From my general experiance most left wingers ( and right wingers.....people in general really) don't even know about GG, pretty much all the Femminists I encounter are more concearned about more pressing issues such as sexual violence, the closest I've seen is it sometimes gets included into larger social discussion. You need to be a very specific type of dork to be GG or anti outside of Twitter shit posting and clickbait.

Obviously it skips a lot of stuff and is light on specifics but it demonstrates the origin of the drama in a quick and entertaining way. Really, if you're familiar with ComicsGate or Weeb Wars, specifically the parts about the press colluding to bash large groups of people for wrongthink, it's basically the prototype of that.
And every time the "right" side "wins" it only consolidates the power the MS has over media as a whole. Looking back it's clear that it was a losing battle because no amount of evidence and proof would have stopped the enemies of any of the 'gates and yes, I will call weeb wars "Animegate" because it ended up like the rest of the 'gate movements, destroyed by people that are just as bad as their opposition with the latter being in positions of power and authority that made them nearly immune to the consequences of their actions. The problem wasn't people not being willing to stand against these woke nutter, but that members within the three 'gates autistically crusading against them while parasites subverted the movement.
In hindsight it was better to simply catalog and record their fuckery and present them as the idiots there are while not engaging in direct confrontation of them, because there is only so much the dam can take before it breaks, even with all of the unwitting help the 'gates movements did in reinforcing it. If this was a better world we lived in the drama of GG would have been squashed long before it picked up momentum and progressive Ideals wouldn't be so pervasive.

I actually have, once, in 2014 by someone who used KotakuInAction at the time. By the time Brexit happened in 2016 everyone I knew who was aware of it had moved on to that instead and it was forgotten, aside from a few remaining Twitter screechers unknown to the mainstream.
In terms of cultural significance I'd rank it with that time in 2016 when a bunch of guys dressed up as clowns.
Eh, I'd rank it just slightly higher than the "Creepy Clowns" craze from 2016 solely by virtue of the fact that Twitter wokesters and several major clickbait mills eventually quit talking about the creepy clowns completely while they'll still bitch about GamerGate every once in a while.
If those Buzzfeed and Vice journalists let it go, GamerGate would be even less relevant than the creepy clowns.
