I thought half masks are only good for respiratory hazard stuff, like when you are working with aerosolized paint or other particulate lung irritant.

The tear gas gets in the eyes, that seems to be the trouble.

Yeah, but they are super cheap, CBRN respirators are very expensive in comparison.

Edit: anyway, if you have swimming goggles, use those. Most modern CBRN respirators have anti-fogging features though, so you might be able to see better.

I've always been a bit grossed out by the gas masks at the army surplus shops because I assume they smell really bad, what with the rubber and chemicals deteriorating from decades of improper storage in a Soviet or Chinese warehouse somewhere.
