These chaps are rather unpopular and uncommented on, but the 90s has some fantastic borderline tribute bands, not amazing music but so perfectly in a style.

One of the best albums I've randomly stumbled across on Youtube. It really kicks in at the second track and then is pretty much incredible from then to the end. Don't get me wrong the first track is good, but I'm absolutely in love with the rest of the album.

More associated with 'self-aware' industrial/noise labels/venues, Cold Cave is a fine enough (post-punk/darkwave/synthpop/goth/etc/etc) revival group that you can probably see live if you live in the US.

Master Boot Record is good, but I like his project Keygen Church a lot better. It's like if Ghost made the game score for Castlevania.

started with throbbing gristle, ended up at swans. I don't think I've listened to much music that's newer than most of what's in here.

I originally had "Cenotaph" here instead of "Makeshift Swahili", but then thought that might be a little difficult to listen to for people unfamiliar with This Heat. In any case anybody interested in eclectic 70's progressive-proto-post-punk should give this a listen.

I also really like their band "Camberwell Now" that came after, but is still basically the same people, so I'm posting it as a bonus.

I consider this a LARPer band with little lasting value, but I've been going through them recently and for the sake of documentation they do sound the part. Apparently they were formed in the early 80s but I am either suspicious or disappointed with them, as that seems hardly to matter when their release dates categorise them as an early-mid 90s band. I feel bad about admonishing the production as it indicates I'd like them to copy their peers more successfully, but they are rather lacking in the washes of sound that classic goth offers, almost as though the studio they used was more used to generic rock and recorded this like such.

As a bonus, this project seems to be related, although it seems more in a darkwave/metallic-kitsch direction, but I almost like it more because it's so corny. The vocal melody of the second reminds me of an AFI song (for shame - my own, of course, as I think this is older):
