Intermittent Denial of Service attack is causing downtime. Looks like a kiddie 5 min rental. Waiting on a response from upstream.
I know the Starbound Server did alright, but I think we should be thinking of a game where our collective hatred for autisms can really shine. We just have to decide what it's gonna be.
Subterfuge Google Play / iOS, is one of the few not shit mobile MP games out there. Essentially a streamlined (in a very good meaning of the word, namely stripping all the bloat) Neptune's Pride. While technically 2-10 players, it really only works 8-10. It's a game akin to the boardgame Diplomacy where the mechanics are simple and easy to understand, and the complexity instead comes from the fact that everyone is communicating in secret with everyone else, forming and breaking alliances, spreading misinformation, etc. Games last about 1-2 weeks depending on how aggressive everyone is, and movement from one base to another takes hours to days to resolve, and once an order is confirmed, it can't be revoked or diverted barring a particular hero unit.
The biggest improvement from Neptunes Pride though is the fact that since it's a mobile app not a browser based game, push notifications mean when you send a frantic message to someone because that war youve been dreading has finally started, they actually will read it before dinner the next night.
It's free to play with only one in app purchase, that being a full game upgrade. The Upgrade grants access to custom games, ranked games, ability to play multiple games at once, ability to que more than 4 orders in the future (Subterfuge lets you que orders up to 48 hrs in advance to prevent staying up till 2am to launch that sneak attack, this is also the only ingame advantage of having a full membership), and most importantly, the ability to host games.
I've paid for the game after getting some google play money from a relative who thinks I pay for music, so if we get enough people I totally could host it.
Also IIRC it is cross platform compatible.
Here's an LP series done by some guys that shows how the game works both from a mechanical and metagame perspective.

Various Beat 'em ups. Strategy games if we have a lot of free time on our hands.
Helldivers is a wickedly good game and I'd definitely suggest it.
What about 5v5 or similar DotA2/iother MOBAs? A lovely chance to beat other kiwis into submission
Dominions 4 is an excellent and very deep play by email turn based strategy game. A typical game lasts 6-12 months and the graphics are primitive but the systems are simultaneously deep, complex and intuitive and easy to learn. It's by far the best game I've ever played and there's nothing else quite like it imo.

I've been addicted to this for the past week. Quite some grinding but you have to work for your stuff. Also good music.

It's over Skype, but once in awhile I'll run a play by post game.
Played with my friend, totally blew his mind.
I used to play this thing called Boardgame Online with my old synchtube buddies, we'd get about 8-12 players on it. Basically it's a boardgame where you take turns rolling dice in a race to the finish line, but with some absolutely bullshit rules and pickups. Various items allow you to knock back other players or kill them for several turns, essentially it's about being total conniving dickass while trying not to die.
It was always a lot of fun but it seems like they've updated the game a lot since I last played which was a few years ago. I've considered trying to set up a game for some kiwis in the past, but I'm basically too lazy to organise things.

Private server or legit game?
I used to run a guild on a private serfver but we all got bored and left.
I have a lot of fun on the legit game. Demon hunters are coming out in 8 or so months, raiding is amazing, and you can play pokemans with the new pet battling system
