I don't really think people are unjustified in complaining about graphics cards' price increasing three-fold. I'm pretty sure that it'd annoy me too if I was looking to upgrade my PC at the moment. It probably will if this is still going on by like next year or so.

Yeah, same. I was thinking of upgrading to a 1070 or a 1080 myself at one point, but I don't have a 4K monitor or anything so I'm fine.

Overdue and an obvious move. GPUs are no longer gaming-specific with CUDA taking dominance in the HPC marketing. I'm sure there is a bunch of small manufacturing optimizations they can make for people who don't need actual video output, and just need the CUDA cores. I thought that's what the Tesla line was all about and I'm not entirely sure how this is different.

PS. it should be noted that Tesla's are not actually cost efficient for mining, they simply cost too much.

Probably a cheaper version of the tesla most likely, as in the same concept: A GPU without video.

I've been due for a CPU/GPU upgrade for a while now, but the Meltdown patch for windows has destroyed my ability to game (I've got a last gen haswell). I've got to upgrade, but it'll probably just have to be CPU until these prices come down.
Fucking sucks, but what can we do?

It was the newest of the older processors they said would be affected and oof it's rough.

I total warhammer 2 I took a 20 fps hit, and my load times have gotten to the point where I can get up and get a glass of water before it's done.
Nier Automata dropped 10-15 fps, Doom lost 10 or so.
I haven't played anything else that's very demanding since the patch. But yeah it definitely sucks.

I had no idea it could be this rough though...
I suggest you to go with ryzen, when you upgrade.
There are probably gonna be a lot of deals on the old series, when the new one comes out.

I got out like a bandit a little over a year again with a $250 R9 Fury. It's selling for $400 used right now and I wish I could sell it but then I'd have nothing worthwhile until the prices go down.

I don't even know why miners would be using this card. It gets less performance mining than a GTX 1070 and uses double the power. It's a 300 watt card and it gets stupidly hot running solo in my computer. You'd need to be an idiot to use it for mining, yet people are buying them if the ebay bids are anything to go buy.

AMD cards typically have better compute performance than Nvidia's stuff, which attracts miners because they're after that, at least AFAIK..

Every profitability calculator I've checked has said otherwise. Once upon a time when only haxxorz knew what BTC was, AMD cards were the best for mining crpytos, and they arguably are again with the RX cards, but it hasn't always been that way. 2014-2015 was a weird time for mining. Both the AMD R9 series and Nvidia 900 series were (and still are) terrible for mining compared to previous trends. The Fury is better at mining than the GTX 980 despite being comparable cards, but that doesn't mean a whole lot- the 980 just sucks ass at at mining. There's no reason to be using any of those cards in a mining rig short of having free electricity to power it.

R9 furys usually downvolt really well.
At least the one I had, but I've seen a lot of other samples do the same. You probably have a sapphire nitro, which is the same I had in 2016.
People buy it, because of that and maybe they dont even pay their own electricity, so it is a win win.

Most mining equipment is like this unless you have some specific scale of economy working (like a bunch of stolen electricity from some bribed Chinese power company) or otherwise really know what you're doing. Cheap electricity is always a big one.

When anyone tries to sell you a money printing, you should immediately doubt their motives. Why are they doing that if they could make more just printing money themselves? Generally they can't and they're overcharging you.

People have been going pretty hard on altcoin GPU mining for at least 2-3 years. Does it really take more than 6 months to expand an existing production line? Are they really at 24/7 capacity?
