My guess would be the best way to explain to a normie is it's two sides full of obsessive, conspiracy believing people that play video games way too much and use real world events and disasters and label each other as to blame for them. It's people detached from reality who think the video game industry have a real world impact on national and international politics and claim there are groups of "agents" or terror cells out to harass them for whatever they believe and claim any bad thing happening in their life is due to this conspiracy. These people are almost schizophrenic in their paranoia and delusions about it.

If they mention that Wu was on that show about how "The Internet Ruined My Life". Remind them that the show was on the Scy-Fy channel, which shares its programming with shark tornadoes and terrible CGI crocodiles. That it's all about as credible as the "experts" on History Channel's Ancient Aliens.

If you look at the reaction to Wu's moon rock comments then that sets the kind of reaction you'll want to achieve whenever he tries gamergate shit. Treat him and it as a massive conspiracy theory akin to chem-trails and moon hoaxers, since the way the people that obsess over it believe it, it is just that.

The fact is the only time John's claims of "threats" were ever evaluated was that time he claimed the DA was refusing to do anything about threats to him, and that very person posted to explain that John had never even reported anything.

In other words, the only time any fact checking was done on any of John's claims, they were an outright lie.

So when the media repeats whatever shit John says, they are repeating uncorroborated statements from a proven liar.

There's no real way to hammer this again and again when the media doing it are devoted to lying. So it has to be done outside them, and there needs to be some cost for repeating lies.

If GG was to be mentioned in any of this, it would just to be saying what @King n Yellow said or just a variant in that you got two sides of autist trying thinking the other side is some terrorist group. One though could just simply say Brianna Wu is taking neckbeards too seriously that she thinks they are a worthy thing to bring up to congress. Honestly, the best way to address it would be to point to the FBI reports and statements from other law enforcement officials that show Brianna either not reporting anything at all or ignoring everyone to act like a massive tard. The easiest way to counterpoint the narratives she spouts on GG?

Three fold:

1. Point out that Wu went after GG for attention first.
She had no dog in the fight beyond the fact that GG impugned her buddies, so the first and foremost way to shut her shit down is to point out that she latched onto the controversy to try to make herself e-famous. This is not only easily provable (since she was the one who did the whole @BROLOLZ thing and the Oppressed Gamergater meme), but it also circumvents having to get too deep into GG at all.

2. Point Out That She Did It To Herself.
Wu publicly lied about threats she recieved. A lot. She got caught false-flagging herself openly on at least one occasion that there is no way to spin her way out of (Steam False-Flag), and she was unable to substantiate the calls from her infamous Calls From Gamergate video. To date, every single attack Wu claimed was a threat to her life has been shown to be a hoax. You could do some real damage by pointing out how many time Wu was told to stop publicizing her own harassment - whether it was Derek Fucking Smart, David Pakman, or the FBI itself - because she needed to keep up her examples of how harassed she was. Even when she was completely aware she was spouting bullshit, Wu kept doing it.

3. Point Out That She's a Giant Fucking Waste of Everyone's Time.
The Ohio DA incident alone is a smoking gun that's perfect for tying to her Gamergate idiocy, when Wu never filed a police report about alleged harassment from the infamous "Calls From Gamergate" video. Her entire involvement with the FBI, however, is a fucking joy to cover, and completely blows apart anything resembling credibility she might have. She basically kept publicizing her own harassment (fucking up attempts to look into her threats by emboldening others), going after obvious hoaxes (BOMB THREATS AT PAX YOU GUYS I NEED PROTECTION EVEN THOUGH I'M NOT GOING), and, ultimately, not having a single actionable lead. Wu did nothing but waste law enforcement's time and money, and after the dust settled, responded by declaring them to all be in league with Gamergate and announcing she would have them investigated if elected. This is the angle that's the best to hit her on of the three; it shows she's not only willing to waste everyone's time and money on hoaxes, but she's willing to be petty to the point of ludicrous if defied.

All three of these avoid having to get into the grit of GG and let you keep your aim squarely at the ugly troon where it belongs.

Fact is, objectively, the neckbeards were basically right from the get-go, and while they have been vindicated by hard evidence, social Media as a whole, and indeed the mainstream press are still firmly in the grasp of the Antis. Nobody who originally ran attack pieces on GG or sang the praises of Quinn and friends will ever acknowledge that they did anything wrong. You could point out open-and-shut cases of them being fucking wrong and it won't matter. While there's plenty of people online realizing just how much these people are fucking liars, fact is, your average fucking normie has no context, and so long as these groups maintain their hold on the platforms, you're never going to get actual information on GG in edgewise.

Because of that, all you can really do is nail their fuck-ups. It's nowhere near as satisfying, especially when you know you could basically eviscerate their whole platform if you could just air the whole thing. But you can't do that without getting into the confusing spidernest that is what GG dredged up, and for that reason, edging around it and attacking the individual points is about the best we can do.

IIRC the "-gate" suffix happened because Adam Baldwin joked about it on Twitter. And because gamers are idiots they took it as validation and not a man poking fun at them.

I'm just gonna take a second and drop something of a PSA here: The reason GG didn't just stay dead in October of 2015 is because people in its opposition permanently staked their fucking careers to it - and nobody represents this shit better than Brianna Wu.

Even now, Wu pretends it's relevant, ongoing, and a threat to her life. She literally goes on - constantly, and at great length, how it's a microcosm of every misogynistic thing that exists: It's an example of sexism in silicon valley, society, and, she implies, even responsible for that scandal with Uber. During the SXSW incident, Wu repeatedly talked over actual woman's advocates so she could pontificate on how badly she'd been oppressed by Gamergate. During David Pakman's interview of Wu, relatively early on, there was a segment where Wu kept blaming GG on "the industry," to the point where David Pakman had no idea what the fuck she was talking about and Wu refused to clarify. In fact, go watch Pakman's video interviewing Wu for a good primer on Wu in general; watch in fascination how she repeatedly is unable to substantiate any of her claims and gradually loses her shit.

Thing is, as crazy as all that it? Barely the surface when it comes to how insane Wu is in regards to Gamergate. She is an outright mental-case who has declared that Gamergate took control of the FBI, caused Donald Trump's election, and ultimately, took over the country:
