To be fair that's not really a sequel, it's more starting from scratch again. I don't blame them for refusing to give up on the property. When it comes to its film division Sony is being left behind, I'd be surprised if they gave up on the Ghostbusters brand completely.

Pretty much this. They have to puff up their chest, pretend to be a hundred percent confident in their project and secretly planning to shove Paul Feig into a locker for creating this mess.

And Sony's lack of confidence in the project was notable from the first day the trailer was out.
Why else should they try to sucker in viewers by discrediting naysayers as misogynists? The whole debacle about the trailer reeks of executives pissing their pants over a failed project and trying to somehow deflect the issue.

A ghostbusters remake with Chris Pratt and Channing Tatum with the guys from 21 jump street writing/directing would hand turned this into an actual franchise with sequels that makes a shit ton of cash

I think a couple of people have suggested ways of doing it in these threads, some of them even involving all female Ghostbusters.

Instead of this dumb idea of just rebooting it entirely, make it an actual sequel. You have a justifiable reason to have some continuity and bring back the original actors as the actual characters they were in the first movie, and for that matter, bring back some of the fantastic extras and minor characters, like William Atherton as Walter Peck. He could actually be an enthusiastic supporter of the Ghostbusters by now and be opposed to some prick who is just like he was in the original.

The original Ghostbusters have retired by now, and they have handed the franchise over to their successors, who JUST HAPPEN TO ALL BE WOMEN. And this is no big deal and nobody notices it as anything unusual, they're just the obvious candidates for the job because of their personal merits.

You have the original actors show up from time to time, maybe Bill Murray shows up and gives some Yoda-tier advice, and bust some fucking ghosts.

What you don't do is pointlessly insult your target audience for no reason with no possible benefit.

Why is this so hard?

Harold Ramis the original Egon is dead. He has been dead for 2 years now.

The original cast refuses to do a sequel without him - Bill Murray wasn't enthusiastic about doing it with him. He was one of the original writers and creators of the series - Dan Aykroyd being the other. There never was going to be a sequel without him. After a number of failed attempts by Ramis and Aykroyd followed by Ramis's death; a reboot was always the only option except letting the series lie dead for longer.

It is hard, because we have yet to develop technology to revive the dead. Tumblr did not direct this movie - people who wanted to create a new spin on the franchise who lack imagination did. Intellectual staleness from eager investors created this, not tumblr.

Remember Oscar, the baby from the second Movie? Have him be a Ghostbuster (or somehow affiliated with the Ghostbuster's business) - it would be a nice little touch. Have a little Cameo of Sigourney Weaver while we're at it.

Sony's "PR strategy" pretty transparently consisted of people waving dollar bills in the faces of reviewers and roping people into making it a political statement to rate this garbage higher than it deserved.

No, a reboot is by no means "the only option". They could make a direct sequel a hundred years from now. All they need to do is to stay within the already established continuity - they wouldn't even need the old actors or a standin for that.

This is actually what I thought they were doing when I heard that a new Ghostbusters was in production. A new generation of Ghostbusters over 30 years after the events of the first movie. A shame they didn't go that route.

Incidentally I don't think they'll go through with an animated sequel either. Even cheap animation is pretty expensive if you want something better looking than a cheap flash game or Food Fight.
