They are not inherently ugly.
Various disconnected pictures all over your body is ugly and trashy sure, but an entire body of uniformly designed tattoo can be very attractive.

Tattoos in reality are however a red flag.
They should not be bought but earned for them to have any real purpose.
Some of my fictional characters have tattoos for magical reasons and that makes them very divine. In the modern world they're nothing like that though, they're just for vanity. Any real "meaning" your tattoos have is just vain bullshit that you tell yourself to appear deeper.
This just proves that fiction is superior to reality.
