Diseased GamerGate - Autistic MRA manchildren and the twitter feminists who love them

Although technically few of the articles had the mentions of "Gamers are dead", it still doesn't change the fact that it's just so incredibly suspicious that tons of journalists were writing "gamers are over" or any similar variant and just at the timing around Zoe Quinn's fiasco.
It was revealed (by a leaker) that they planned and co-signed each other's articles in a giant private chatroom that only mainstream games journos were allowed into.

GamerGate wasn't REALLY about ethics in game journalism, that was just the tool that was used to threaten game journalists because the sheer unethical nature of game journalism is well known.
You say that, but then you type a very critical wall of text about how shitty the journos were.

What was it about to you if not game journalism?

This is all true except "gamer" is an infantile term that needs to die. It's fundamentally stupid (would you call a film enthusiast a "filmer"? Literature a "booker"? Autos a "carer"?) and more importantly it's existed since the turn of the millenium at least but especially the last decade as a term to sell shitty products with lots of LEDs (and before that pictures of fighter jets and robots on the box) in place of real build quality. It's corporate branded Identity™ at its finest, and it doesn't help that the people that identify as "gamers" are all plebbit consoomers and GOTIS-havers that just cause secondhand embarrassment. "OMG I played League and Skyrim on Twitch all night last night lmbo fukbois I am such a GAMERRR xDDDDDD".
When's the last time you saw a "gaming" anything that wasn't overpriced chink plastic garbage or astroturf marketing?

Those hobbies and others do all have names for the people who enjoy them. I can think of cinephile, motorhead/gearhead, audiophile, and depending on how pretentious you want to be, bibliophile or literarian for books. And in some cases they also have really obnoxious branded stuff that's made for them. Like "racing" car parts and "audiophile" audio equipment.

Missing the point. Those appellations all exist as more and more descriptive than taking the simplest noun and "verbing" them by adding an 'er' to the end. They also convey a lot more personality than simply appending 'er'. And if we're mincing I'm pretty sure the term you're thinking of is "literati". Across a very large sample over many years I've never encountered "literarian".

I saw a lot of anger being directed at the indie scene's incestuous nature and how you can become somebody simply by knowing the right people and having the right politics. I also saw a lot of anger aimed at all journalism for their intentional misrepresentations of everything.

They literally thought this was a good idea, too. Remember when this shit happened? And somehow, this was not supposed to be incredibly obvious? We were supposed to believe this somehow organically happened?

What set off gamergate that people seem to miss is the obvious special treatment Quinn and Sarkeesian got.

Look at the tragetory of Feminist Frequency. The KS got tons of boost to... make videos critical of videogames? Why? It's not like making youtube videos is something that requires a lot of money, people do it for free all the time, and there is no reason why Sarkeesian specifically was more deserving of this boost than any other critic. Feminism in pop culture was on the rise and she got stupid levels of special treatment.

Couple that with the fact Sarkeesian was above criticism herself, everything she said was objective right and if you disagreed you were a sexist baby, and people don't like to be treated that way. And again, why did she get this sort of special treatment? I remember Eurogamer made a list of the most influential people in game and they put her above John Carmack, the man who revolutionized 3D gaming. This woman was dowright worshiped by games media because... she made youtube videos.

Zoe Quinn is a similar case. Between the blogpost and the gamers are dead articles journalists were completely silent, nobody even talked about it, these people who thrive on rushing to be the first to write about something held themselves off to coordinate. Why? Who is this woman, what has she done? Fucking nothing, the first time she went mainstream was an article about how she was "harassed by wizardchan", which is just pathetic.

That's what got to people back then, even if they themselves don't fully realize it, and the follow up to the Zoepost was the straw that broke that camel's back, not the ridiculous "anti-gamer" articles themselves but the idea that some people, for no real reason, deserve special treatment.

I'm not disagreeing with this, but I think it's only a small part of a larger situation at the time. One thing I think a lot of people looking back at it now don't get that the "gaming community" used to be a lot smaller and more niche than it is now, especially the older parts that got into games in the 90s. It certainly wasn't small, but gaming wasn't nearly as widespread in pop culture as it is now. There's also the fact that gaming had experienced a lot of external pressures over the years like the fundies accusing games of being the tools of Satan and whatnot, so the community was in a state of vigilance towards anything they thought might interrupt their hobby.

When the "gamers are dead" articles started coming out, and games journalists started doing what they did, the gamers immediately saw it as an attempt to subvert and misrepresent them and they responded accordingly and from there neither side was willing to back down. So really what gamergate was about was gamers perceiving a new threat to their hobby and telling it to piss off, at least as I understand it.

Remember HuniePop? It was an anime-styled dating sim where you progressed through the dates with the girls by playing a match 3 game. Its developers came out on the pro-gamer side back during the days when we were happy to take whatever allies we could get that wouldn't call us istphobes and that probably helped their game, which was otherwise probably destined to languish in the morass of anime-styled dating sims on Steam, to sell one or two more copies. In peak "what is happening," pro-gamer site Christ Centered Gamer, which publishes game news and reviews with a Christian perspective, actually published a review for it. (I didn't try it myself because l find visual novel games to be as boring as sin - I'd rather just read a normal book - and I don't think a match 3 minigame would be enough to fix that, but all power to the people who liked it.)

I mentioned this because YouTube felt it appropriate to bring to my attention a release trailer for the sequel. It looks basically the same and the fact that there's not a reassurance-hungry social movement for it to latch onto means it probably won't sell as well… I thought it was interesting that one of the characters appears to be a Muslim woman with a head covering who changes into stereotypical Arabian harem garb with the sheer face covering and such during sexier scenes, though. Can't help but wonder if her inclusion is deliberately intended to give the perpetually-offended type something to tweet about and raise awareness of the game that way. Let's see if it works.

Gamergate was one of those things where no matter which side you were on, you were a loser and the only way to win was to not play

Pretty much this.

The fact that the only people still caring about GG are either clickbait mill woke journalists or washed-up e-celeb losers like Sargon, Ethan Ralph, One Angry Gamer, and Saint Anita herself is the proof within the pudding.

Definitely. A lot of people on this site were riding the pro-goobergrape train until Carl Benjamin revealed himself to be an absolute lolcow, at which point they finally realised the whole thing was dumb.

a lot of farmers where not so much pro-gg than they noticed the sheer scale of losers and fuck ups on anti-gg, I was drawn here because of the sheer scale of lolcows the anti side produced even though I decided against supporting GG. The fact most of GG eventually turned out to be freaks and fuck ups was a happy suprise.

I think it's because most of the people on the pro-GG side who were not freaks, fuckups, or grifters all got out of the thing ahead of time, usually before or by the time Zoe and Anita got BTFO'd by the UN of all people.

After that, all that was left were total fuckups like Sargon, OAG, and Ethan Ralph.

Then you had guys like Boogie, who as much as I loathe him, I kinda feel sad for him in this specific instance. Even if his misfortunes are entirely his fault.

He gets depicted as a total centrist fence-sitter but I honestly get the feeling he was kinda forced into it and he'd really rather be a totally apolitical consoomer pig if he had an actual choice.

The only winning move is not to play but he was an attention whore and made the mistake of getting into the fray, which led to him constantly trying to fence-sit so he could stay in everyone's good graces only to end up hated by all.

Gatekeeping? Sounds like it. Not that I blame them for it. The whole GG was a shitshow.
