Games you wanted to love that you just couldn't? - Or even wound up hating

Resonance of Fate, I really liked the art, and steam punk style of the game and the story was actually pretty interesting at least compared to the average JRPG, but the combat was so fucking awful. I've tried to finish it three or four times now and I never can.

Celeste is an decent platformer but any time the tumblr story started with the squeaky Animal Crossing voices made my skin crawl in irritation. Just the most tumblr platitude-kindness morals. There's a panic attack minigame. The only good character was the evil ghost girl telling the main character to shut the fuck up.

Also Celeste sounds like a stripper not a badass mountain.

A great irony with Celeste is that, despite being Tumblriffic, the Japanese translation accidentally used a very offensive word in one scene. It's brought up, and discussed in the comments of this article: https://legendsoflocalization.com/common-problems-when-translating-games-into-japanese/

This interesting article covers the word: http://avery.morrow.name/blog/2012/04/things-you-cant-say-on-japanese-television/
Kichigai, 気違い “crazy” One of the most offensive words in Japan, despite its ubiquitous use in American English. Other words like “schizophrenic” are also banned.
Though I don't know for sure if it's on par with the N-word, or just some word that makes Japanese Tumblrinas shriek.

I'm apparently some kind of anti-fan of Hitman because I loved Absolution, but couldn't enjoy Blood Money at all. It's way too clunky, and I loved how much more streamlined Absolution was. Same goes for the earlier games, they're just flat-out too difficult and clunky for me.

The God Eater games.

Aesthetics are great, story is good, and it tries so hard to be interesting as a setting.

It's just the combat feels awkward as hell and it's clearly not designed to be as fair on single players as it really should be.

I enjoyed Absolution when I played it within my rules. I didn't get why I would score higher for picking up more items and more disguises? I thought I would have been given a much stronger score if I adopted a minimalist playstyle that almost always guarantees a Silent Assassin ranking.

Yeah the earlier games were brutal. Slow sneaking speed, limited saves and AI that gets on your ass if you simply run. Contracts onwards makes some positive improvements but the first two were hard as shit. I was only able to beat them because I massacred my way through the shitty levels like Japan and Afghanistan.

I wanted to love it so hard, but the game is just mediocre. Which is frustrating, because every other aspect is out-fucking-standing.
The animation and art style is loyal to the anime, the VA is on point, the music is great and the story is bretty gud, but the GAME part of the videoGAME is terrible. It woulda been so much better as a VN.

Civilisation VI. I'm a huge fan of the series, but I HATED Civ6, even though I wanted so much to love it.

Compared to the other games I couldn't get immersed or at any point feel that I was running an empire. I was always very aware that I was interacting with a video game, in fact it felt more like an over-complex board game. There's dozens of game mechanics that bear no resemblance to anything any historical empire ever did or otherwise have no real-life analogue - they're just game mechanics for you to interact with. Has any country or empire ever decided to concrete over hundreds of square miles of land in order to only build religious buildings there for the next few centuries? No, but you have to do that in Civ6 if you want to build even the pokiest little temple.

And you have to build it. Civ6 railroads you into playing a certain way, hard. You have to have about 7 or 8 cities, any more and they rebel, any less and you don't have enough to specialise them - and you HAVE to specialise them. You have to have one military city, one religious city, one science city and so forth, otherwise it's not optimal and the game harshly punishes you, especially at higher difficulties where you have to stack those bonuses perfectly to compete with the cheating AI. You are forced into a generalist "little bit of everything" playstyle by the tech tree and the "dark age" mechanic, where you have to meet arbitrary goals in order not to have your progress artificially hampered by the game. As an early game example, you have to build two triremes, or Astronomy costs 40% more research (it's framed as a "bonus" but in effect it's a penalty). Only need one trireme? Landlocked country? Fuck you, build two anyway and immediately scrap them in order to metagame. There's one of these penalty mechanics for every tech in the game. You will be metagaming constantly. You're not fighting the other civs, you're fighting the rules.

This of course makes all the Civs feel the same to play, except the Aztecs who are ludicrously overpowered. And they ripped out half the Civs to sell back to you as DLC. Fuck that. You can't specialise, you can't roleplay, you have to play the game the way the game wants you to play, and every game feels the same. In Civ5 (and in fact all the other games) you could go into a game thinking "I'll be a miltaristic theocracy" or "I'll be peaceful and rich" or "I'll be a huge sprawling machiavellian trade empire" but in Civ6 you can't do that, you'll lose all your bonuses.

Fuck Civ6.

The World Ends With You. Back on the DS, with all the rave reviews I thought I check it out. Played 1 hour and dropped it. Maybe in the future I will go back to it. But at the time, I didn't like the combat.
I said the same thing but then I played the iOS port and I loved it.

