically few of the articles had the mentions of "Gamers are dead", it still doesn't change the fact that it's just so incredibly suspicious that tons of journalists were writing "gamers are over" or any similar variant and just at the timing around Zoe Quinn's fiasco.
