Geoff Keighley "AKA Dorito pope" will not host E3 2020 -

"Given what has been communicated about E3 so far, I just don't feel comfortable participating this year," the Game Awards creator and host of E3 Coliseum tells THR.
Geoff Keighley, the creator and host of The Game Awards, will skip this year's E3 convention in Los Angeles.

"Given what has been communicated about E3 so far, I just don't feel comfortable participating this year," Keighley tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Keighley has hosted the E3 Coliseum event, a live-streamed show that welcomes developers and various Hollywood stars onstage near the L.A. Convention Center throughout the run of the convention, for the past three years. He declined the offer to produce this year's planned E3 Coliseum.

Last month, following the announcement that Sony would skip the annual video game convention for the second year in a row, the Entertainment Software Association, which organizes E3, released a statement about this year's upcoming event: "E3 2020 will be an exciting, high-energy show featuring new experiences, partners, exhibitor spaces, activations, and programming that will entertain new and veteran attendees alike."

The ESA and E3 have come under fire recently for leaking the personal information of thousands of media attendees and, Wednesday morning, the official E3 2020 website was leaked, showcasing what developers would be in attendance at this year's show (Activision, Ubisoft and Bethesda among them).

"For the past 25 years, I have attended every Electronic Entertainment Expo," says Keighley. "Covering, hosting, and sharing E3 has been a highlight of my year, not to mention a defining part of my career. I've debated what to say about E3 2020. While I want to support the developers who will showcase their work, I also need to be open and honest with you, the fans, about precisely what to expect from me."

E3 has undergone a number of changes over the past few years, including selling public tickets to the convention in 2017 for the first time. Originally launched in 1995, E3 has grown into one of the world's largest video game conventions (last year's event welcomed more than 66,000 attendees, down slightly from 2018's 69,000) and has traditionally been a platform for studios, developers and publishers to debut first looks at their upcoming titles.

He probably should have said the truth, which would be "Fuck E3 - I'm making giant stacks with my own yearly video game show and they can eat my ass."

Actually Geoff is the most honorable and ethical paid shill in this industry. I know where Geoff is coming from every time he talks. Other access journalists in this industry pretend like they're not just an extension of a marketing PR engine. Geoff leans into it and it enables him to create a unique content (the VGAs) and have interviews with top level executives that would otherwise never reach the public. Geoff does push and prod during these interviews, knowing exactly where the line is while keeping things comfortable for the execs. Geoff is the last professional in games media.

I cannot hate Geoff despite my best efforts due to the persistent roasting he received from Joel Mchale during Geoff's shitty 2013 game awards.

It's been a long time since E3 was as exciting as it used to be.

Remember how cool it was in the early 2000s? I'd still give my left nut to attend it circa 2002 or 2003.

But today it seems to be pretty much on its last legs.

Yeah, Geoff is an ok dude, I've liked him ever since I used to watch him on G4 back in the 2000s.

E3 is one foot in the grave. Give it a few more years and it will be dead, either literally or figuratively. No one believes any of the things they show off, you get better info from things like Nintendo Direct or PSX. It might continue as this mastabatory journalist expo, but no one who actually plays game will end up tuning in.

I agree - always a time to repost one of his best two-handed jams.

He's willing to work with companies but there are times he's shown he isn't going to 100% be a doormat, which puts him a full head and shoulders over the entire industry.

So here's the E3 2020 Death March thus far
1) Sony has already said they're not showing up, realizing they could essentially rent out their own amphitheater and have a two hour circlejerk anytime they want.
2) E3 2020 has already been confirmed to be a reformat of the conference, putting a heavier focus on "influencers" in feeble effort to seem relevant.
3) Whoever runs the ESA's website is either a fucking idiot or a master class troll considering they doxxed hundreds of game journos last year.
4) ...and now the Dorito Pope has cast his gaze away.

It's kind of sad when you realize the true highlights of E3-2020 are more than likely going to be M$ being king of the hill purely by default, Bethesda setting fire to the last remnants of credibility they have in front of a paid audience, Ubisoft's continued efforts to hype up the same old oatmeal, and Devolver yearly reminder of "this is stupid, you're stupid, everything is stupid, buy the two games we might release this year."

I know Nintendo is enjoying this strategy with their Direct successes. On the flip side of this coin though, part of the success of E3 is showing up amidst the other publishers and studios, showing off your shit, and stealing the other guy's thunder. It's risky, because their reveals could push your shit in as well. It's never been life-and-death, but after 25 years of the same show it's becoming clearer that companies are enjoying the current internet and being able to direct market to their current and intended audiences without putting on elaborate stage shows.

I bet its because of the data leak. I am glad someone is standing up for his personal security, even if games "journalists" getting doxed was hilarious.
I don't think it's that, I hope it's not that.

I thinking it's more along the lines that Geoff is being asked to put on a lame show where he doesn't even talk to devs or something.

It's one of those rare instances where Nintendo turned out to be well ahead of the game. I doubt they actually predicted E3's inevitable demise per se, but it's clear that their Direct format will be the future for gaming news dumps in general moving forward (indeed, Sony's already copied them on that front beat for beat).
