This isn't the first article about the incident. I wouldn't even say it's the first one by a prominent blog. As far as I can tell the story still hasn't been picked up by any more traditional media.

But the other ones I read, the people knew who he was. This one doesn't go "Chris Chan, creator of Sonichu, notorious internet sensation" etc. It's "A guy maced a Gamestop employee over Sonic's arms."

It's easy to miss, but the thing is, he didn't actually assault the guy over Sonics arms; in fact, he didn't actually assault the guy over anything other that the fact that Chris is a spiteful asshole.
Chris had only recently got the pepper spray, so it's a a safe bet that it was gonna get used during his next altercation, regardless of where it took place.

This has nothing to do with gamers, though. I hate how people are associating this situation with gaming (fuck, even Gamergate, of all things), because to be perfectly honest, it doesn't.
It's just Chris being his usual, autistic self. He said that Sonic's new design gave him sensory issues. It's not that he's angry at the game. He's angry at SONIC'S BLUE ARMS.

My personal favourite misunderstanding is the designtrend article, they seem to think the cwcki is Chris's website, when that couldn't be further from the truth
Agree with the stupid assumptions, they clearly found the wiki to link to it, why not spend a few minutes getting the facts straight from there? I would have thought even the shittiest e-journalist would kill for an entire wiki dedicated to the topic they're writing about
