Contrary to what you hear from Jim, there is still a decent amount of great fanart and art there but unfortunately much of it is swamped by trash.

Okay, obvious jokes aside, there are good artists, but the overwhelming majority of them are professional artists, be they freelancers or employees of a given company. Beyond that, it comes down to personal preference. Here's a link to one of my favorite galleries. If you've seen the Dark Souls concept art, the style should look familiar.
