We'll supply the Ukranians with scarves, glass beads and everything that colonial peoples like.
In the first place, you have obviously never once consulted the Table Talk in the German (Picker/Jochmann). The English translation has been denounced as unreliable, although the focus has been concentrated on the subject of religion, and for far too long.

In the Nov. 20, 1941 entry, the word handkerchief is misleading, the word here is actually Schneuztüchel, German for blanket. As for the entry you posted, in the German, he specifically refers to scarve coverings for the head (kopftücher) and necklaces consisting of glass beads (glassketten). That's why it's always important to be pedantic when studying the Table Talk.

I am not a partisan, either, of a university at Kiev. It's better not to teach them to read. They won't love us for tormenting them with schools. Even to give them a locomotive to drive would be a mistake.
This entry has been accurately translated.

Political corruption dies out for a lack of literacy. The Bolshevik revolution marked the decline of the Slavic culture. By depriving these territories of literacy, Hitler hoped that the lingering Bolshevik intelligentsia would eventually perish in and of itself, a time would come when they themselves would have ceased taking it seriously. The increased literacy in Europe not only salvaged the Catholic Church's existence, but resulted in hundreds of dissident Protestant sects, each clamoring to represent the one true faith at the expense of their competitors.

To teach the Russians, the Ukrainians and the Kirghiz to read and write will eventually be to our own disadvantage; education will give the more intelligent among them an opportunity to study history, to acquire an historical sense and hence to develop political ideas which cannot but be harmful to our interests. A loud-speaker should be installed in each village, to provide them with odd items of news and, above all, to afford distraction.
This translation is likewise accurate, though confined to Picker.

The system of education that obtains today is that of systematic cramming, especially in the subjects of history and religion, at the expense of political training. The average individual, a typical victim of the press, quickly forgets what he reads, being accustomed to fast digesting. He finds videos more informative and easier to take in. Meanwhile, students of laws (jurists, lawyers) are made into narrow-minded specialists and humanitarians who are incapable of distinguishing between cases deserving of leniency and cases deserving severe punishment.

It really is curious to think that these children will become Ukrainian adults, with their vulgar, inexpressive faces. (...) If these people are allowed, under German supervision — that is, under greatly improved conditions — to multiply too quickly, it will be against our interests for the racial pressures which these damned Ukrainians will exercise will constitute a real danger. Our interests demand just the reverse — namely, that these territories, hitherto Russian, should in time be populated by a larger number of German colonists than local inhabitants.
This is from Martin Bormann, not Hitler.

Jodl is quite right when he says that notices in the Ukrainian language "Beware of the Trains" are superfluous; what on earth does it matter if one or two more locals get run over by the trains?
I could not find this passage in the German, it's beyond my reach. The context sounds authentic, but it seems unlikely that Hitler would want his Slavic subjects to be so dumbed down that they couldn't even read signs, which were commonplace in the eastern territories under Soviet occupation. https://books.google.com/books?id=IWshAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA216&lpg=PA216&dq=roadway+signs

Whenever Hitler demonstrated his blatant disregard for what happened to the Jews in his writings, speeches, and conversations, he always counterbalanced his statement by appealing to the plight of the German people, even in private circles. He did not do so here. Does that mean he regarded Slavs as non-entities compared to the Jews? Then why all the fuss over his anti-Semitism when his attitude towards Slavs appears to be far worse?

On the other hand, in the Table Talk, Hitler suggested that Beethoven may have had Slavic blood and that this is where his inspiration stemmed from. This goes hand-in-hand with his assertion, made in a public speech, that the British never had a great composer like Beethoven. On at least two separate instances in Otto Wagener's memoirs, he conceded that the Russian-Slavic idea may have creative capacity, elsewhere indicating that Lenin's Slavic lineage (through Lenin's father) was a faint expression of the European will to civilization, which came in conflict with Lenin's Jewishness.

