In 2019 it's even weirder. The once widely reviled Hot Topic is getting tons of comments on their Facebook from 30 somethings saying they "sold out" because they don't sell punk, goth and as much band merch as they used to. It's more pop culture and video games now and it tries to appeal to teens. Modern Hot Topic to me looks like a PG-13 Spencer's.

That's not really a new comparison, myself and several other people I knew in school back in the early 00's would say the same thing. And considering that they carried copies of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac back then they really weren't that PG-13, just more subtle about their R-rated merch than Spencer's.

I'm sure physical bullying and abuse similar to hazing did occur like she talks about but most goth kids were just laughed at. I'd like to believe goth is actually a period in time and the teens who grew up herein. It all fits. No new goths emerge and the idea of being a quiet outcast who whines about feelings hasn't really shown itself much since. The internet was majorly for talking and expressing yourself back then. I knew the last generation of goths in my high school, and they all either grew into a mature take on goth style or became respectable and colorful. The reason we don't see goths on the streets is because they failed to grow up and become part of society, so they sit at home on NEET bucks.

I haven't had too many run ins with goth kids, there was like one that I remember and even then she only stayed at school for about a year.
They also don't rule over Hot Topic anymore, as that one is more of a weeb/90s kid shop than a goth shop. I even bought a MHA shirt from there, it's a pretty good shirt and I haven't had rotten fruit thrown at me for wearing it.

Just find an Industrial night at your local club, all the goths are there, they're all nerds too unsurprisingly. Mostly its that adults with jobs don't dress up if they're not going out.

There's still plenty of goths about, at least where I live, but for the most part they're attached to the Black Metal scene, and they tend to go for a more Norse or Celtic aesthetic rather than the Victorian thing, which does seem to have died out somewhat.
I thought that Emos were extinct, but amazingly there are still a few out there, and I found an astonishing throwback from the most unlikely of sources - the Youtuber Justin Whang, who I'm sure a lot of Kiwis are fond of, given that he's into documenting old internet drama. Now I knew he was in a band, but I did not know until he shared this link about a week ago that his band were the product of some kind of unholy union of Limp Bizkit, BrokenCyde and Attack Attack:
