Subnautica. It's horribly optimized.
Sort of crossposting from the Fallout thread, but Fallout 4 is up there. Game runs fine for the most part on mid cards, but the real stress test is when you get to Downtown Boston. If you can handle that, you're good.
Also, any Emulator with internal resolution cranked up from 2x and on. I had a hell of a time getting Beetle to run properly on anything than 1x on an internal Intel HD Graphics card.

An amusing CPU benchmark is Doom in software mode, with a patch making Pain Elementals spawn Pain Elementals, resulting in exponential growth.
It's limited in use since there's no port that supports multi-threading far as I know, so it can only test the prowess of a single-core. At 4.6ghz, you can manage well over a 100k units before you hit 1fps.

Over the years and across different CPUs I have checked how high I can crank the resolution in software rendered Quake 1.

Crysis 1 has a interesting CPU benchmark test. While it did use a video card, the cpu controlled the speed of the camera. I haven’t run it since the i5 4000 days, but I completed the test in 15 seconds with my 4690k
I used to think Ashes of the Singularity being called "Ashes of the Benchmark" was just a meme, but after playing it for a while I can confirm it's a great benchmarking tool.
That was the Direct3D reference rasterizer iirc. It's still around, you can run D3D12 in software very, very slowly.
The new update kinda kills that meme, it’s pretty well optimized but my system is now over killed so idk
Just gave it another spin. Even if it's better optimized now, the scale of that game and how it handles multicore means it's still a good benchmark.
(Also, that benchmark scene is pretty cool. So many things happening at once.)
Ah, it's one of those games where physics are controlled by framerate. Interesting, haven't seen something like that in a while.