To exploit the Ukraine properly — that new Indian Empire — I need only peace in the West.
I'll grant that he may have called Ukraine the "European India", but neither Britain nor Rome were his chief inspiration for these ideas (so Hitler was neither imperialist/monarchist nor fascist). Hitler was attempting to revive the ancient Spartan state in the modern world.
Otto Strasser confirmed for me that Hitler's view of the "natural order" corresponds to a warrior caste ruling over helots, he specifically called the Third Reich "Spartan Germany". Hitler's writings and speeches are replete with references to Spartans and helots, including the Zweites Buch.

I would take care to read up on German insiders such as Sebastian Haffner, Otto Strasser, Heinrich Hoffmann (who, as pointed on here and elsewhere, was surprisingly very sober) and Ernst Hanfstaengl. Haffner in particular distinguished between fascists, Nazi adherents, and Nazi fanatics (as did Hitler himself). Most people who joined Hitler's movement either wanted to spread their own ideas (like Otto Strasser) or subvert it from the inside.

No I do not. That's a common myth not supported by modern studies. Males don't rapidly lose vitality as they age, as many people prefer to believe since it's another excuse to be lazy. Human males can sustain youthful levels of vitality well into old age, given proper nutrition and level of activity.
Glad to hear it.

Hitler had an eating disorder and his diet was extremely bad. Anyone who sustained his type of diet for the time he did would consequently be a wreck at his age.
How is vegetarianism/veganism bad?

Everyone attests to Hitler's pervasive digestion problems caused by his ridiculous diet.
Who is everyone? Name specific historians.

Not gonna reply to everything you wrote since I agree with most of the things and there's no point arguing about minor stuff. Thanks for the books/historians recommendations

Haffner in particular distinguished between fascists, Nazi adherents, and Nazi fanatics (as did Hitler himself). Most people who joined Hitler's movement either wanted to spread their own ideas (like Otto Strasser) or subvert it from the inside.

Heinz Höhne's Order of Death's Hand does great at exemplifying this in-depth, even if it's just about the SS not the Third Reich in general. People don't realize how diverse and pluralistic the national socialist movement was. From people who literally joined just so they could wear the cool looking uniforms to fanatics with religious belief in their personal branch of traditionalist neo-feudalism.

Who is everyone? Name specific historians.

Even explicitly pro-Hitler historians like Irving don't try to hide his health problems. What they do is try and hide the borderline pseudoscientific and more harm than good medical procedures used to "treat" Hitler's problems (it's hard to even imagine a doctor administering opioid painkiller for painful constipation because one of the most common side effects of opiates is precisely constipation - even a common junkie knows this, but somehow Morell wasn't aware). Mentions of Hitler's stomach problems are very prevalent, I recall them from reading biographies of insiders like the Luftwaffe adjutant von Below etc.

How is vegetarianism/veganism bad?

It would clog the thread and take too much time to list all the ways in which veganism is self-harm/starvation. It destroys the body on multiple levels, most immediately it damages the endocrine system. It is more destructive for male's hormonal hyposthasis than for female's so women can usually pull off being vegan with no obvious side effects (erectile dysfunction :smug:) for longer than men. If you know vegans in real life pay attention and you will see they often do drugs from marijuana to prescription pills because they need to artificially boost their mood, Hitler wasn't any different. Human body is extremely antifragile and can survive hardcore abuse for long time, but you cannot cheat biology and what doesn't kill you immediately will make you slowly decay. Some nutritients are called essential for a reason. Lack of creatine will eventually cause not only bodily weakness but also mental deficiency because creatine is necessary for ADP to ATP conversion in brain tissue, and therefore proper energy metabolism in the brain. Animal protein is a shitty source of protein and it will only make you bloated (like it did Hitler). Bioavailibility aside it does not have all the essential aminoacids needed by human body, including the brain. The body operates by sustaining a hormonal balance and the endocrine system can be considered sort of an operating system of the body. There is simply no chance at upholding optimal endocrine function with vegan diet probiting the organism from acquiring essential nutrients. The single most important nutrient is animal fat. People don't even know what "cholesterol" is but cholesterol is one of the most essential building blocks of the body - it constitutes cell membranes, literally every cell in your body requires it to function. Unsaturated fats, especially polyunsaturated fats (aka industrial seed-derived oils marketed as "plant oils") promote oxidative stress on cellular level, slowing down metaborism, destroying the body's ability to process energy on a most fundamental level, literally aging and slowly killing the organism. Polyunsaturated fats are an element of everyone's diet, but to protect itself from their destructive effects the organism requires a correct ratio of monosaturated fat to polyunsaturated fatty acids.

