I don't think we can predict what the actual released content will be (DLC/Microtransactions are already everywhere btw), but I don't think that Google has what it takes to succeed in this game. They continually try to get into new fields, dip their toes in, and then back out of them or minimize their investment. You can see this with so many of their products and services over the years.

The console game needs a lot of investment, Microsoft had to pay serious bucks to get into the game, so has Sony. Google has the bucks, but not the organizational structure/caliber of management to make that endeavor work.

No matter what Google appears to be doing at first look, their real game is always about creating & selling datasets somehow. They're not just providing search, they're tabulating what people search for & selling that. The next frontier for this is user gameplay data. It's already begun - that's why you sign privacy agreements in half the games you play nowadays. They're collecting data on how you you and a hundred thousand other folks play the game they made.
If Google is getting in on this trend, I bet they've probably got some novel new take on monetizing player data.
Nobody cares about the button presses you produce while gaming or DSP's rants on how bugged the game is.

But take a look at the controller again, see that little microphone button there? That's the button that tells you that they're gonna be listening to everything you or your loved ones say when you're not playing.

A console is not like a PC, it frequently goes at the center of the living room for most families, so we're essentially talking about the exact same play Microsoft tried to make with the Kinect, plus, the gaming industry is pretty flush with cash too, so why not?

That's a thing, I swear. Especially in COD and MOBA shit.
What you said about the mic is really creepy. There's a book by William Gibson that talks about what I think you're getting at. The premise of the story is that if you can collect mass amounts of seemingly innocuous data on a single person, you can map out their purchasing habits and life choices with astonishing accuracy. We see this IRL already - walmart tracks the purchases and behavior patterns of female shoppers and can tell when they're pregnant before they themselves can. They use this for targeted marketing.

You think the mysterious lights are bright now? 'Googleplex' is about right for the number of asses and boobs that get covered up.

I also can't wait for their lineup of console exclusives, always-online and woke as fuck with your profile pic in the upper right corner.

So a console that can only be played via an Internet connection and otherwise has no offline function as games have to be streamed?

No thanks. Isn't this the whole reason that the XBox One flopped at launch? Fuck online dependency, it's just getting worse with every generation. The moment gaming consoles become stream-based is the moment I'm out.

Official prediction. It'll be like if EA built it's own console. No disc drive, so all digital, likely a ,multitude of microtransations based games, and it will have a built in mic, data miner, and shitty customer support.

This console is probably going to be a big part of Project Dragonfly.
Also it will randomly ban users because of faulty coding.

Not a big google fan but if they fund some good exclusives wouldn't be against buying their console.
That sega rumour about google funding new entries for some of the dead series while is most likely bullshit, a new NiGHTs or Virtua Fighter would make seriously want one depending on price and if it has DRM .

If they go through this will fail hard, not because they lack resources but because once you know the people who work behind it (""""respected""""" Google employees) you can tell can only make (and eat) feces.

Wasn't this the exact same thing that the Ouya did? Just an android gaming console? And it failed because Android games aren't fun to play on a console and it had zero exclusives.

Even if this did take off there's no incentive for these companies to make android games exclusive to Google's console they'd just make them available on the store. Which would allow companies like Nvidia to just make clone consoles that have the same exact games on them.

Consdering how Google is too lazy for quality content, Google is telling Ouya to hold its beer while gathering the largest amount of garbage titles on a single game console.

This thing better be less than 100 dollars and cheaper per month than Xbox Gamepass. This is a big public initiative for Google but I don't think they'll have AAA exclusives. And thus I do not think they will succeed.

It sounds awful.

Like an even worse version of the launch XBOX1 with no existing game library and a from a company that doesn't have a first party games studio.

This will suck balls (and not in a good way)

1) Lag - if it relies on streaming graphics from Google's datacenters, latency is gonna be noticeable for most users. Not a problem for turn-based games, but a shit experience for fast action games (i.e. the most popular genres).

2) Google is an evil corporation that wants to spy on your every bowel movement and sell that info to toilet paper companies and German porn sites. It's like the Umbrella Corporation, but with autistic nerds and fat dangerhairs and polyfugly trannies instead of Albert Wesker

3) Google's record of doing anything outside its core business of search (Android was an acquisition) is mostly embarrassing failure. Remember they thought normal people would want to attach video cameras to their faces like a sped version of the Borg collective?

In summary, fuck Google.

i'll be a bit optimistic for the game streaming thing considering when i did project stream, it was, for the most part, pretty good. however, im not gonna buy it. google can steal my data to sell me hot pockets and shit all they want. im not paying money for another console until my ps4 breaks

But what could this incoming announcement be? Well, according to a recent report from The Information, Google has recently stepped up its work on “a subscription-based game streaming service that could work either on Google’s Chromecast or possibly a Google-made console."
As much as I hate the idea, this is probably where the world is headed. But I don't think we're quite there yet. I can't see this working even if you can locally install your Google Play store games. And you probably can't.

A larger thought: Google is really a company adrift at this point. Have they had any successes recently? The only thing I can think of is how they've gone from nowhere to being the dominant player in education from elementary through middle, maybe even high school. Neither Microsoft nor Apple have anything close to Google Classroom at this point, though I guess both are working on it. And neither have anything like cheap Chromebooks school districts can buy on the cheap that also meet the guidelines for use in standardized tests.

But with Google Glass, self-driving cars, cloud compuring, Chromecast, VR headsets, etc., they seem to be also-rans to Amazon, Apple, even Facebook. Maybe firing James Damore and keeping his screechy blue haired obeseatron accusers is not exactly a path to innovation?
