Games you wanted to love that you just couldn't? - Or even wound up hating

I just finished Hades (the main plot, not the epilogue, although I have an idea what's going to happen) and honestly it let me down. The ending just seemed so simple and anticlimactic. Perhaps there'll be somehting more exciting in the epilogue (something with Demeter?) but honestly I'm not sure if I care enough to go through the dungeons again and again just to get the nectar and ambrosia to find out. The bossfight with Hades was one of the easiest in the game IMO, I think the only times he killed me were when I'd had a bad run in Styx.

I'm annoyed because I really wanted to love it. The art is gorgeous and the writing is good (and so is the music), but with the ending turning out the way it has I don't really feel like finishing up some of the sidequests. I was expecting something more dramatic, like a sudden bossfight with Zeus or Demeter. Perhaps I just need to stick with it, but I'm not sure if I want to. I'm mad though, because I usually love rogue likes and plot-heavy games, and I majored in Classics so Ancient Greek mythology done well really appeals to me.

I thought that the slightly prissy woke stuff going on (why is Patroclus black? Why is everyone gay?) would bother me, but honestly it didn't. It just wasn't exciting enough. It's pissed me off some, because everyone's raving about how great the game is and I just don't feel the same.

Titanfall 2. Specifically the multiplayer. The controls felt unresponsive to me. Jumping around felt like I was throwing myself around as a heavy, clunky brick. Also the fact that hipfiring your gun is just as accurate as aiming down sights with it. In my time playing the game, I ended up top fragging by just walking around on the ground and lasering everyone I saw without even bothering to aim. It doesn't help that every gun in that game is accurate enough that they can all kill you in moments across an entire map.

Also one of the worst video game shotguns I've ever seen. It shoots its pellets in a horizontal row, meaning that everything short of a total point-blank shot will deal barely any damage. The titans as an entire mechanic also just felt tacked onto the game, feeling like an afterthought almost. Just a pretty shit game in general.

Several years ago, my friend bought me a copy of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter as a gift and I couldn’t bring myself to tell him that I only played it for an hour. All I remember is that I found it boring and confusing. Maybe I’ll try it again one day, but I’ve never felt like re-downloading it.

I also find Cultist Simulator to be incredibly tedious no matter how many times I play it. It’s too bad, I usually like games with super complex mechanics, but I don’t like having to repeat the same action over and over again with precise timing.

I’m also sad to say that I didn't enjoy Terraria and Starbound. It’s hard to describe why, but I think the worlds just feel kinda lonely and empty. I get that you’re supposed to build stuff and explore, but my flat little 2D buildings never feel like they amount to anything to feel proud of. The NPCs are also pretty limited in their interactions which makes it worse.

I wanted to play MGS2/3 when it was out but didn't had PS2 at the time. Once I got hands on MGS2 port for PC i pretty much liked it unlike MGS3 which I had the opportunity to play 15 years later after the release. Not to mention the MGS: Phantom Pain which I was craving for to play but once I got this on my Xbox I couldn't force myself to play this ridiculous mess.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. I don't know what it is, but the three hours I've given it so far, the ( good)worldbuilding has been in service of really nothing substantial at all. The characters are all slice-of-life anime stereotypes, nothing of any true consequence has happened, and the battle system is just a slog. I hear it gets better in the later chapters, but I just don't know if I can push myself forward to hit that point. At least the music I've heard so far is good.

SSX (2012 version): They totally drained all the quirkiness and personality out of the game. (They took out the Brody x Psymon x Zoey love triangle.) The new characters either have no personality or are poor man's version of established characters. It played fine, but it was just another snowboarding game.

Completely disagree. Titanfall 2 was a breath of fresh air and defied many fps cliches. You just have to be willing to learn the new rules.

The RE2 remake. I bought it without a second thought, because of course I'd love it, and I just... Don't. I don't feel challenged by the resource limitations, just annoyed that I have to leave problems to deal with later. I don't feel pressured by the fucky aiming, just impatient while I wait for the reticle to snap closed the 2-20 times it takes to kill a normal zombie with flawless headshots. And the story, well... It shows it's age.

Breath of the Wild was a welcome change to the Zelda formula especially after the cringefest of Skyward Sword.

It was also incredibly boring and I put it down before I got to the first boss.

I don't like the joycons layout (Gamecube controller is still the apex of Nintendo design IMO) which contributes to it a lot. But the primary problem is that after you leave the Plateau you just...don't have anywhere to go. The Plateau was good because it gave me a mystery and an objective to solve but it also gave me room to explore and test out combat and kill enemies. That was great and I liked it a lot. But then I left and went down and...that was kind of it? The exploration is only sorta fun and it gets old after an hour. Everything is so disconnected from the story that playing the game seems pointless. The objectives are so vague and the map is exasperatingly huge. I don't have time to sit down and grind this shit out like a kid does so having to cover all that ground is pointless. It's also why I don't like "open world sandbox" games. The maps are too big and the objectives are nonexistent and somehow its a selling point to meander for two hours in one direction looking at copy pasted rocks and trees without knowing why you're doing any of this. If I'm going to write my own fanfiction to justify my $60 purchase then the devs should be paying me for writing a script treatment for them.

What's the story? There isn't one! What's the point? Look at the pretty graphics! What if I want more than that? NO ONE NEEDS MORE THAN AN OPEN WORLD SANDBOX GAME WHERE THERE IS NO PROGRESSION AND NOTHING MATTERS FUTURE OF GAME DESIGN IS HERRRRRE

I'm also kind of disappointed that Zelda and Link got lame characterization. Despite the faults of SS at least Zelda actually had a personality there that wasn't "girl with anxiety and imposter syndrome copy pasted from twitter." It also had Groose in it and Groose is the best bro.

Breath of the Wild is gay and boring.

Valheim, it was just so grindy at the start. Played it with another person and we both stopped playing after 2 hours I just couldn't get into it.

To The Moon. I'm a faggot that actually likes RPG Maker-esqe games for one reason or another, but this game is basically a walking simulator like Firewatch that trys way too hard to be quirky that it throws me out of the atmosphere of the game. It has some nice moments throughout and the overall story is good and touching, but maaan are the main 2 characters insufferable. It also has this proto-tumblry vibe to it that is really off-putting to me. It may have not been as bad if I played it in 2012-14, but I can't help but notice it nowadays.

I also got it's sequels in a bundle. Never got around to playing them, but if their any better than the original, then that's a plus for me.

To be fair, the ancient Greeks fucked anyone and everyone regardless of sexuality. That wasn't so much for wokeness as it was just being accurate.

I personally love the game and have done too many runs at this point but I'll agree that the ending is very anti climactic. Granted, the plot is fairly straightforward, but still. Demeter not playing a larger role was a wasted opportunity.
