Genshin Impact is an RPG gacha developed and released by MiHoYo for PC, PS4 and mobile in September of 2020, later being released on the PS5 in April of 2021, with a planned Nintendo Switch port in the works. In this time, a thriving community of people has blossomed up around the game. When they aren't bemoaning how racist it is and complaining about pedophilia, they're tweeting out their pixel waifu and husbando pulls, creating wonderful and creative headcanons about the characters and attacking people for shipping the main self-insert character with... literally anyone. Funny shit is rampant in this fandom, as is expected with a game that is many people's baby's first gacha.

Around April 6th, 2021, Genshin fans got antsy. They wanted new content, and they wanted it NOW. What better way to get a chinese company to listen to your pleas for more pixel to consoom than to list out all sorts of "problematic" aspects of a gacha game and get a hashtag trending? #BoycottGenshin came about because a few fans were upset that Inazuma, a new region in the game, wasn't coming out fast enough for them. Being the terminally online spuds they are, they had already completed everything released of the game and wanted more NOW NOW NOW. As comes with being terminally online, these people listed out all the things they didn't like about the game on twitter, getting the hashtag #BoycottGenshin rolling. Of course, don't think about the fact that these people had sunk countless hours and dollars into the game without being bothered by said problematic aspects in the past. What better way to get a Chinese company to comply with your demands than to spam the fuck out of them on their tweets?

Aside from spamming the twitter of a game that literally doesn't care and is rolling in money, they tweeted out all of the supposed flaws of their favorite money drain.

Racism
The supposed racism they were upset about comes from the Genshin Impact devs basing the mob idle animation on indigenous dance videos, not making Xinyan or Kaeya black enough, and describing the two as "scary/fierce" and "exotic" respectively. Nevermind the fact that Xinyan is described as scary because she's literally a punk and Kaeya is described as exotic because he's just not native to the region the story takes place in.

The complaining about Kaeya's description actually got them somewhere, because Mihoyo actually did end up changing his description, at least in the english translation.

Kaeya and Xinyan are also the two dark-skinned characters that fans love to complain aren't dark enough for a game currently only having regions based on Germany (Mondstadt) and China (Liyue).

Pedophilia
The pedophilia accusations also come in two parts, one being that the child models in game are actually called loli, and one where the devs forgot to edit out a romantic line in regards to a NPC that in the beta was an adult, and was later changed to a child.
Screenshot - 2021-07-19T114649.575.png
These are the child characters, and as you might have guessed yes there is a portion of the fandom who loves sexualizing them.

The genshin community on twitter loves doing giveaways for packs of those sweet sweet primogems, and in the heat of #BoycottGenshin many people deleted/cancelled their giveaways, vowing to never give money to such an evil company again. As you can expect, 24 hours passed and everyone seemed to have forgotten their angers, going back to entering and hosting giveaways.

The funniest part about the #BoycottGenshin debacle is that people rightly pointed out that in order to boycott something, you had to stop consuming the product. Of course the people complaining didn't want to stop playing their vidya, so they quickly changed the hashtag to #DoBetterMihoyo, in hopes of getting their attention that way, so that they didn't have to stop playing the game themselves.

Worth noting that the banner that came directly after the #BoycottGenshin thing, Childe, did have a significant decrease in revenue earned compared to the Venti rerun, although it's most likely because Childe and Zhongli were directly after Venti, who is widely agreed upon to be one of the best characters in-game, and not because of any hashtag that came about. This chart does not include the Klee rerun or the Kazuha run, which at the time of writing this are the two most recent banners, and based on my educated guess I'm going to say the Klee rerun earned just as much if not more than the Venti rerun.

Minor Coded
Or the ever-asked question, "How fucking old are they?"
Screenshot - 2021-07-19T144627.521.png
Screenshot - 2021-07-19T145336.512.png
Genshin Impact does this funny thing where they refuse to verify the ages of any of the characters. As you can imagine, this leads to many, many twitter slapfights rehashing the exact same thing over and over again, especially given the fact that most of the characters look exactly the fucking same, age-wise, aside from the characters that use the child models. For the most part, fans have a general idea about how old characters are based on context clues, but there are a few characters that fans just cannot come to an agreement on their age (read: if they're allowed to be sexualized/shipped with certain other characters or not). These characters are the travelers (the self-insert main character, Aether and Lumine, who are canonically over hundreds of years old but is also kids because... reasons.) and Venti (the god of Mondstadt, basically, who is thousands of years old and also still for some reason a kid because he took over the body of his friend when he died or something like that idk). These are the main three who are hotly debated in the fandom, but that doesn't stop OTHER characters from getting the same treatment! This argument is perpetual in this fandom, and you can find shit being said on twitter about certain characters being minor coded every single day. Just look up "[character name] minor" and you're good to find a few new slapfights.

