So this popped up in a discussion I was having last night. And it is magical. At first I was legitimately worried, "Oh god, did someone actually make a headcanon fanfic of how they perceive reality in visual novel form...?", but then I read some of the discussions and the dev's, Dank Boi's, comments.

This is bait at its finest in my opinion, and I hope this actually gets approved on Steam. There's already serious responses such as this one, but it seems the most vocal are the ones that get this is satire. Still, can't wait for the responses this will inevitably get once more people find out about it.

Yeah, this has to be a parody. From the MS Paint titlecard to the generic anime aesthetic it seems like just another one of the bargain-bin VN games littering Steam. The publisher being called Dank Boi Games also doesn't help push any legitimacy on the title. Hell, it was probably made in Ren'Py in like half an hour.

This reminds me of a visual novel that a friend of mine "voice acted" in. I don't remember the name of it and it was pretty fucking terrible from what I can remember, but something about games like this, even in parody, will always baseline be funny enough to warrant a few hours of entertainment.

hello dank boi here, developer of gay nation. i found this friendly forum page through a google search for gay nation. you all seem like a nice bunch of people so here i am.

gay nation has been banned from steam, itch.io, and all other publishers. article postings have been banned on reddit. is dank boi the most oppressed game developer in the world?? maybe. indeed, straights and gays are equally triggered by gay nation. it was the perfect troll. too perfect.

at the time of banning on steam it had 10,000 wishlists so u could say i lost some money... dashing my dreams of retiring early and fucking off to a remote tropical island. over 700 hours of labor have gone into gay nation and "the powers that be" will ensure that dank boi games is perpetually censored on all platforms, so fuck it.

if any of you kind folk would like a free copy of GAY NATION send me a message and i will hook you up.

This is actually something I really wanted to do, but we received a lifetime ban on our steam developer account... Alongside the theft of the $300 in publishing fees we paid - for games they never published. Funny how that works. Also included in that lifetime ban is a sort of "association ban", where anybody tangentially related to a banned developer also gets banned. Of course they won't ban you preemptively, they'll only ban you after you've paid your fee, which you'll never see back. Real nice company.

And even if I did manage to sneak it onto Steam through a totally unrelated person's account... Allow me to introduce you to the judge jury and executioner of Steam. Meet Valve's product release manager, Jason Ruymen:

Anyway the common thread between all of the censorship you see on Steam these past few years is this guy. Google his name and you'll find it associated with every major censor of the past two years. It's top down bullshit and he personally involves himself in all of it.

GAY NATION would never be able sneak by this bloodhound. Even if it did, it would be met with a swift ban upon discovery. So unfortunately, any attempt at getting back on steam would just result in them stealing even more money from me, and fuck that.

Anyway Steam is shit and you should stop giving them your money. Current year video games are all trash anyway.

No. I was told that they only take 'serious' games because the Chinese bigbrains over at Epic do not understand the concepts of satire and stylistic suck. In a purely hypothetical scenario where GAY NATION makes onto their platform, whoever approved it would surely have their social credit score eviscerated. It will never happen for that reason alone.

I'm sorry that this happened to you. I wish that there weren't so many humorless cunts in the world. Even if it was offensive, all you have to do is NOT PLAY THE GAME if it triggers you. I bought a silly game about Feminazis that was a obvious troll but that wasn't banned so I don't understand why you got smashed by the hammer. It would be nice if there were a distributor that didn't give a crap about the content.

Anyway, I hope that this doesn't discourage you from producing any of the crazy shit that pops into your head because there are always people around who appreciate this kind of stuff.

Steam is the effectively the only platform for PC games there is. It's no different than the stranglehold Google has over search. Sure there are alternatives, but nobody uses them so they might as well not exist. People don't even buy PC games if they're not available on Steam. They've monopolized the market.

To give you an idea, during a single week just being passively listed on Steam in the pre-release state, the game got more visibility than months of active promotion on other platforms. If you, as a developer, are not able to publish your game on Steam, it will be a failure. Period. Steam is ultimately in control of your fate. Being deplatformed by Steam is a much, much bigger problem than people realize.

The only types of games that have really managed to thrive outside of Steam are those of the pornographic type, because Steam did not allow them. But, now that Steam is accepting of those, expect the same thing to happen in that genre as well. There are exceptions to this, but as they say, the exception proves the rule.

Anyway, making future games is not at all viable, for the reasons listed above. The limited amount of people who have played GAY NATION like it, however, it will never get enough visibility to be considered a success.