I tried to just stick to fundamental stuff and I still wrote an essay, I didn't even touch on all the dozens of peculiar microelements that are extremely hard or outright impossible to get in correct doses from an all-plant diet.

This does not concern vegetarians of course, eggs and miIk are an excellent nutrient source. Egg yolk is one the most nutritionally dense food items available, paralleled only by liver.

Back to the topic of Hitler. People adhering to the vegan religion can try to ward off the imminent decay of their bodily functions through a varied diet including a large number of fancy food items imported from around the world accompanied by tons of supplement pills and their still struggle to provide their bodies with what a person who is not mentally ill gets by eating a steak or scrambled eggs. As we all know Hitler wasn't doing a rationalized form of veganism and he sustained on bland microelement free foods like leibniz cookies, noodles and potatoes. His body was obviously a wreck during the 40s, there's no denying it.

You consider the subject of Slavs/Jews to be minor stuff?

Thanks for the recommendation, that is a good point actually.

I feel you're biased, and probably an actual nazi, which is morally reprehensible but I digress.

Hitler was just the right autist in the right spot at the right time. He was probably literally autistic and it showed in everything he did. Jfc he even had his cook make apple strudel and leave it out so he could pretend he was a young boy and sneak into the kitchen to steal it. He was insane. He wasn't poetic or brave or any of that. He was quite literally insane.

That's real?

got myself a book titled The Unknown Warriors by a man called Nicholas Pringle,

WWII Book. They served across the globe; from the North African desert to the jungles of Burma, from the skies of occupied Europe to the icy Arctic Ocean. 'The Unknown Warriors', as Winston Churchill named them, were the men and women who fought for the country during the Second World War. When an appeal for memories of wartime and what they thought of their country in the 21st century appeared in the local newspapers, many put pen to paper or dusted off their old typewriters to send a response. The Unknown Warriors is a collection of letters, packed full of opinions and dramatic war memories from Land Army Girls, Far East POWs, Desert Rats, and RAF aircrew, to name just a few, as well as those who served in essential civilian services and occupations. It is a timeless record of written testimony from men and women from Britain, Australia and New Zealand who served their country with bravery and determination in the 1939-1945 War.

Funny, I never heard of Hitler adopting an explicitly vegan diet.

The most ridiculous thing about Hitler's diet is that he was somehow a fan of margarine. Table Talk literally has a speech by Hitler about how replacing butter with margarine will immensely improve Europe and the entire world. From a nutritional standpoint this is purely idiotic, weird industrial fake food known as "margarine" is one of the most harmful food a person can eat, and butter is beyond doubt one of the best fats - especially if you need to cook or fry something butter is the way to go. It's funny how the people benefiting Hitler the most were probably his simple cooks who were concerned about his health and tried to stealthily smuggle some animal fat such as beef or chicken broth into his meals.

Of course some of the injections Hitler was given by Theo Morell were also animal-based so he would be nowhere near pure veganism even if all his food was vegan. He was being administered steroid-like substances made from animal testicles, which would be nothing bad in itself, and could probably prove to be very helpful, but the problem was the source of these animal organs were slaughterhouses in the occupied ukraine, and later during the war these things were transported via trains in unsanitary conditions.

If you're planning to read Hitler's First Hundred Days by Peter Fritzsche, I would avoid it unless you like social histories. Unfortunately, the writing deteriorates by becoming more stilted around the 40% mark.

In addition, this bizarre passage about the browshirts sticks out.