If everyone is minor coded is anyone minor coded?

Shipping
Screenshot - 2021-07-19T102902.257.png
While shipping ties in pretty heavily with the age debate, there are certain ships in this fandom that cause constant slapfights, the most prominent being KaeLuc (Kaeya and Diluc), the ship between two childhood friends/sworn brothers, or "adoptive brothers" if you want to go the pseudo-incest route. I don't really give enough of a fuck about the ship itself to go into more details about it but the fighting over it is near-constant online, with those thinking it doesn't count as incest because they aren't blood related and met when they were around 10 and those who think it's incest because they lived together and "sworn brothers" has the word "brother" in it.

Screenshot - 2021-07-19T162756.860.png

Another one, not as hated but still pretty rage-inducing to these people, is the ship ChiLumi (Childe x Lumine) which is a man in his early 20s with the 300~ year old female main character, however it is hated due to that dang dirty minor coding that Lumine has, making the 20 year old a predator towards the 300 year old dimension traveler. How fun!

Thirst and Hornyposting

As with any fandom, thirst and hornyposting is rampant in the Genshin Impact community. I will let the screenshots speak for themselves.

The Genshin Impact fandom is full of potential, and it's the gift that keeps on giving. Every day there are new slapfights about the dumbest shit, there's virtue signaling galore, and most of these people drop tons on getting their favorite waifus and husbandos. There's a new banner coming pretty soon, so twitter's gonna be full of the usual "Don't give money to mihoyo!" tweets with the same person tweeting out their pulls a few hours later. I hope you guys find this fandom as entertaining as I do.

And from a gaming YouTuber (forgot their name) it's game play is one of the most insidious.
I tried it once, for like a half hour and then never touched it again. I hear people compare this to Zelda Breath Of The Wild, which I've never played.

The beginning missions you're forced to either solo with party members you've just met, akin to a "tutorial" regarding how to use the character, or have them leeched onto you because you NEED them to get past certain areas because of fucking course they all are divided by elements (wind, water, fire, etc...). So the freedom to actually customize your team is thrown right out the fucking window. Not to mention you're locked from doing certain things until you reach a certain level, which in itself is like pulling teeth, so the exploration part is a bit hampered.

literally it's only redeeming quality is the waifus, and all you have to do is browse the Genshin Impact page on places like QooApp to see how much people gush over them, especially the loli/jailbait witch because "dat ass".

It is very similar to breath of the wild, but if you mention that to most fans they’ll seethe and come back with “No no no it’s different because the fighting is different and you get to play as different characters!” or some other asinine reasoning that doesn’t refute what you said.

A lot of the stuff involving leakers has been pretty entertaining for this. There are a lot of people who just guess release schedules and call it a leak on twitter, people who will drip feed upcoming characters and content and then get mad at others who go all out, and the official twitter basically telling the tranny leakers to eat shit by just unveiling everything that leakers had started to tease people with. Some of the VA's are also insane, like the lady who voices Paimon the mascot character constantly tried to push her as a non-binary character because Paimon isn't usually addressed by pronouns and rather just her name. I think they got banned after getting into a bunch of twitter fights.

Call me crazy, but I feel that if you’re ever this concerned about whether a fictional character is canonically over the legal age of consent, you really need to step back and take a long, hard look at your life.

Genshin Impact is one of the reasons as to why gacha games on mobile get a bad rep, not just because it’s made in and for China. The controversy surrounding it is that it’s player base is mainly people that love the art types surrounding the game, but don’t understand the mechanics as to how the games are played.

I can't front, I played this game for 2-3 weeks when it first came out and absolutely noticed everyone was white and enjoyed that aspect of it. Good job, chinese company. Then I quit because I realized it was going to be the literal exact same thing over and over again, with the enemy level's increasing just enough, so I figured I had seen all there was to see and quit. The "Gacha" aspects didn't bug me too much because I'm not good enough of a gamer to have noticed whatever new weapons/characters would've granted me and just played as the MC Traveler boy 99% of the time anyway. I didn't notice the underage characters beyond Paimon, but I guess that's because the free characters they give you are mostly at least teen-looking, and the few I did need to play in "Trials" weren't that bad either. I look forward to reading about the community because everytime I got a request for someone to join my game I just denied it since I really had no idea wtf I was doing other than running around and clicking on monsters.
