What do you guys think of this new summer event?

My thoughts: I think it's pretty unique. The boating minigame is pretty cool and the shop items are very good as well. It'll be a fun time waster this summer.
The rewards are improved. A weapon billet from it is very cool considering they are rare and random af. Waiting for the badminton/squash mini-game.

First day was boring aside from the cutscenes but I have decently high hopes for the rest of it

It doesn't help that billet drops are fucked as hell. I'm starting to see them occasionally from the max level boss domains, but I have like 4 sword billets and not a single bow one. Though the EM buff might make the EM 4 star sword a far better fit for Keqing than Black Sword (which annoyingly I already leveled)

The drop rates in general are an actual scam. I’d be totally fine if they swapped Billets in for something on the Battle Pass - some of the craftable weapons work well enough fir most characters, but refining them is an absolute nightmare...

For me, it is Claymore billets. Got copies of everything else, still limited. Compared to coin flips and perfect artifact rolls, that MF claymore billet is the true blue moon. Never seen it drop for half a year, at least.

Mhy's justification for this can be seen reasonable in a way, that billet weapons are endgame weapons for certain characters (White blind for Noelle, Iron Sting for Kekqueen?) I like to think they are reconsidering their stance on it, as shown by the current event rewards.

I haven't quite looked over the math yet, but if you've already gotten a bunch of crit rate/damage artifacts for Keqing you're possibly better off just sticking with your crit build than switching over to an EM build (though that does also depend on your playstyle). I've given Keqing a Blackcliff Longsword and she tends to wreck just about everything that's not both physical and electro immune.

Well. I decided to give this thing a shot. What the hell, the Chinese Communist Party pandered to me with pretty anime men.

It's comical how much is stolen from Breath of the Wild. For that reason I refuse to give them money but want to give the game a fair shake. How doable is a 100% no money spent on gacha run?

They’ve been fairly generous with Primogems, though those do start to slow down late game. Least they were smart a few patches back and made it so you’d get Wish items just by levelling your characters.

Between Pity and the rate we get Gems, the games fairly ftp friendly, just be ready for the inevitable power creep (meta is bullshit in a PvE game anyway)

most crafted are outclassed by their BP version, depending on your stance you could argue that they want you to buy the BP instead (personally I think it's just a matter of gear progression, and the crafted stuff is still fine for most if not all stuff).
also any of the DPS swords is apparently still better for noelle, even with the DEF scaling, but can't remember the math exactly or if it was dependent if you got c6 or not

gatcha works by catching more flies with honey, but stretched over time so you come back every day. the only difference paying in genshin makes is the amount and level of chars/gears you potentially can get, which makes certain parts (retardedly) easier but isn't really required. if you spend your free gatchacoins (primogems) conscientiously, as in knowing when to roll on what and how much, you already can get pretty far.
if you just want to follow the story, afterwards grind a bit every day and do events free is more than enough.

Genshin is extremely f2p friendly. You can beat the hardest endgame content with nothing but 4* characters and equipment (if you even choose to play abyss, which is totally optional and you might not even want to). And you will inevitably get your hands on some 5-stars whether you spend money or not.
The free weapon (Dodoco Tales) that they're giving out with this event is pretty good for a freebie, I think you have at least 3 weeks to get it (might be longer not sure). So you have time to catch up enough to get to said event (from a fresh account I think you have to do quite a handful of character/story quests but it shouldnt take you that long)
Just make sure to always be emptying your resin out before logging out + never spend primogems on the standard banner

The BP weapons have some pretty high tier abilities (the black sword has starting 20% damage boost to everything beside burst, while Iron Sting has max 18% damage at full ascension with an added condition to start it) and crit chance/damage are valuable to themselves due to the rarity of it (you are limited to a single artifact and side effects). At least for me it seems like Billet weapons are designed to be baby's first four star and only decent if you can grind them (which you can't until max world level) while BP you can slap into every dps char and it will be at least decent.

As for Genshin being f2p friendly. I'd say that it's friendly as a subscription game like WOW was back at the day. Buying the daily primogems can allow you to feasibility get event five stars without a dropping shitloads of money. I can't find myself getting far without any five stars due to how the enemies defence and hp beefs up around world level 3. But I also didn't need to whore out to reach end game. Really the only reason to waste a lot of money is cooming or number autism.

It's quite doable with the cycling events giving you decent income that you can save for when a banner roles around that grabs your interest. Improving characters and increasing your Adventure Rank by doing things gives you more rolls at the gacha, which again, you should save up. That said, the gacha is disappointing in that you either get something useful (character or 4-star weapon that's potenially useful) or literal vendor trash/weapon fodder.

That said, really shouldn't be expecting to get high constellations on rarer characters as that gets stupidly expensively very quickly, and all microtransaction options are either complete ripoffs or rather subpar when compared to the Welkin Moon. Having all payment options be rather trash kinda encourages the F2P mindset.

The BattlePass is designed pretty well if you end up maxing it out. I actually broke down and got it once cause I had ended up maxing it through normal play, saw the rewards and how much time/effort it would save, and just went fuck it.

Yeah I stand behind Welkin and BP, they are fairly priced.
Crystal top-ups are when the game goes full typical gacha game jewwery

Should had reworded from "endgame weapons to certain characters" to "preferable weapons for certain builds".

Can't argue about serpent spine on Noelle. Not requiring R5 for SS to do great DPS is the cherry on top.

I like the islands and the different quests there. The monthly activities are really the most fun when it's exploring and fighting in a unique environment, rather than some minigame to grind. Kinda grim how the new questline promotes the Jean when gameplay wise she'll fucking drown every hillicurl she goes against.

Also I don't get how it's a story mission despite being time limited.