Gave the DS Version a try again and I still liked it, but I prefer the iOS controls

which is the only time I ever preferred an iOS version of a game

Dishonored 2 really irked me not only was the plot sub par compared to the first but I wasn't even speedrunning and I beat it in a little over four hours. That's fucking insulting for $60, there are rpgmaker hentai games with more content than that.

I'm back with another one: 2017's Prey.

In some ways, I really do like it; the foley (because I'm re.tarded and I really enjoy sound effects in games), like Dishonored, was really good, it looked good, it had an interesting (but not entirely unique or original) story and it reminded me a lot of Bioshock IN SPAAAACE!!!! and it's always nice to just play a game and learn about what happened building up to the point you're at. It also had great music.

But I just couldn't love it. I'm not even sure why. It could've been that the game felt sluggish and like I was being moved forward by an automatic path. Maybe it's because even the normal difficulty felt... hard when there were enemies much tougher than me in areas I was supposed to search through. Maybe it was the "damned if you do, damned if you don't" style of upgrades and the random drop of useful tools. MAYBE it had something to do with how there never seemed to be enough suit repair kits. Maybe I'm just bad at the game.

Also it might just be me and I don't really have a problem with Alex as a character but jesus I hated his voice.

I don't know if anyone here mention NecroVision yet. But I'm going to say that it pulls a HoneyPot: It pulls you in with some dumb but fun combat, then gives you a literal god tier weapon at the halfway point. But then the game becomes annoying with spawning a ton of either:

A). Really fast zombies

Or

B). A ton of different hell-like enemies

Or both of them at once.

It's fun, but I would only play through it once. Just for the Texas VA ham.

The series is perfectly fine for a Mario RPG, the humor is great, the style is beautiful but God are there too much button commands for the Bros.

The original Crash Bandicoot Trilogy. Ridiculous difficulty spikes and repetitive level design really put me off.

Undertale. I got bored of it very quickly. Felt very dull and lifeless to me.

Harvest Moon Friends of Mineral Town. It is one of the sacred cows of the series and yet it was a huge letdown for me. I did not find the characters deep or interesting at all like everyone says they are. The simple gameplay is relaxing but after awhile I start craving the more "grindy" aspects of the newer games. The mines bored me to tears and makes the mining nodes in the newer games look fun by comparison. Even rival marriages felt hollow. It's not a bad game it's just nothing stood out or impressed me. Maybe it's nostalgia that makes people hold it in high regard.
Not to mention classic HM nostalgiafags are obnoxious as hell. I lost count at the number of times someone would sperg on and on about the "charm" and "magic" of the older games. It gets tiresome and almost turns me off from trying other classic HM titles.

Metroid Fusion, what a disappointment that was. Stiff controls, linear, and the graphics, oh the graphics, they had that early 2000's cell phone look to them. Just look at this shit, the edges of Samus is all fucked up like if someone didn't alpha key it correctly:

More images in the spoiler.
It has that crappy "digitized drawing" look. And dithering, lots and lots of dithering that comes across as noise more than anything else, just like on a color screen Ericsson of that era.
687905

Designs certainly had more detail, but this Ridley belongs on a sticker on the bottom of a skateboard, not in a Metroid game.

Compare it with the Super Metroid Ridley:
687910

Or the Zero Mission Ridley, a game released on the same system as Fusion:
687913

This guy is another skateboard sticker:

But it was the stiff movement and linearity that really made the game trash.

Persona series in general especially 3 & 4. I wanted to like it based on the glowing reviews and great things I hear but they bore me to death. Repetitive dungeons and Story too dramatic for my taste with characters I don't really care about all that much. Persona 4 in particular, I tried to keep playing and I found it irritating to slog through.

That game was programmed with the engine of Wario Land 4. That was my first Metroid game so I grew to enjoy it. This is coming from someone who got bored with Metriod Prime.

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. I got it during a time when I was flat fucking broke so a new game promising a lot of content was what I was banking on. Fuuuuucking Christ, what an Acme of everything wrong with JRPGs. Hyper girly worthless female deuteragonist, cookie-cutter protagonist with a """meaningful""" name ("Fayt", god Almighty), combat AI was completely bonkers and holy shit the Twist 4/5ths of the way through the story...

After how weird and different Valkyrie Profile* was I was so ready to give tri-Ace another go and that turd put me off of games entirely for almost a month. I grinned and ate shit for hours to force my way through it because I had literally nothing else to do with my free time and by the end it was just agony.

(*Valkyrie Profile 2 was, coincidentally, what brought me back to them initially and then killed my interest in them altogether. Fuck that game.)

EDIT: read through the whole thread. I feel so vindicated in my hatred. I am born anew.