All over Germany, young people brought the sights and sounds of the Third Reich home with them, singing the newly learned verses of the “Horst Wessel Song,” which had been hastily pasted over other songs in the grade school songbook. One day in May, as Mehs was packing up documents to send to relatives who needed to attest to their “Aryan” identity, his other daughter, Margaret, broke into song. It was the “Horst Wessel Song,” and it had “thoroughly acidified” even the youngest children, Mehs reflected, but he noticed Margaret stumbling over the lyrics. She pronounced “reactionaries” as “treactionaries” when she sang, “Comrades shot by the Red Front and reactionaries.” “What can she know about ‘Red Front’ and ‘reactionaries’?” Mehs asked himself. Later, when his daughters sang, “Clear the streets for the brown battalions, clear the streets for the storm trooper,” while they were getting ready in the morning, Maria asked her father to help her get dressed, singing, “Clear the streets, put on my dress!” When Mehs asked her what she actually meant by all those “brown battalions,” little Marialein replied, “The uncles clearing the streets.” “What uncles?” her father inquired. “The ones who always sweep the streets,” she answered—the municipal street cleaners who wore brown overalls. Margaretchen’s garbled “treactionaries” and Marialein’s ideas about “Uncle Streetsweeper” indicated how confused the Nazi message may have been. What the girls lost in translation stands for a larger problem when Germans observed neighbors becoming Nazis. The more Mehs paid attention to the Nazi phenomenon on the streets, the more puzzled he became. “Treactionaries” poses pressing questions about the depth of ideological identification and the roles that fear, opportunism, and even misunderstanding played in the process of conversion.

For fiction, I enjoyed David Robbins' books War of the Rats and The Last Citadel. War of the Rats is about sniper duels in Stalingrad and The Last Citadel is about the Battle of Kursk. Top-notch stuff.

Hmm, good books about fascism or Nazism? I know of a few titles at least.

The 120 Days of Sodom by Alphonse Donatien De Sade, Vichy French collabateur

Brick by Brick by Robert Chipman, famed American Neo-Fascist and advocate of the eugenics movement

A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lehman E, Snichtecht, Wehrmacht combat veteran who wrote a thirteen-volume memoir of the war in the Eastern Front, from the invasion of Poland in 1939 (The Bad Beginning) to the fall of Berlin in 1945 (The End)

Sailor Moon by Naoko Takeuchi, wife of an Imperial Japanese Navy commandant who died under a full moon at Iwo Jima

The Railway Series by Wilbur Awdry, noted Anglican cleric and Holocaust denialist who infamously claimed that the model of locomotives used to pull the death trains were not "really useful engines" and that using railways to transport prisoners would "cause confusion and delay"

Hop On Pop by "Doktor Seuss", a Medical Officer in the Fallschirmjager 1st Parachute Division who used a pseudonym to write this explicitly pro-Third Reich biography of several Luftwaffe officers ("Pop" being a nickname for Herman Goring)

While not a book, there is an excellent pro-fascist movie called Nazi Supermen Are Our Superiors, directed by famed Nazi sympathizer and cryogenics advocate Walt Disney under the stage name Roger Meyers Sr., the same name he used as an actor in stag films during the silent era

Was Hitler (and I'd prefer responses from people who aren't literal Neo-Nazis) personally cruel?

I ask because I've never heard any act of malice attributed towards him that wasn't a matter of governing. I've only ever heard of the murdering being done by his subordinates, really more like the grunts, and it being done for political and ideological purposes: annihilate the subhumans. Annihilate the opposition.

By contrast, you've got tons of dictators who personally committed murders, rapes, and torture for their own pleasure.

Did Hitler not do that, or have I just not heard of it?

Honestly, I'm not sure.

We do know Hitler was a total sperg and was really weird about a lot of stuff in that autistic OCD sort of way, it's part of why he was a vegetarian and as the war dragged on and he became more paranoid and strung out on drugs, he became erratic and prone to outbursts of rage, especially near the end when he was cooped up in the Fuhrerbunker.

With Hitler, you don't have quite the same amount of horror stories regarding his personal life like you do with most of the other famous 20th Century dictators like Lenin, Stalin, Mao, the Kims, Pol Pot, Saddam, or pretty much any of the African and Yugoslav dictators, but at the same time, you also don't hear those freaky horror stories about Fidel Castro either.

