Games you wanted to love that you just couldn't? - Or even wound up hating

TLOZ: Skyward Sword.
Was pretty hyped about the game and there's some things i really like about, like the dungeons, most of the bosses and the music, but stuff like those stealth sections where you get oneshotted, the wii remote decalibrating every 5 secs, all the amounts of filler and backtracking and having to kill the giant avocado monster 3 times made me pretty sour on the game.

hate to agree but yeah

i cleared my schedule the day of release to no-life it, ended up turning it off 2 hours later. what a shame, im gonna revisit it in a few months and hope things have gotten better

I actually reinstalled it and after 2.5 weeks it’s gotten substantially better in the performance department.
Runs about as well as warband now.

Gameplay Balance is still pretty wonky though. You can make 50000+ profit by crafting a 2handed sword out of 6 iron. I don’t know how stable the the quests are, and it’s still a bit grindy.
You also need the community patch to get a portion of the perks working.

I modded it a bit with an exp multiplier mod and Bannerlord is actually pretty fun. Pro tip, go athletics. I know it sucks that you can’t use a horse while leveling it but once you break 100 athletics you can outrun most footmen in the game, and it feels pretty rewarding. It also increases other stats like weapon swap speed and block speed. It’s way stronger than foot speed in warband.

VTM:Bloodlines. Story is good, atmosphere is perfect, but gameplay makes me sad. I finished it with cheats and there’s no way I play it again, I won’t enjoy it.
I had much more joy from playing VTM:R, I fell in love with gameplay when I learned how to micromanage the team effectively, and the story is pleasant.

The modern XCOM games check a lot of boxes for me, but I got bored after the first few missions.

I may give Darkest Dungeon another shot, since last I played it was during early access. I love the art and the gameplay in concept, but it didn’t click the first time.

I get the itch to play 4X games a few times a year, but it’s been nearly 3 years since I finished a game in Civ or Endless or whatever.

I’m afraid I put down Demon’s Souls for too long because it’s getting harder and harder to force myself to play it again, and there’s a part of me that desperately wants to take it all in. I don’t have a PS4 for Bloodborne and haven’t bought Sekiro yet, so Demon’s Souls is the last piece of new Souls content I haven’t finished yet.

Pretty much every Souls/Borne game. The gameplay is....okay I guess, I've heard the lore within the games are really detailed. But man, it's just the form of grinding I hate - the go down corridor, kill, die, respawn, repeat that I just get bored with quickly. The checkpoints are what really kill the experience for me - I still have no idea why they don't put checkpoints next to bosses. If I want to go back and grind, I will do it myself.

I really want to like Mother 3 but it is such a slog. It is easily the most tedious game in the trilogy, and I say this as someone who beat Mother 1 twice. I really want to get into it because people keep praising the story, but the gameplay just isn't that interesting to me. The first couple of chapters are great, fantastic even, but once perspective switches to Lucas the game becomes a real drag.

I quit during one of the chapters where you had to visit two of the needles and you had to fight the Masked Man. I guess I was underleveled, but I really didn't feel grinding up to beat him because I was already getting frustrated at the game's pacing.

And it sucks because I really like the first two games. Mother 1 is dated and really, really grindy, but I kinda dig the more ambiguous story and EarthBound is great all around. Mother 3 just doesn't grab me like the first two.

For me, it's Grim Dawn. It has so many things going for it; nice art direction, great atmosphere, writing that's atypically decent for ARPGs, interesting loot that doesn't require assloads of grinding to acquire, but it's so dull to play. Skills are incredibly basic compared to Path of Exile and barely have any visual flare to boot, and having to invest numerous skill points into them to keep them effective means that you're only going to be using a couple of them. It's somewhat alleviated by items and even upgrades granting skills in addition to what your class can do, but it doesn't make them any more fun to use.

I played through it once and when the latest DLC dropped, I wasn't looking forward to jumping back in knowing that I'd have to do the exact same boring slog before I got to see new content. Also the map is a pain in the dick to fill out and it doesn't carry over between playthroughs, and that triggers my autism.

Two come to mind:

EarthBound - great atmosphere and soundtrack, but the gameplay is incredibly basic compared to other SNES RPGs. It's a good game, but no masterpiece.

Destiny - talk about bland! The most boring sci-fi aesthetic I've ever seen in a game and absolutely terrible writing. If I wanted a game about endless grinding, I'd play Animal Crossing.

Resident Evil 2 remake. This is going to sound absolutely pathetic, but I was too scared and stressed to keep playing. It’s the most unsafe I’ve ever felt playing a game, and Mr X hadn’t even shown up yet. I feel really bad I abandoned it because it was a Valentine’s Day present from my girlfriend, but every enemy encounter almost gave me a heart attack, so I gave up. I still hope to go back and finish it one day.

When I'm traveling down the road, sure, I'll bump into a mutant or to that I can use as target practice but that's it. Most of the time, there's just nothing around.
The lack of random encounters so prevalent in Fallout 3 was a common complaint about New Vegas and at some point this was actually patched.

I felt this way as well, in Fallout 3 if you walked from Megaton to 10 Penny you were guaranteed at least 2 or 3 fights of various leveled enemies. But in New Vegas you could walk from Goodsprings to New Vegas and never encounter anyone.

I'm not sure when it was patched but I'm sure it was after I got the DLC. Depending on your affiliation I would get a half dozen Legions attacking me with some pretty high level gear like the 45/70 brushgun.

For me, it's mobile gacha games such as Fate Grand Order, Grand Blue Fantasy etc. I tried to play such games a few times, just to feel annoyed. I can't stand the grinding, the luck based of everything, or the boring gameplay (just tap here and there).

There's one time I gave them another try, because my crush is a gacha game maniac, and I tought it can help me bond with her, also maybe the games get better since last time I played. Unfortunately no, I still can't stand it. Not interested to invest my time and money on some games that mainly revolve around gambling.

I could never get into FFVII or Majora's Mask, even though they are highly loved games and the music reminds me of my childhood. Every time I play either, it's usually an hour or two, and I don't think I've touched either in months now.

In terms of "wanted to love but ended up hating", Cities Skylines would have to take the bill, being all the worst parts of SimCity (2013) except for always online, and somehow managed to make a game that was not fun, deep, or realistic.

Xenoblade series.

Probably X the most because I like the concept but between just feeling overwhelmed by so many gameplay mechanics and just the worst soundtrack put down to a modern game, I couldn't get it into it.

But they all look like really good games, husband's powered through 2 and its expansion and playing the remake of the first atm. Maybe if X gets ported I'll try again... just hope you can swap the ost for like, music from 1 or 2.

Ico; I love Shadow of the Colossus and I have both on the PS3 edition but man I just don't find the idea of an entire game being an escort quest very appealing (same with The Last Guardian), which is a shame because I wanted to like all of their games, but SoC was just lightning in a bottle.

I play video games to unwind and if I have to study a complicated gameplay mechanics I might as well do college work again.

I really wanted to enjoy Endless Legend but it just doesn't click for me. The races are all distinct and interesting and I like the weirdness of the setting but it just feels like 5 different games crammed into one.

It's got HOMM style hero units roaming the map with small armies, customisable equipment on every one of your units, tactical terrain based combat, but it's all just unecessary busywork. Combat in Civ never gets much deeper than left click on spearman, right click on horseman and that leaves plenty of time to spend on the parts of the game I find interesting, like the diplomacy or building up your economy so you can afford more spearman.

I'm excited for Humankind, at the very least it looks pretty.
