European Commission Grants Five-Year License Renewal for Glyphosate
The approval of the Roundup ingredient follows an extensive debate amidst conflicting evidence over the health effects of the world’s most popular weed killer.

The European Commission voted yesterday (November 27) to approve a license renewal for glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsánto’s popular herbicide Roundup. European farmers will be able to use glyphosate for another five years.

The decision follows months of indecision among members of the Commission’s Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed about the extension, fueled by conflicting evidence over its potential effects on human and environmental health. The Commission had initially proposed a 10-year extension on glyphosate use, which was rejected by the majority of countries who voted. Eighteen countries voted in favor of a five-year renewal, overriding countries including France, Italy, and Austria, which opposed the decision over health concerns, according to Science.

Germany was among the countries that had voted in favor of the renewal, yet German Chancellor Angela Merkel evidently regretted the decision, according to Reuters. “This did not comply with the instructions worked out by the federal government,” Merkel said in a news conference yesterday. “I expect that such an incident will not be repeated,” she added. German Agriculture Minister Christian Schmidt said that he had not consulted with Merkel when ordering German officials to vote for the proposal, reports Politico.

The decision has been criticized by the Germany-based Glyphosate Task Force, which stated that the approval “categorically ignored scientific advice (and was) mainly influenced by public opinion and driven by politics,” according to Nature News.

Scientific evidence over whether glyphosate poses a cancer risk is equivocal. In 2015, the European Food Safety Authority had come to the conclusion in a study that glyphosate was “unlikely to pose a carcinogenic hazard to humans.” Earlier this month (November 9), a long-term study had found no conclusive link between exposure to the herbicide and cancer, as reported by Reuters. On the other hand, a 2016 WHO report deemed glyphosate to be “probably carcinogenic” to humans.

Correction (November 29): A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that a 2016 WHO report had concluded that glyphosate is “possibly carcinogenic” to humans. In fact, the report indicated that the chemical is “probably carcinogenic.” The Scientist regrets the error.

And here's the reaction on Facebook:

It's always better to be accused of being an enemy to the environment or of being a fascist than to trade away scientific integrity for emotional and mindless conspiracies.

The environmentalists have the same amount of intolerance, nuttery, and rage as any white supremacist clan.

Sounds like it made it in because politicians didn’t ask their bosses who to vote for.

Mildly off topic but for anybody who follows Anti-GMO/Private Villa of Corrupted Crops/Glyphosate lulz, I think you would get a kick out of this group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/GMOLOL/ . Think Kiwi Farms, if KF was solely devoted to laughing at anti-science autism and OPL was Food Babe.

Already a member. And I would have thought Mike Adams of Natural News would be OPL equivalent.

Anti-GMOs are a classic of conspiracy stupidity, always ready to produce the most dumb of opinions for us to laugh at. If there's something everyone should agree on, though, is that Monsánto isn't a friend. Monopoly kills the free market

Well it is good to have caution, but these people are so out there. I agree about Monsánto.

I do like to tell them that honey bees are non-native to the Americas and watch their heads explode.

Monopoly is also not good for quality control.

But yeah, this is something that farmers can buy, not something Monsato forces them to use. I always thought they should just keep the grass checked by goats, but with all the refugees coming in the goats may not be safe on the grassy fields anymore!

As much as I dislike Monsanto, it's hard to deny Roundup is a hell of a weed killer. Also, most weed killers are even more toxic. Why is it surprising it has some toxicity? It's literally a fucking poison, that's why it exists.

This. At the end of the day, Monsànto is basically another large corporation and like all large corporations they have skeletons in their closet. This doesn't mean they're engaged in a plot to take over the world and enslave humanity.

Environmentalists can have good points, but they're usually drowned out by the shrieking "Can I Speak To Your Manager" middle aged idiots who assume any chemical with more than three syllables in it is automatically hitlerite.

We eat sodium and chlorine every day in every meal. It's called table salt. Learn some chemistry or shut the hell up.