Honestly, I'd say while some of it is due to history being written by the victors, the vast majority of it has to do with both the sheer scale of horrifying cruelty surrounding the Holocaust and the war crimes on the Eastern Front and the overall fucked-up nature of the Nazi high command.

Aside from a few exceptions like Albert Speer and Karl Donitz, most of the dedicated Nazis were batshit insane freaks.

Joseph Goebbels can basically be summed up as "MovieBob if he was actually intelligent", and then there's all the really fucked-up horror stories surrounding Himmler, Bormann, Heydrich, Eichmann, and especially Mengele and Amon Goth.

Really, it was the sheer industrialized brutality of the Holocaust combined with the naked bluntness of why the Nazis were putting undesirables in the camps that made it such a shock to the Western world.

Honestly aside from Streicher, whose every public act and statement screamed "unhinged schizo" and maybe Ribbentrop, whose jawdropping war-losing stupidity can only be satisfactorily explained by some kind of mental ailment, I dont think anyone in the higher echelons of nazi leadership were batshit insane freaks. They were fully rational and intelligent and mostly competent individuals who were more than happy to order, enable, and carry out every crime against humanity imaginable, either out of raw opportunism and personal profit or out of some higher ideal they saw as worth any amount of untermensch blood and tears. Sometimes both as seen in cases like Himmler.

Oh yeah and Streicher and Ribbentrop? The only reason they got anywhere near the inner nazi circle was because Hitler felt like he owed them for pre-power service and using this sense of gratitude they were able to successfully bullshit him into thinking they were assets

As for the whole "fanatical nazi" aspect, frankly I am more and more convinced that outside a handful of sycophants and crazies, the "nazi cult" never really existed as pretty much all of the "nazi" ideals and beliefs and ambitions from the absolute supremacy of germans over other europeans to pan german revanchism to violently acquired lebensraum in the east and subsequent erasure of its people to an obsessive hatred of jews to the whole concept of an eternal fight against "the asiatic hordes pouring from the east" and ofcourse to the utter extermination of "subhuman enemies" were nothing more than a reversion to the politics of Imperial Germany.

The reason I say this is because not only was all this shit loudly advocated by Kaiser Wilhelm and aggressively pushed for by the most powerful men in the german government both before and during WW1 including Chancellor Bethmann Hollweg, Admiral Tirpitz and General Ludendorf the latter of whom would go on to openly support Hitler, but the imperial german government actively carried out serious policies in line with all this shit that were different from those of Hitler only by relative levels of success.

Basically the only thing that changed between the second and third reichs was the aesthetic and the leadership, and these were the only major factors the traditionalists in the WW2 german leadership resented, while they were more than happy and eager to carry out all the shit mentioned above.

TLDR: Nazi Germany was little more than a rebranding of Imperial Germany and all the shit it did was just a logical continuation of Imperial German policy

Fair point, but those policies in and of themselves were crazy even back then and as you said, the Nazis proved just how wack it could get if continued to its logical conclusion.

Even if most of the leaders were relatively sane and functional as individuals, the ideology itself was utterly insane.

Two of his girlfriends killed themselves, one died many years later from complications from her suicide attempt, and a fourth attempted suicide. That many suicide attempts by significant others is not infrequently a sign of someone being abusive.

The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, by William L. Shirer.

It is four parts, with the first focusing on Hitler (which OP seems to want most as a focal point). Second part covers the coming to power and solidifying power, third part deals with the heights of success, and the fourth part is the turnabout and defeat of Germany.

The book is easy enough to follow, and the almost day to day presentation is interesting. Sources are mentioned and cited, if you want to seek out additional information. All around, a worthy read.

Now, the negatives. Anything discovered after the 1970s is not included, obviously, though a reprint in the 1990s has a brief epilogue about the then newly reunited Germany. Also, though I can only recall two or three times, the author does throw in a personal bias. An example being that homosexuality is perverse, when describing a few Nazis. The way it is mentioned refers to homosexuality itself.

If I had to describe it in a single sentence: Baby's First Super Serious Nazi Germany Book.
